Rush Limbaugh selection in children’s book competition causes a stir

(CNN) - Rush Limbaugh - radio host, conservative firebrand and... children's book author of the year?

The Children’s Book Council and its Every Child a Reader program released on Thursday their author-of-the-year finalists for their annual Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards.

Limbaugh is one of the four finalists, and his nomination has prompted outrage on social media, given the host’s often-incendiary nature.

Limbaugh's book is titled, "Rush Revere and The Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans" – a time-traveling tale of colonial America and the latest of two books in the "Rush Revere Series" published last year by Simon & Schuster.

Limbaugh, an outspoken figure in the political world, often expresses controversial sentiments on his radio program. Recently, Limbaugh blasted Pope Francis' economic views as "pure Marxism," and, in 2012, he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" for her support of women's access to birth control.

The Children’s Book Council issued a public letter, posted to its website and Facebook page, defending its finalist selection process following the uproar online and insisting that the author of the year finalists "are determined solely based on titles’ performances on the bestseller lists."

"Some of you have voiced concerns over the selection of finalists from bestseller lists, which you feel are potentially-manipulable indications of the success of a title. We can take this into consideration going forward, but cannot change our procedure for selecting finalists after the fact," the organization said in the letter.

The CBC letter goes on to say the kids, who will start voting next week, ultimately decide which author wins in each of the six categories, including best author. The letter goes on to assure that the organization has a procedure in place to protect against fraud and adult's voting in the contest.

"This program has never been about CBC or ECAR endorsing finalists," the letter says.

Limbaugh touted the apparent success of his book series on his radio program on Thursday.

"We just found out last night that on the New York Times Best-Seller List of March the 30th, ‘Rush Revere and the First Patriots’ will open at number one, and ‘Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims’ moves up to number four," said, according to a transcript of the audio.

Limbaugh’s book landed at the number-5 spot on the New York Times best seller’s list for the week of March 23.

CNN's Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

Yet I am betting that George Bernard Shaw, who openly espoused mass extermination via Socialism, gets a pass by many of those who write here....

That's only one half of the truth, which totally distorts the facts. The facts are that Georgetown had been covering prescription birth control for years, for decades. Suddenly, with the passage of the ACA, Georgetown decided that they would no longer cover prescription birth control, arguing that they ACA shouldn't force them to cover it, despite the fact that they had done so for years. Brith control prescriptions can be written for a variety of reasons, none of which have anything to do with intercourse.

And that is also a half truth. Georgetown had, and stated they would continue to, cover birth control prescriptions for medical purposes. Good grief.
    ============================================================
Uh, Dave. Read my post again. What's the difference between my "prescription birth control" and your "birth control prescriptions"? You're wrong, Dave. Georgetown refused to cover birth control drugs at all, not even prescriptions.

My 9 year old is in the process of reading the first book and loves it. After each chapter she gets daddy's undivided attention as she tells me what she just read, quizes me to make sure i was paying attention and asks some surprisingly pointed questions. I love it.

I read this book to my 6 year old Grandson and he LOVED it...SO DID I. Rush Limbaugh is a Great American and a real hero. If you haven't read the book, how would you know? Oh that's right...the un-educated voter. The ones who voted for the moron, liar, Muslin that's in office now. They wouldn't know the truth if it bit them. Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims is an authentic history book, based on FACTS. The facts that Common Core curriculum tries to hide. Wake up America!

Since when does access equate to "free". In many articles I see the word access used and individuals touting, denying access to something. Access and Free are two different things.

He must've had another a close encounter with an oxycontin bottle when he wrote that stuff. BTW, political scholars do not usually write children's books, at least not until after they write their scholarly books. Personally, I think The Grand LImbaugh wrote books commensurate with his skills set.

My sister is a HOOT! She's a school teacher and closes her mind to any thought or book that the Liberal, State-ist, Teachers Union for rewriting history, tells her to burn. You should :"know thine enemies" ... read his "lies". Why we all know that the Mayflower was sent to America to spread small pox to the native peoples and so conservatives could use the local water supply,... brook ... as a latrine ... These revisionist moonbats think the early settlers understood viruses and hygiene ... They knew how to isolate viruses, preserve them and then spread them to the folks who saved their communal asses by teaching them it was ok to take off their long underwear in summer weather and fertilize their new found sustenance "maze" with a fish in each plant hole. SO.... Rush's book actually used Gov. William Bradford's diary of the real facts and events .... no wonder the elitist democrat, liberal, moonbats want it destroyed. WAKE UP AMERICA!!! READ THE BOOK!!! Then condemn the lies you must find or you will have to WAKE UP!!!

To all adults who are blowing-up over Rush Limbaughs nomination... Take a step back and let the children decide without reservations or inhibitions who the winner. Some people oppose true freedom and are crying about letting freedom ring, but the lessons learned will keep these children free.

Since this is a CNN article, and Rush is a conservative, Ms. Davidsen is required to report a negative light on Rush- no matter what his accomplishments are.

I bought Rush's first kid's book for my nieces and had to read it first – I loved it! I learned things about history that I should have known (embarrassing!) Keep writing Rush! How can it possibly be non-hypocritical to LOVE kid's books by serial killers locked up in prison and drug dealing starlets but a "bad influence" for Rush to write kids' books? Sounds to me like some folks have it out for Rush no matter what. Heaven forbid if a non-liberal won a kid's book contest!! Is this about good kid's books or a very liberal socialist agenda?

Interesting, people who never have listened to him want him in jail. but the people who are in jail they want out. I guess tolerance is in the eye of the beholder. Let it be intolerance in the name of tolerance. Free speech for thee but not for me.

Wow! The hatred and vitriol towards Rush on here is absolutely unbelievable! Folks – advocating such hatred is what causes racism, bigotry and lack of tolerance. This is an excellent children's book – geared towards the middle school age group. If you don't want to support anything Rush does then don't buy it - do you seriously have to lower yourself to Hitler's level and advocate murder, book banning, vomiting etc... simply because you don't agree with somebody that has never advocated anything as bad as the wall street poopers did? What a shameful example to children many of these comments are.

He must have sent them over here since they have nothing better to do than sit in a dark, damp basement inside their teaklan bubble.
Another reason 2014 and 2016 are important to vote to take the teaklans out once and for all.

God Bless you Rush – the liberals will try their hardest to bring you down, but they will fail. Even if you don't win this award, America will always know that you are a good, moral man, worthy of writing books for our children – as opposed to the consummate, continuous, and inveterate lies published in the school books of our public schools.

The fact that parents actually consider someone like Rush as someone their kids should emulate is pretty sad. If Rush wants to retire as a children's book author, thats fine, but before then he'll have to do a crap tone of apologizing for all the disgusting stuff he's said over the air.

Here's the post that you thusly responded to:
"I will not buy anything that Rush Limbaugh puts his name to, but that's my prerogative as a consumer.
Additionally it is hard for me to fathom Rush writing anything that I'd want children to read but he has, and lo and behold it has sold well.
He met the current criteria to be a finalist supposedly fair and square so let's just shut up about it."

Curb your haste to hate. I gave the man his due, and I even went as far as saying that we should all shut up about it....why don't you get the ball rolling with that and zip it?
