Rush Limbaugh selection in children’s book competition causes a stir

(CNN) - Rush Limbaugh - radio host, conservative firebrand and... children's book author of the year?

The Children’s Book Council and its Every Child a Reader program released on Thursday their author-of-the-year finalists for their annual Children’s and Teen Choice Book Awards.

Limbaugh is one of the four finalists, and his nomination has prompted outrage on social media, given the host’s often-incendiary nature.

Limbaugh's book is titled, "Rush Revere and The Brave Pilgrims: Time-Travel Adventures with Exceptional Americans" – a time-traveling tale of colonial America and the latest of two books in the "Rush Revere Series" published last year by Simon & Schuster.

Limbaugh, an outspoken figure in the political world, often expresses controversial sentiments on his radio program. Recently, Limbaugh blasted Pope Francis' economic views as "pure Marxism," and, in 2012, he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and "prostitute" for her support of women's access to birth control.

The Children’s Book Council issued a public letter, posted to its website and Facebook page, defending its finalist selection process following the uproar online and insisting that the author of the year finalists "are determined solely based on titles’ performances on the bestseller lists."

"Some of you have voiced concerns over the selection of finalists from bestseller lists, which you feel are potentially-manipulable indications of the success of a title. We can take this into consideration going forward, but cannot change our procedure for selecting finalists after the fact," the organization said in the letter.

The CBC letter goes on to say the kids, who will start voting next week, ultimately decide which author wins in each of the six categories, including best author. The letter goes on to assure that the organization has a procedure in place to protect against fraud and adult's voting in the contest.

"This program has never been about CBC or ECAR endorsing finalists," the letter says.

Limbaugh touted the apparent success of his book series on his radio program on Thursday.

"We just found out last night that on the New York Times Best-Seller List of March the 30th, ‘Rush Revere and the First Patriots’ will open at number one, and ‘Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims’ moves up to number four," said, according to a transcript of the audio.

Limbaugh’s book landed at the number-5 spot on the New York Times best seller’s list for the week of March 23.

CNN's Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.

I love the word-play. Rush didn't oppose Sandra Fluke advocacy of women's 'ACCESS' to birth control. He opposed her advocacy for forced taxpayer provision of birth control. Just gently twist the truth to sway the uninformed to your opinion CNN. Nice job.

So a sitting president whose every move is political and unpopular when polled is not considered "controversial", "incendiary", or a "firebrand". But someone who voices a conservative opinion based on common sense, wanting the best for everyone in this country, individual liberty, and good old Americana is all the aforementioned.

How about you judge the book on it's merits for what it is. Let me know if you find anything objectionable or wrong. You won't. Know back to the leader of the free world. Look at his books. Filled with lies (NY girlfriend wasn't real but a "composite" of people in his past), obscenities (cursing laced throughout; I don't care about the context), and illegal behavior (drugs). That's our president. That's a person in charge with power to execute and enforce laws. Rush is what? Someone with a microphone who people can turn off.

What is wrong with all the objections to a wholesome and historically accurate book that seeks to inspire kids to learn and read more. What is wrong with this reporter, this country, and the liberals that plague us like a cancer?

THIS is CNN. What a joke.
Kids love the books. That's pretty much all you need to know about a children's book. The message is wholesome and kids enjoy it.

    DJ...Added to your astute observation:
You HATE the left (need a stronger word), you think liberalism is a diseae (you can’t spell but it’s a mental disease, the worst kind), you HATE the school system (yes, you’re a good example...an idiot), you hate the media (yes, all mentally deranged liberals).
You stumbled on the truth DJ

To make the bestseller list when some bookstores hid his books, turned them so that the back of the book was facing front, refusing to put up promotional material, is amazing.

What about insurance companies forcing me to pay for viagra and the like? Where's the outrage on the right about forcing folks to pay for penis pumps, another thing many insurance plans cover?

If President Obama is so unpopular, then why did a majority of Americans elect him TWICE?

You and others of your ilk, Flo, are the cancer – the whiny, childish, mean-spirited hateful cancer afflicting us.

Rush's book, The Brave Pilgrims is a wonderful children's book. It tells the story of the pilgrims and when and why they came. The trials and tribulations they went through just to set this colony up. Rush and his is smart aleck talking horse, Lliberty take two children in a time machine back to that place. The accounts of the Pilgrims are accurate and true and taken from their own accounts. It's a great idea because children are not being taught true American history in schools and the exceptionalism of this great country.

We should organize locally to pull these books from their shelves (by force if necessary) and then publicly burn them in the street. That will stand as a little lesson to any school, teacher or school administrator that allows this Nazi propaganda in their door.

No, Rush promoted his book on air, and told people to go out buy it because they'll love it. Quick. What's the difference between Rush's history books and actual history books? A bibliography, that's what.

I've noticed that your American Left is highly resistant to "diversity of thought" but is most welcoming to "perversity of thought."

What's all the whining about ? There isn't room for historical perspectives that differ from your Uni Grievance Studies programs ? Perspectives that are more in line with your true American heritage...

Congratulations Rush on your fine accomplishment. The left can make ugly comments about the time in your live when you became hooked on prescription drugs while I haven't heard any of them criticize Whitney Houston, or Obama for the same problem that they had faced with respect to drugs. The mind of a leftist is full of mush.

Just got the second book for my kid ! She took it to school today and even the teacher in our liberal school was very much interested in the book. I have been struggling to teach American History to my kid and I am very thankful for this book. Liberty is the reason, kids love this book ! That was the market genius of Rush !

No one is being forced by the government to get insurance plans that cover viagra or penis pumps you moron. We object to the GOVERNMENT telling us what we have to have for insurance. Private companies were allowed to offer whatever coverages the public was willing to pay for prior to the Medical Insurance Regulation Act (it's definitely not an affordable health care act since it has done very little to make medical insurance more affordable for most people). And the public was able to decide what coverages they wanted before also. I had a high deductible plan that was very affordable, but can no longer be offered.

Their is no outcry over insurance companies offering policies that cover birth control. The outrage is over our choices being removed by the Democrats. Notice I didn't say Congress, because the majority of Republicans could see the lies being told and voted against it.

Rush confounds the liberals yet again!
Worth pointing out that it was not the ACCESS to birth control for Sandra Fluke to which he objected....it was a matter of who was going to PAY for it...and since condoms are inexpensive and it was shown that birth control pills were available at the Georgetown Target a few blocks from Ms. Fluke's campus for $4 a month, Rush argued that the cost of her birth control should not be borne by the public.

@ "Ms. Freedom"????. Unless you are engaging in pure sarcasm here, your name should be "Ms. Tyranny". I can't stand your liberal ideology either, but I believe in your right to sell it to the masses if they will buy it. Why don't you take off your pointy little hat for a second to restore the blood flow to your brain, and actually read a few pages of Rush's book? I doubt you will find anything that offends your delicate sensibilities.
