U.S. highlights progress on nuclear security

The Hague, Netherlands (CNN) – Hours before the launch of the third Nuclear Security Summit set to begin Monday in The Hague, the White House announced an agreement with the government of Japan to assist in the disposal of hundreds of kilograms of nuclear material currently stored within its borders.

The material in question consists of both highly enriched uranium and separated plutonium created for an academic research project launched by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency in the 1960's. Technological advances have since rendered the material unnecessary for the project's purpose of studying fast reactor cores, and the two countries have pledged to work together on its removal and disposal.

The White House also announced the completion of nuclear disposal projects undertaken in partnership with Italy and Belgium that were agreed to at the 2012 summit in Seoul. In joint statements released Monday morning, the nations announced that approximately 20 kilograms of nuclear material had been removed from Italy, and a "significant amount" of material had been removed from Belgium.

Another joint statement released by the leaders of Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, Georgia, Hungary, Mexico, South Korea, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam highlighted the elimination of highly enriched uranium in those countries.

The statement expressed "appreciation" to Russia, the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency for "their assistance in converting research reactors from HEU fuel to LEU fuel and in related HEU removal efforts." The nuclear material removed from these countries will initially be secured and ultimately disposed or "downblended" to low enriched uranium – or LEU.

President Barack Obama first talked about the need for enhanced security of civilian nuclear material in a 2009 speech delivered on a visit to Prague. Subsequently the U.S. hosted the first Nuclear Security Summit in 2010 with the goal of reducing the threat of nuclear terrorism by increasing the security and reducing the supplies of international civilian nuclear supplies.

In a fact sheet distributed ahead of Monday's summit, the White House pointed to many successes achieved since 2009. By the U.S. government's count, 12 nations have eliminated their supplies of HEU or separated plutonium, 27 countries have removed or disposed of nearly 3,000 kilograms of nuclear material and 24 reactors have either been downgraded from highly enriched uranium to low enriched uranium or shut down entirely.

Additionally, the White House points to the United States' role in helping to secure 218 buildings in 5 countries that store "weapons-usable nuclear materials."

Would I be correct in assuming that this "downblending" takes place within U.S. borders? Yucca Mountain, perhaps?

rla – A person can only undo so much Bush damage at once. (N. Korea, Georgia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and more). Slowly, without republican help, positive things are getting done.

To say someone votes with the president 99% of the time is a lie, but that is to be expected from the party of no accomplishments. The president is not a senator. Oh I forgot, the people they are trying to attract are brain dead.

Good call. Allow me to finish connecting the dots. "The president is not a Senator" means that Pres. Obama does not vote in the Senate. So when conservatives say "such-and-such" votes with the president, then they're being dishonest with you.
    ---
Then the Dems were dishonest when they said "So-and-so voted with Bush". Which they did. Incessantly.

That's odd – I just googled "dems said republican candidates 'voted with bush'", and not a SINGLE article came up. There were, however, many articles from the present day pertaining to the right whining that "the dems vote with President Obama 99% of the time". Perhaps you could provide a CREDIBLE link to your claim?

As usual, our president is taking an even handed success-based approach. Accounting for those small terrorist-ready caches of nuclear material is critical to world security but gets no fanfare. A concept like this is way too complex for the average Hannity viewer that is easily fooled Hannity fake ACA witnesses. All that type of viewer has the attention span for is "Hannity says a guy says Obama bad so um, Obama bad".

"Really?" The Obama ad asks before showing a video snippet of McCain telling Fox News in 2003 that he had voted with Bush 90% of the time. "

That link from Fair is Fair is an ad using a direct quote from McCain stating what McCain admitted was his own voting record.

The fun thing about our friends on the Right is they really have deified the President. I mean how else can we explain their expectation that single-handedly this President with absolutely no assistance from the GOP in Congress could somehow de-nuclearize the world's hot spots (or fix their recession, or the world's pollution, or every dictator, or, etc...)
Sure, and by not being able to accomplish all that in 15 minutes they have grounds to criticize his very existence-and in fact do so.
And all this after the disaster that was the second Bush's administration. Really, who'd think the GOP had such a sense of humor?

rla....Before you criticize the POTUS, you might want to go to school yourself. First of all sentences start with a capital letter and end with either a period, question mark or an exclamation point. I get so frustrated attempting to read sentences that look like they were written by 5 year olds bashing the POTUS.

We need to make fission reactors that can burn both the usual fuels (uranium & plutonium) and the strange trans-uranium materials that come about after spent fuel has been reprocessed. These reactors need to have more security to keep nut jobs (terrorists and anti-nuclear activists) out as well as greater structural improvements to make sure that the building can withstand mulitple simultaneous disasters. We will need these because fossil fuels are limited and pollute the planet. I would like to have fusion reactors that work (produce more energy than they need to sustain the reaction) which would change everything to running on electricity reducing the need for fossil fuels.

    _____________

Even that's gotten hard to do. Look, in the past weeks certain realities have come to light.
First, we know Issa cooked the books on the IRS "scandal" by taking testimony out of context, lying about testimony and generally demonstrating that there is NO IRS controversy. He even had to break House rules to silence his committee's second in command.
Second, the Benghazi rap,-once again, the GOP has gotten so entangled in its own lies that they are down to the definition of "is" sort of argument. No controversy beyond the GOP's own disability to create a coherent argument about why 4 Americans who died in Libya are somehow worse than the 61 who died on Mr. Bush's watch.
Third, the ACA /Obamacare controversy. Well, our friends on the Right haven't been able to prove that "millions" lost their health insurance, or that health insurance is anymore expensive this year in rate of growth than in any other year in the last 20, nor have they lived down the lies of their patrons the Kochs (whose poor, poor advertising subject actually got a $1,200 break on her health insurance thanks to the ACA). With every day, every enrollee, the GOP lies on this one die hard. AND they still have no alternative- just 54 "symbolic" votes (symbolizing what we don't quite know...)
Fourth, the whole Muslim/communist/socialist nonsense- well, the GOP could bring back the Birthers, but I think that might dent their plans to reach out to minorities (and anyone not yelling "hey you kids, get off my lawn").

Tampa ntim- Bush has not been in charge for the past 5 years and In my opinion Bush WAS rthe strt of the situation we are in today but we than elected a MORo- president community organizer wha has made every situation worse. Plus we are a weaker nation. Deterrance is hard to build and easy to lose and the progressives and their singular world view have accelerated our weakening and loss of world respect to the point where we are in danger of another cold war and sinince I lived through the last one I do not wish another on anyone! BUT BUSH after 5 years– get over it!
