Harry Reid push called 'un-American' in new ad

Washington (CNN) - American Encore, a new conservative group created by outside money specialist Sean Noble, is airing a television ad in Nevada attacking Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for proposing IRS regulations that would rein in outside political groups.

The minute-long spot features a clip of Reid on the Senate floor blasting the billionaire business titans Charles and David Koch, who have steered hundreds of millions of dollars to conservative causes in recent election cycles without disclosing their donors, "as un-American as anyone that I can imagine."

"Sen. Reid, attempting to kill free speech because you disagree with what's said, that's unfair and that un-American," the ad's narrator says. "Tell Harry Reid, stop attacking free speech."

American Encore is spending $30,000 to air the commercial for a week on Las Vegas cable, beginning Monday. It's accompanied by a digital ad buy.

The group, a 501(c)4 organization that launched earlier this month, plans to spend $10 million this midterm cycle against Democrats who have been critical of outside campaign spending.

Noble, the organization's founder, formerly headed the Center to Protect Patient Rights, a Koch-affiliated group that funneled almost $200 million in undisclosed contributions to conservative entities like Americans for Prosperity and the National Rifle Association between 2009 and 2012, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

American Encore has already aired a TV ad in Minnesota that attacked Democratic Sen. Al Franken, who is up for re-election this year. Reid is not on the ballot again until 2016.

UPDATE: The Nevada Democratic party condemned the ad in a statement Monday.

"Nothing says 'free speech' like shadowy billionaires spending unlimited amounts of money on a massive campaign of deception to buy an election," said party spokesman Zach Hudson.

"The Koch brothers' extreme agenda of privatizing Social Security and ending Medicare as we know it to pay for tax breaks for corporations that ship American jobs overseas is out-of-touch with Nevada. Fortunately, Nevadans have Harry Reid fighting for a strong middle class and a growing economy."

LOL they are criticizing Reid in the same manor in which he criticized the Koch brothers. If he is being un-American then they are being just as un-American.

In other words, folks, peddling lies and slander to the public in order to influence elections is a form of free speech.

Support an amendment to the Constitution to reverse Citizen's United and outlaw "issue" ads that are so transparent one woul;d have to be gullible beyond belief to think they're not partisan hatchet jobs. Limit political contributions to individual human beings at $1000 per election cycle.

Personally I think it's UnAmerican to go on national television and say the nastiest things possible about the sitting POTUS. Yet do absolutely nothing to help fix things. I thought we elected a President not a King. I wasn't aware he was supposed to do everything alone while the opposing party votes 50 times to deny health coverage to millions and tries to overturn a 40 year old law...

    Hell, maybe I'm wrong.....

If its a step towards taking mass money out of the political process, Id have to side with even Reid on this one. Corporations are NOT people, that is just ridiculous

You're not wrong Wake. One thing we Americans had always been proud of was that our votes can't be bought. That may not be the case anymore. So sad. No respect for anything anymore.

Do you know what the difference between the Koch brothers and Harry Reid? The Koch brothers are "job creators", and Harry Reid is a "government dependency creator".

So I just saw a lying Koch ad on TV this morning. It's for Terri Land who is running against Gary Peters here in Mi. This 30 something white female sits there lying about how hard they worked to be middle class bit now thanks to Obamacare they are losing everything. It reeked of lies. Considering most whites in Mi are doing well and already had good insurance through their employers I don't believe a word of it. The Kochs own the Republican Party and they own Mi. Even up to dumping their waste on the banks of the Detroit River and then fighting the citizens that want it removed.

I agree. But, corporations were established "as people" decades ago, in the late 1970s. My biggest concern right now is how soon will these "corpoprate people" start demanding the right to vote. I have little doubt what the Republican position on such an issue would be.

Please keep promoting this ideology, the vast majority of people do not equate free speech to limitless money, only the rich do. Most sane americans think that is a lame excuse for trying to corrupt our system. Ted Cruz made me laugh out loud, he adamantly said the biggest myth of the gop is their the party for big money, at what point do you not ask yourselves how unbelievably stupid do they think you are.

Dark money corrupts politics by buying access and influence. The obscene amounts of money from anonymous donors is currently the greatest threat to our democracy. The Åmerican Encore ad is not true about restricting free speech. It is a cynical attempt to mislead the public and hide the names of its donors.

The communists are working overtime to dominate both the Democrat and Republican parties. Kinda looks like some of you need to WAKE UP as you say. As long as you sit back, and allow this administration, to take more rights away from you, than they have in the last 50 years, you need to live in China or Russia, because you refuse to work and help America be a good place to be for everyone. Bring it on!

Lizzie, a level playing field is the last thing the Republicans want, do you honestly think that limiting your contribution is stifling free speech, of course it doesn't, they themselves could buy airtime and run their own commercials, and say as a business owner I feel this way, don't you tire of the lame excuses for their actions, I simply could not vote for a party who spends so much effort lying to you, while refusing to do their jobs, speaking if which, where are they, the gop promised jobs, not even a single proposal from them, wondering what you think they have to offer a working class family.

Both parties are guilty of this. Harry spews about the Koch brothers as he take in huge sums from the unions. People need to wake up and see how they are being taken by both sides. Fueling the feud does nothing to solve the problems we have in this country. The press just keeps piling it on. Time to wake up people.

I am yet to see anyone that identifies themselves tea party, even come close to supporting a democratic idea. Tea Party is just a Republican by another name. ....snake oil salesman comes to mind.

I see. So, selling America to the highest bidder is patriotic, but talking about the GOP and their unhealthy relationship to the richest polluters in America and their highly anti-democratic values isn't.

Yup, that sounds like todays' GOP.

Political activity of any kind should NEVER be tax deductible. That has been the real scandal all along. The IRS has been using the wrong interpretation of the law in its regulations since 1957. The IRS should follow the law which allows NO DEDUCTION for political activity by social welfare groups. Politicians have been scamming with illegal tax deductions the U.S. public since 1957. That is the scandal Issa.
