House panel to consider holding ex-IRS official in contempt

(CNN) - The House Oversight Committee plans to vote next Thursday on whether to hold a former Internal Revenue Service official in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify about the agency's alleged targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, its chairman, U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, said.

The official is Lois Lerner, the former IRS director of tax-exempt organizations, Lerner retired last year after being placed on administrative leave by the IRS after she said the IRS applied extra scrutiny to both conservative and liberal political groups seeking tax-exempt status between 2010 and 2012.

Hold her in contempt AND hold the IRS commissioner in contempt for refusing to turn over her emails after over a year of waiting. Throw them both in JAIL. They were supposed to be working for the taxpayers but instead are stonewalling for the Democrats because the IRS was being used to target Obama's political opponents.

There were also numerous reports of other federal agencies (ATF, OSHA, EPA, etc.) being used in this way as well. This was a large and coordinated targeting effort to suppress political activity, suppress the vote and affect national elections.

Issa wants to hold her in contempt? So does this mean this witch hunt will be over? What else would Issa spend 14 million dollars of the tax payer money on.

salty dog – You are right. Issa did not want her to testify because it would openly destroy his witch hunt.

The President SHOULD be able to use the IRS as he sees fit! If a "political group" opposes his will, he needs to use all his resources to squash them.

Wow. So now Issa has the granted himself the power to take away someone's constitutional rights. Everyone has the right to plea the 5th Amendment. You have a right to pick and choose what you want to answer. Look at FL Gov. Rick Smith's example. He plead the 5th dozens of times in one case against him. IOKIYAR

House GOP/Teatrolls looking for something to distract from Obamacare hitting its target numbers despite the website being down for 1/3 of the enrollment period.

Right, which is why she sat there and took the 5th AGAIN when asked several questions. Geez, can't you guys make up any better lies than this?! I mean it was televised so everybody knows you are lying.

"They were supposed to be working for the taxpayers but instead are stonewalling for the Democrats because the IRS was being used to target Obama's political opponents."

Yeah, Lois Lerner, a registered Republican, is "stonewalling for the Democrats." She's quite obviously just protecting herself with the 5th because, as everyone knows, no matter what she testified to, the GOP/Teatrolls would have to, HAVE TO, pretend it called for her to be prosecuted in order for them to continue this charade.

"Right, which is why she sat there and took the 5th AGAIN when asked several questions. Geez, can't you guys make up any better lies than this?! I mean it was televised so everybody knows you are lying."

And then followed up by cutting the hearing short the second Cummings started talking about immunity. Fact: leaving Lois Lerner claiming the 5th and holding her in contempt allows Issa and the GOP/Teatrolls to say "the accusations stand and have not been disproven" but letting her testify with immunity won't do that. They don't WANT to "get to the bottom of it." What they WANT is to perpetuate their accusations and conspiracy theories and use them to rile up GOP/Teatroll voters for 2014.

They're talking about the hearing where Issa turned off the microphones of Democrats so that they could not ask Lerner any questions. Those are the answers that Issa did not want to aired in public. Meanwhile, Issa seems to have granted himself dictatorial powers that enable him to personally decide when someone is, or isn't, protected under the U.S. Constitution.

Can anyone imagine what these people would do if they were actually in power? I don't think you can, or even if you should try.

"Right, which is why she sat there and took the 5th AGAIN when asked several questions"

Which is her Constitutional right. Moreover, afterthat happened, Rep. Cummings started trying to talk about giving her immunity and Issa cut the hearing short.

Fact: Issa and the GOP/Teatrolls don't want to give her immunity so they can "get to the bottom of this." Beating her up for claiming the 5th but getting no answers from her allows them to claim that their accusations still stand and have not been disproven (i.e., guilty until proven innocent, which is the way they've run the hearings on this and other things from the get-go). If she testifies with immunity and doesn't give them what they want to hear...which they know she won't at this point in light of the rest of the evidence...then their entire nontroversy dies and horrible, embarrassing death for them.

I admittedly have difficulties watching this stuff, it makes you sick when you know their real goals, I have many things to attend to. I do not agree with all Democrats ideas, but are all to aware of the gop plan, funneling more to the top1%,and hope it trickles down is insane, and the only plan they have, no thanks, if the Koch brothers can afford to spend hundreds of millions on attack ads, that they know are lies, they can suck it up and pay some taxes for crying out loud!

Tommy G – On my TV, Rep. Cummings was about to ask her a question, and Issa shut off the mic. Quite a tribute to right wingers who cannot handle the truth. In your defense, by watching Fox, you would not have known what was going on.

Did Sniffit clear this up for you son? Or should we go over it again? They don't want her to testify, and the sad truth is she knows her party well enough to know, they will sacrifice her, therefore she needs protecting from her own party, anythjng for the greater goal of promoting lies .

Without taking things out of context, you don't have much of an argument Tommy, sorry you can't see that, which speaks volumes on its own. Issa was not about yi let the truth come out. Is it coincidence that he won't allow testimony that contradicts his narrative, regardless of what the investigation is, how does that practice produce the truth?

  21. God MAY NOT be a Liberal, but He IS a Democrat

The House GOP had better be careful. There are more people who see thru this than they understand. The IRS people did NOTHING Unequal. They treated Progressive and Conservative groups the same. The only thing the IRS didn`t do is apply the LETTER OF ThE LAW as severely as it should have. No favorable tax status should have been granted to these organization us they were EXCLUSIVELY dedicated to social welfare causes. The actual application of the law will hurt the Republican Party more than the Democrats.

Has anyone on the right figured out what the law means by stating those exempt organizations must be engaged exclusively in social welfare? That might be a stretch for those with tea party, conservative, or progressive in their name.

There are many reasons why someone takes the 5th.
No testimony means no information from her. To jump to the assumption that no information equals lying or evil unseen things is classic Conspiracy Theory. Or would you like to appeal the smart folks out here with say, evidence? Or is that locked away in Area 51?
