Poll: Rate of uninsured Americans drops

(CNN) - A new survey indicates 15.6% of Americans don't have health insurance, marking the lowest rate since 2008.

According to a Gallup poll released Monday, the current rate is down from 18% in the third quarter of 2013, which was an all-time high.

The poll comes as good news for the White House, a week after it announced more than 7 million people had signed up on the federal and state exchanges for health care insurance.

The health care law also includes expanded Medicaid insurance for the poor in many states, but those participants are not part of the sign-up total.

For the health care law to work successfully, the Obama administration needs a significant portion of enrollees to be young. According to Gallup, "the uninsured rate dropped by about the same amount among adults aged 26 to 64 as it did among those aged 18-25."

The rate fell across every major demographic group, but it dropped the most for lower-income Americans and African-Americans.

Gallup interviewed 43,562 adults by telephone from January 2 to March 31. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus one percentage point.

CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

    nice spin cnn.

According to Gallup, the number of uninsured has fallen by a greater amount since the start of open enrollment on Oct. 1. Gallup shows the percentage spiked to 18 percent at the end of the third quarter. But the spike could be attributed in part to people being kicked off their prior coverage, due to changes in the health care law. A look back at mid-2013 shows the percentage of uninsured, before the run-up to open enrollment, was also at 17.1 percent. So the number of people gaining coverage since then would still be roughly 3.5 million.

So, for a lousy 2.4%, Obama created chaos in the health insurance industry, further divided an already-badly-divided country, wasted billions of dollars, is going to waste trillions more, and attacked the concepts of individual freedom and responsibility.

The only good that might come of it is at least the temporary banishment of a lot of Democrats from Congress.

The rate can't actually fall as they still don't have any numbers, the backend of the website is still not finished so companies have no idea who has paid and last but not least compared to what??? Most who are now in Obama care were thrown off by this book cooking law??? Is CNN really this vapid or do they simple lie with no shame?

Hey Enough- I misread your post. You were talking about Govt. Give Aways, like Tax Breaks to Oil Cos., not Voter Fraud. I get my Repub. Boogeymen mixed up sometimes.

    "for a lousy 2.4%,

Gotta love the ridiculous effort on the part of conservatives to pretend like the deadline at the end of March marked the absolute end of all enrollment and that whatever the ACA has or hasn't achieved at that point is the end of the story. Grow up, fools.

"15.6% of Americans.... don't have insurance. Nearly 8x as many people can't afford the 'affordable' care act than those who signed up for it."

You should get some perspective. Even more Americans (18%) couldn't afford the old system that the Republicans want to go back to.

Since we're playing the numbers game today, let's see an article on how there have been 5.6 millions private sector jobs created under Pres. Obama compared to -646,000 lost under Pres. Bush.

And you know, just to add to that point, perhaps CNN and the rest of the MSM should stop also trying to pretend that the March 31st deadline marked the end of all enrollment forever and that the numbers are now set in stone. Perhaps you should be informing people that enrollment does indeed continue and that the deadline was just for escaping the penalty/fine for not signing up on time. It's not "partisan" or "liberal" for you to provide truth to the public, particularly when it counteracts an undercurrent of misinformation, no matter how butthurt the GOP/Teatrolls about you doing so just because they were the ones trying to push that misinformation.

I had "junk insurance" called the PCIP plan on the ACA. Bought it for year, until I needed it and it took my savings. What a bogus product! Kids, stay on your parent's plan, and live at home because you'll never be able to affort it out of the basement.

By taking a few brain cells and seconds to read the article shows that Gallup did a poll to get an estimate.
Because they don't have actual numbers.
    Think about it.

What?!!! ACA is the LAW!!! What is the Obama administration doing to hunt down these millions of people who refuse to submit to their dictates?!! Round up all these free riders, as the lefties have called them, and tax them to death or throw them in ObamacareJail as law breakers.

Whereas I agree that we need to “fix” healthcare here I cannot agree with our tax dollars being spent to supplement illegal aliens. I doubt if they can tell us how many of thbem have picked up Obammacare on our dime.

JS- remind me again what goes on your federal tax form- your "illegals" would need a Social Security number and have paid federal income tax to sign-up under the ACA. That means the short answer to your question is: ZERO.

So we spent a billion dollars to insure 2.4%?
Somehow this does not add up! Democratic Party Health Care caused 9 million people to lose their health while only enrolling 7.1 million people!

A great question for the GOP. Why do they moan when America produces 200,000 jobs a month and more Americans get health care insurance? Especially as they continue to do nothing for real Americans. It must be that anti-American strain rampant in their ranks.

The much touted Gallop poll spewed endlessly by the lemming progressives also indicate that the number of newly insured is 3,5 million – NOT THE 7 MIllion claimed and there is no evidence of a surge in the young as again spewed by this distortion machine . So to recap new uninsured to this point 3.5 NOT 7 million and NO surge of young??? Stick that up your marajuana tainted pipes and smoke it!

15.6% of 325,000,000 is STILL 50,700,000 people UNINSURED!! Where is this stampede of everybody that needs healthcare coverage? This is a total joke, a farce, a FRAUD, yet ANOTHER manufactured crisis by the far left Democrats to be used as a justification to take over the healthcare industry.

So Obamacare has now created 50,700,000 instant criminals in this country. How are we going to deal with this massive, willfull, disregard of the law? Are we goin gto have to hire 100,000 IRS agents to go after them? Welcome to the new leftist Democrat reality for this country.
