(CNN) – President Barack Obama's aunt has died in Boston after a lengthy battle with cancer, according to her immigration lawyer.
Margaret W. Wong and Associates released a statement Tuesday that Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of Obama’s late father, Barack Obama, Sr., had died on Monday in Boston.
Onyango was born in Kenya in 1952 and became well known in 2008 when questions about her immigration status came to light during her nephew’s first run for president.
Onyango applied for political asylum in 2002 due to violence in Kenya. Her request was turned down. She appealed twice but was denied each time and ordered to leave the country.
Wong fought on her behalf and in 2010 she won her asylum case with the Immigration Court in Boston. Wong later helped her obtain her green card.
CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.
CNN's Lawrence Crook and Dana Davidsen contributed to this report.
I am so glad she is dead. She got special immigration status because her nephew is an illegal black African Kenyan wannabe-president/ faux-president. He is no president. I do NOT recognize him as president.
R.I.P. with that said Barack was born in Kenya.
RIP Ms Onyango. My prayers are with your family.
My condolences Mr prez, All flags should be at half mast.
meanwhile in other news I am the first to comment
REST IN PEACE
That's the Democrat way of getting rid of an illegal alien – let them stay in this country and collect welfare until they die.
What did she know about MA370? Benghazi? Was she "Vince Fostered"???
Don't act like you don't know her Obama, because you a scared from what your white friends will say, or your political friends..acknowledge your family.
What changes are going to be made in Social Security ?
Regardless of your politics, do what your mother told you (or should have). If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all. Condolences to the President that I disagree with on everything, for his loss.
RIP Zeituni! May the Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on your soul.
Aside from her relationship to Obama, I have to admire her for fighting for asylum after she was told to leave the country. She didn't back down, but continued to fight.
All will die one day.
The real question we should be asking where are we going when we die, heaven or hell?
If this lady had followed Jesus as her Lord and Savior, heaven is sure for her.
"President’s aunt, Zeituni Onyango, dies"
Hmm, so much for Obamacare!
And the "Hate Obama for any reason posters will obey the hive mind.".
Out of curiousity, how did this woman support herself for the 8 years she was her illegally? Did she have a job? Was she a consultant to the Obama campaign? A government contractor? Was she a "community organizer"? Who paid her legal bills? So many unanswered questions.
Watch the vile racists come out of their subterranean colonies.
This is a terrible day for our country. How horrible. Let's all people mourn for our beloved president and his aunt- Zeituni Onyango. "furaha wewe ni maiti"
May she rest in peace. May God be with her family during this time of grief.
RIP to the lady.
Lulz to the 'CIC'
2002 denied aslyum. Turned down twice on appeal and ordered to leave the country. 2010 (Obama president) in liberal MA she can stay! Duh! But RIP.
An illigal alien just like obama
Is it any wonder we're broke? This woman comes here illegally, lives in public housing, gets public assistance, and I'm just guessing she doesn't have health insurance. And we're stuck paying the bill.
And now the haters start in 3...2...1...
Rest in peace, Mrs. Onyango.
