Pelosi suggests Republicans not acting on immigration because of race

Washington (CNN) - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi suggested House Republicans were blocking action on immigration reform because of racial issues.

"I think race has something to do with the fact that they're not bringing up an immigration bill," Pelosi told reporters at her weekly press conference Thursday.

Referring to GOP members, Pelosi added, "I've heard them say to the Irish, 'If it was just you, this would be easy.'"

Pelosi was responding to a question about Attorney General Eric Holder's remarks at a civil rights event suggesting congressional Republicans treated him and President Obama differently than others who have held their positions. The Democratic Leader sidestepped whether she believed race was a factor in the GOP's posture, but said of congressional Republicans, "generally speaking they are disrespectful to the representatives of the President's administration, very disrespectful."

Michael Steel, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, didn't directly respond to Pelosi citing race, but insisted the House isn't moving forward on immigration legislation because Republicans don't trust the President to carry out the laws in place now.

"The Speaker has said again and again he wants to address the broken immigration system. The problem right now is that we have too many examples of the President not enforcing current laws," Steel told CNN.

Pelosi- ??? Wow this from the party that has kept the blacks in democratic servitude for decades while lowering their standards and social skills for votes???

If its Thursday, it must be Democrat race baiting day....

Let's see.... earlier this week it was ginning up the war on women and pay equality, now two birds with one stone, ginning up race to get the blacks and hispanics to vote in November. I'm sure the class warfare and scaring the elderly once again are not far behind. Honestly America, how many times do we have to see this horrendous Democrat movie before we see what they are doing?

I do not need Nancy Pelosi to speak on my behalf. These democrat politicians are using us, black people, as their scapegoats to further their careers. Maybe Bill Clinton and the democrats thought that we are dumb and decided to pass affirmative action but as far as I am concerned that is an insult to me and my black people. They feel that they own us but I do not need them to speak on my behalf. We need to get rid of politicians like Pelosi and Harry Reid because I fee they are too partisan and they are the hold up in Washington. They need to retire and retire now!!!!!!!! As far as I am concerned, I feel the democrats are racists to my people because they are trying to keep us down and poor because they want our votes for the freebies they are handing out. It is an insult to my people and we should vote against them (democrats) to show that we do not need them

    rs,
Just curious why you feel that African Americans need "assistance". Why do say that? Are they not able to take care of themselves? There inlies the difference. You look at African Americans as different Americans rather than just Americans.

Also, what voting rights are being taken away from African Americans? Clearly, you don't think that they can even get an ID. Why do you have such low standards for them?

  5. GOP = Greed Over People

Well, duh, the GOP is not concerned about building a fence along the Canadian border, just the Mexican border.

That means they are ok with white Canadians coming in, it is just all those brown ones, they want kept out of "their" country!

Maybe it's because a few of them realize that would represent a failure to represent the american people. This bill will result in 12 years of wage depression for the american people according to the CBO. Not now, not ever. All the other dem. talking points about minimum wage, wage disparity and such are all deceit. Pay no attention to what they say. Pay attention to what they do and they are about to throw americans under a bus.

I absolutely love it when you try to play that game. It's so insanely insulting and offensive to the minority community when you dismiss the obvious efforts to suppress minority turnout as "why do you have such low standards for them" that I really can't ask you to say it enough. Please, PLEASE, proceed...repeat it ad nauseum and drive as many minorities into the arms of the liberal movement as possible.

Oh, tom I. There you go again spouting off on what YOU think others are (or should) be thinking. I can only speak for myself, but your consistent trying to suger-coat what the Republican party is already ON PUBLIC RECORD of saying as being their INTENT in many states across America cannot be taken as simple opinion. It is FACT.

In order for republicans to ensure they are not racist, and show that they respect diversity, they work tirelessly to suppress the vote of poor people living in urban areas, make sure women have limited reproductive rights, vote against immigration reform, vote against veterans on food stamps, vote to cut Medicare, vote to repeal ACA, vote against poor children, in order to give tax cuts to the wealthy.

  18. ThinkAgain: Don't like Congress? Get rid of the repub/tea bag majority.

The gop is not acting on immigration because they know that the majority of illegal immigrants in this country are Hispanic – and the gop further knows how it's the gop that sponsors legislation requiring people to carry papers; that considers it the "kiss of death" for Jeb Bush to say immigration reform is an "act of love;" and that it was Karl Rove who introduced illegal immigration as a wedge issue back in about 2006.

These actions and others, coupled with Dems actually trying to DO something about immigration (other than say we should build a fence) and actually creating/sponsoring/supporting legislation that addresses immigration in a positive way, these actions and others will drive immigrants to vote for Dems.

And as we all know, with the gop it's Party Uber Alles – regardless of the negative consequences for our country.

Ah ha! So that would be a departure from the current GOP plan of saying NO to anything Obama wants and inciting the neanderthal conservative voting base with veiled and overt racist references.

No. The GOP is not acting on immigration because this president has shown a willingness to enforce only the parts of laws that he likes. He has unconstitutionally changed the ACA 37 times (and complains of the GOP democratically failing to change it 50 times). I don't blame the GOP for not trusting Obama an inch.

"This bill will result in 12 years of wage depression"

What wonderful hyperbole you guys come up with by ignoring the actual data/numbers.

First, it would only be a reduction in AVERAGE wages/salaries of 0.1% up to 2023. That results primarily from a few things, but mostly that with the expansion of the economy it would cause, there would be more unskilled labor positions AND (and this is the important part) more unskilled labor positions being reported, instead of being hidden under the table. After that, it would start increasing average wages...estimated at about 0.5% increase by 2025.

Second, that same report that you're now going to tell me was "fuzzy math" and "skewed" found that the additional tax revenue will more than cover any additional spending, reducing the deficit by $160 BILLION within the first decade and by $685 BILLION by the second decade.

Third, same report, found that this bill would cause an increase in Gross Domestic Product of 3.3% by 2023 and by 5.4% by 2033.

Fourth, and I forget if it's the same report or in a different CBO report, CBO found that this bill would create SIX MILLION JOBS within the first decade, an average of 14,000 jobs per congressional district.

Now you know why (aside from race), the GOP/Teatrolls do not want this bill to pass: it would help America, would be something they can't take credit for (not anymore after this crap) and would help destroy their main leverage devices, the deficit and the debt. What the heck would they talk about anymore without scary deficits and debt to use as demagoguery and hostages and brinksmanship games...not to mention with the Dems being able to take credit for the deficits and debt being reduced that much?
