Woman throws shoe at Hillary Clinton

(CNN) - A woman hurled a shoe at Hillary Clinton on Thursday during a speech in Las Vegas, according to the Secret Service.

She ducked and it missed her, joking afterward about the incident that occurred during an appearance before a recycling trade group.

"My goodness, I didn't know solid waste management was so controversial," she quipped.

"Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did," she added.

The Secret Service took the woman into custody. They said she was not a ticketed guest and slipped past hotel security.

She was not named and only identified as a protester. But it was not clear what she was protesting.

The incident happened shortly after Clinton took the stage to address the meeting at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

Mark Carpenter, spokesman for The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, said the woman was not affiliated with his group and was not credentialed for the event.

He said she "must have slipped under the rope at the last second."

"I saw papers fly when the protester stood up. I saw papers flying in the air," he said.

Carpenter said there were about 1,000 people in attendance.

Clinton's appearance is the latest in a series of high-profile speaking engagements for the former secretary of state since leaving the Obama administration. She is considered the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 presidential race.

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

Why a shoe? Was it an Arab woman? They're the ones who think shoes are demeaning. And what was she protesting? Not enough recycling? Too much? Inquiring minds want to know.

Anna, why is it that so many Republicans that post on CNN have to resort to name-calling like "libturd" and yet you wonder why more and more people are voting Democrat? Personally, I'm an independent, but it's immaturity that predominantly comes from the right that leads me to vote Democrat more often than not.

The 10 least educated states voted for Republican Romney.
9 of the 10 highest educated states voted for President Obama.

Simply put: Intelligent people vote for progressive Democrats.

Republicans may be good at whipping out their civil war rifles and tossing shoes ... but really we cannot expect much more from this "Party of 17%".

Future President Hillary Clinton will continue the supurb work that President Obama is doing.

What has happened to our secret service division? Drunks Johns picking up pros when they should be working.
They have a highly stressful job. I understand that but when you are doing reconnaissance or at an event you need to be on your toes 24/7!

Does no one find it odd that when the same thing happened to President bush, in a dangerous warzone, where it could have been a grenade, he was made on CNN to look like an oaf, but here, in this case, it is used to make Hilary look clever...

I would like to know what the Secret Service was doing when the shoe was thrown? Why didn't a Secret Service agent throw himself in front of the ex first lady, and take a shoe for her? Do they not know that shoes kill people, people don't kill people?!

That woman? ...nothing more than a trained simpleton extreme right-winger slag watching too much foxnews and listening to limbaugh and beck.

Did you notice how quick she raised her hands before the secret agents? Some one from the extreme right klan told her how to proceed.

When there is so much right-wingers barking so loudly and so full of hatred, it is because our President and Hillary are on track. Way to go !!!

No need for extreme right profanities. No need to be inarticulate a la paul "Michael Murray" ryan. Thank You.

You would have made a far better point if you had left off the "libturd". You would have had an honest point, and would have made it effectively.

By stopping to the level you did, your point was overshadowed by the fact that you opted to be a hater instead. You chose being a "see you next tuesday" over making a valid point.

Remember that when a shoe flies at you.

She took the thing very well. This is a good example of really poor protesting. It's unclear what she was protesting... it's just... hate. While Republicans do smile upon hate, they have never used to make any convincing changes (or lack of changes). This isn't helping anybody accomplish anything.
