Beau Biden says he plans to run for governor in Delaware

(CNN) – Beau Biden said Thursday he won't seek re-election this year as Delaware attorney general and plans instead to run for governor in 2016.

"Over the past few months, as I've been planning to run for reelection, I have also been giving a great deal of thought to running for Governor in 2016," he said in a statement. "What started as a thought-a very persistent thought-has now become a course of action that I wish to pursue."

Beau Biden, 45, is Vice President Joe Biden's eldest son. He was elected as Delaware attorney general in 2006.

"After careful consideration, I have concluded that it is not right to ask for your support in 2014, knowing that my focus would be divided between doing my job as Attorney General while at the same time running as a candidate for Governor," he said.

Questions have been raised about his health, however, since he underwent a procedure in August at a Houston hospital after feeling weak and disoriented on a family vacation. He made few public appearances in the months following the procedure.

In 2010, he suffered what doctors said was a mild stroke. His speech and motor skills were not affected.

His announcement Thursday came only in written form - sent out in an email to supporters and posted to his website. He did not hold a press conference, and he has not spoken publicly about his decision in an interview.

He served in Iraq for one year as a captain with the Delaware Army National Guard. Biden acted as a prosecutor in the U.S. attorney's office in Philadelphia from 1997 to 2002.

He and his wife, Hallie, have two children.

CNN's Dana Davidsen, Steve Brusk, and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Imagine if Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz had said the same thing. They were elected to their positions so that they can campaign for 4 years with Presidential aspirations.

Obama did the same thing, after serving only 18 months in the Senate. I eagerly await your condemnation of his actions.

Good for Beau – Vice President Biden is a long time successful politician, and his son will likely make a great Governor.

Trust me: California's best governor in history is Jerry Brown today, son of a former governor. From record deficit to record $30 BILLION surplus this year!

Well I would hope so after jacking California's taxes even higher now making them the highest in the country. At least until everybody leaves for other more hospitable environments. Eventually Democrats will turn California into another Detriot. It may take longer but the state is already deep in debt so they are well on their way.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Eventually" huh? Yeah, except unlike the CITY of Detroit, the STATE of California doesn't rely on one single industry to float the entire economy.

@Anonymous, if California is destined to be another Detroit, then we've got the birthplace of the tax revolt people to thank for that. God bless the GOP for gutting property taxes in CA and then encouraging " fees" to be attached on everything that moves within the state for putting them in the hole in the first place. How many GOPer governors stood there and did nothing after Reagan reign of error in Sacramento? awww, come on are you saying you've forgotten?

  22. Pick from the Democrat Losers & Rejects

    Get Real
If BIDEN was GOOD enough to be HIS 2-term VP, SHOULDN'T the choice be OBVIOUS???? Makes no sense he spent 2008 blasting Hillary, and now everything is good? If he endorses her, I will not vote ANY of the Ds
    --

Joe Biden has already run for President TWICE. He got very little support and dropped out early.

Hillary Clinton was rejected byt the far left Democrat Party as being too conservative for their tastes.

That is the Democrat field for 2016. Three time losers and rejects. Both dinosaurs in their 70's. One is senile and the other a proven incompetent. Some choice.

I can agree that Obama was maybe not ready to be the leader of the free world. More experience would have definitely helped. But here is where I see a major hypocrisy. How can you run 3 inexperienced guys after complaining about the lack in experience in our current President? You backed yourself into a corner with that one.

Nathan, Beau Biden served in Iraq. It does not matter what his duties were over there, he was serving this country. He deserves respect for that. Why don't you enlighten us as to why the conservative idea of supporting the troops is meaningless soundbites and cheap made in China ribbons on their bumpers, and only if they agree with them politically?
