Reid calls supporters of Nevada cattle rancher 'domestic terrorists'

(CNN) - Never one to mince words, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, lumped supporters of Bunkerville rancher Cliven Bundy in with the Eric Rudolphs, Richard Reids and Timothy McVeighs.

The senate majority leader labeled those who defended the rancher against a Bureau of Land Management cattle roundup "domestic terrorists" at a Thursday evening question-and-answer session hosted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"Those people who hold themselves out to be patriots are not. They’re nothing more than domestic terrorists,” Reid said. "I repeat: What went on up there was domestic terrorism.”

Reid's remarks come on the heels of a tense, weeklong showdown that drew armed militia groups from across the country to the cattleman's side, especially after a YouTube video captured a tussle teetering on violence between rangers and protesters.

The BLM ultimately decided to shut down its weeklong roundup of Bundy's cattle Saturday after the incident.

Bundy owed nearly $1 million to the government and has avoided paying federal grazing fees for 20 years. His dispute with the government began around 1993 when the bureau changed grazing rules for the 600,000-acre Gold Butte area to protect an endangered desert tortoise, CNN affiliate KLAS reported.

For his part, Reid insisted that the conflict was not over. The Nevada lawmaker said he spoke with both federal and state law officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder, and was given assurances a task force would be established to deal with the Bundy case.

“It is an issue that we cannot let go, just walk away from,” Reid said.

While the senator mainly took issue with the hundreds who flocked to Bundy's cause, Reid also jabbed at the rancher's reputation.

"He doesn’t pay his taxes," Reid said. "He doesn’t pay his fees. And he doesn’t follow the law. He continues to thumb his nose at authority.”

Good to know Harry Reid throws around the word "terrorist" just as loosely as liberals use the word "racist".

So criminal banks not only get a pass, but get bailed out with billions of taxpayer dollars, and people defending thier home and possesions get labeled domestic terrorists?

He is not standing on the Senate floor when he made these wrong remarks. He is liable for any remarks he made that are slander. He goes around saying people do not pay taxes and will not offer any proof. Hope they sue him for everything he has.

Will the NYTimes, Washington Post, LATmes, National Enquirer, get down there and find out the connection between this ranch's actions and Harry Reid"s family. Senator Reid is showing way too much interest in this problem. While they are at it they find out how Senator Reid made his millions while being a career politician all his life.

Yes and the people of this country are tired of the domestic terrorist who wear badges and suits taking from us. They are always in their offices writing policies and sending their militia in to shoot kids, farmers old men with canes. There are more crimes in the dog houses then the sheep. Go look in their dog houses and ask yourself if they don't have it all, and ask how they are worth so much? As yet again they plan to take, seize or control what we do. Not all of America is threat and no action. Look around and think why do they threaten action and do nothing around the world. threats turn into non action, here we threaten and move in and take isn't that why Russia is in conflict. Why should we listen to a bunch of policy makers when the world says eh don't worry they just threaten there no power there anymore. So we lose abroad and violate the feeders of our country. Good job bullies.

I wonder how many of those "patriots" would lay down their assault rifles pick up shovels to fight wild fires on BLM land or defend someone in public "low income housing" that refused to pay rent or move out...??
AND...BTW, where do they stand on the issue of "Native American" rights....or.....large timber companies that want to clear cut our National Forest for profit without regards to wildlife...and for further information, Bundy was only paying $1.35 per month when the going rate for private pasture land is over $15.00 per month.....guess he wasn't too proud to be one of the "guberment moochers" that the "Right" always complains about.

Yes they are absolutely. They are a well armed but not well regulated militia and they clearly are anti-government. The icing on the cake is the ranchers misuse of Federal land and not paying for the rights to use it. I'm assuming he has land of his own for his cattle to graze.

This is extremely troubling. I define terrorist as those who want to mass murder innocent people for political reasons, mainly to promote terror. The guys who protested in favor of land rights haven't killed anyone, am I correct?
I would like to discuss with Sen. Reid his definition of terrorism and exactly who our enemies are.

"He doesn’t pay his taxes," Reid said. "He doesn’t pay his fees. And he doesn’t follow the law. He continues to thumb his nose at authority.”

Send him to a prison same as anyone else. He doesn't own the land just cause his fathers father once used it.

Terrorism – the new "he's a Communist!". The way government officials throw around the word "terrorist" so nonchalantly is beyond pathetic and blatantly transparent. Anyone who disagrees with the big government and takes any action to resist is now labeled a "domestic terrorist".

Control over the general population is the primary motivation behind throwing around the word terrorist as a justification to every intrusive action. The Constitution is thrown away and ignored and "terrorism" is used as justification, just the same as when the Constitution was ignored during the Unconstitutional kidnapping and imprisonment of Japanese Americans who were forced into interment camps.

It's a sad what has become of a place that used to be 'the land of the free, home of the brave'.

I find it disgusting that the same people Reid, who slowed the budget talks and cost us the taxpayers billions, and Holder who gave weapons to drug cartels could even be thought of as reliable sources. They both should be in jail.
