Reid calls supporters of Nevada cattle rancher 'domestic terrorists'

(CNN) - Never one to mince words, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, lumped supporters of Bunkerville rancher Cliven Bundy in with the Eric Rudolphs, Richard Reids and Timothy McVeighs.

The senate majority leader labeled those who defended the rancher against a Bureau of Land Management cattle roundup "domestic terrorists" at a Thursday evening question-and-answer session hosted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"Those people who hold themselves out to be patriots are not. They’re nothing more than domestic terrorists,” Reid said. "I repeat: What went on up there was domestic terrorism.”

Reid's remarks come on the heels of a tense, weeklong showdown that drew armed militia groups from across the country to the cattleman's side, especially after a YouTube video captured a tussle teetering on violence between rangers and protesters.

The BLM ultimately decided to shut down its weeklong roundup of Bundy's cattle Saturday after the incident.

Bundy owed nearly $1 million to the government and has avoided paying federal grazing fees for 20 years. His dispute with the government began around 1993 when the bureau changed grazing rules for the 600,000-acre Gold Butte area to protect an endangered desert tortoise, CNN affiliate KLAS reported.

For his part, Reid insisted that the conflict was not over. The Nevada lawmaker said he spoke with both federal and state law officials, including Attorney General Eric Holder, and was given assurances a task force would be established to deal with the Bundy case.

“It is an issue that we cannot let go, just walk away from,” Reid said.

While the senator mainly took issue with the hundreds who flocked to Bundy's cause, Reid also jabbed at the rancher's reputation.

"He doesn’t pay his taxes," Reid said. "He doesn’t pay his fees. And he doesn’t follow the law. He continues to thumb his nose at authority.”

Harry Reid reminds of that crazy Pat Robertson. They open their mouths and the craziest junk comes out. Harry Reid is playing a dangerous game, however. His comments are extremely divisive! What doesn't he understand about American's helping each other out....?

We liberals believe that the government should go after the employers who hire said illegals. If they did their due dilligence, those illegals would stay home because they would realize they AREN'T going to get a job. If the feds were to make examples of a few scofflaw business owners and imprison them, fine them and seize their assets the problem would go away on its own.

Harry Reid calls the Bundys terrorist and I call Harry Reid a tyrant. The founding fathers would be ashamed the balance of powers between federal and state was put in place to protect us from these tyrants.

End of Reid's career. Good. He clearly doesn't understand America's sentiment on armed Government agression.

That land is for all of us, not just for a rancher that wants free grazing lands. These are public lands and are not to be used for profit.

Timing is everything. Maybe Bundy is wrong. Maybe not. Who really knows, guess that will get sorted out in court. What we do know is that the timing of this action by the feds is rather interesting. Reid is engaged in bringing Chinese solar energy firms to Nevada, and plans for a site at this location. His former staffer becomes the Director of the BLM, and within his first week in office he sends his enforcers out to shut down open grazing on the land and confiscate the cattle, something that's been a "problem" for over 20 years. The timing seems rather coincidental since they've had 20 years to act and waited to do so when it will benefit the Reids and their Chinese investors. Believe both parties in this incident bear some of the blame, but blame Reid more for wanting to profit from it. Believe me, the survival of the desert tortoise was not really at issue here, it was a convenient excuse.

I PAY TAXES, I OBEY THE LAW, I PAY MY BILL'S. It has nothing to do with dictatorship of the government. Why should you and I have to pay taxes and obey the law and this guy not. Do you see any armed militias coming to your rescue NO. Is the government Republicans, Democrats, Teaparty or Independent's "always right" NO. Are we "always right" NO. Thats why we follow the law created by the majority. Until the majority agree to change the law we must follow it to keep a civilized society.

It does at least appear we have learned some valuable lessons from previous attempts to arrest people with lots of their friends around. No govt shootout with this bunch at least for now. Best way to handle this – back off and let the fever die down and then when we get the chance – arrest the man and charge him then settle this in court. It is scary that he breaks the law and a bunch of armed idiots show up to start a fight with law officers. I'd have lost no sleep over the lot of them ending up in jail but no need for law enforcement to lose guys.
