Bill Clinton to headline fundraiser for Giffords’ group

Washington (CNN) -- Former President Bill Clinton will headline a fundraiser in Manhattan on Wednesday evening for the gun control group founded by former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly, a source familiar with the event confirmed to CNN.

Approximately 50 people will attend the fundraiser for the group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, at a private home.

Giffords, wounded in the head during a 2011 shooting in Tucson, and Kelly, a former astronaut, are both gun owners. They formed the group last year to help push greater background checks for gun purchases – a measure that’s been strongly pushed by the White House, but was defeated in the Senate last year despite a lot of attention following the Sandy Hook school shooting.

Last week, on the one-year anniversary of the defeat of the Senate measure, Giffords promised to be active this election year to help counter the efforts of the National Rifle Association.

“In the absence of a Congress ready to act to reduce gun violence, we will keep working to create a different Congress. And come November, surely some of those politicians who were unwilling to stand up to the gun lobby a year ago will face the consequences at the ballot box. They will wish desperately that they had heeded the will of their constituents,” she wrote in an op-ed in USA Today.

Officials from the group said they will be spending money to support some candidates in this year’s mid-terms who support the expanded checks but have not made any final decisions.

Americans for Responsible Solutions raised more than $2.5 million in the first three months of this year and has said it has more than $7.5 million in available cash.

Among its recent efforts, the group lobbied and ran ads against a bill in Georgia, signed into law on Wednesday, saying state residents with the appropriate concealed carry permits can carry weapons into some bars, churches, school zones, government buildings and certain parts of airports.

Since its formation, the political action committee has raised almost $14.5 million – in part to confront the NRA and its vehement opposition to broadening such checks.

The NRA holds its annual convention beginning Friday in Indianapolis featuring such speakers as Sens. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, and Marco Rubio, R-Florida, and Republican Govs. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Mike Pence of Indiana.

One expected focus for the speakers will be former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his recent commitment to spend $50 million against the NRA and its priorities.

The Clinton fundraiser was first reported by Politico.

Georgia might be a state to avoid as well, as it is run by the little jerk, LaPierre.

The only guns that men should carry around are their upper arms, their biceps and triceps.

Each day, tom l posts absurdities, as most RWNJ bloggers get paid to do. A few weeks ago he posted he lived in California, and today he posted he lives in Atlanta. At any rate, it is a classic example of losing touch with reality.

Afterwards, he was a nut. Before he did it, the NRA would have called him a "good guy with a gun". The NRA should have told him to swap his sign from "good" to "bad" so we could all tell. What a cartoon view of life.

And by the way, how come all the "good guys" out there are not stopping nuts like this, like you say?

Note to self: When traveling out of Florida, take the long way through the panhandle and head north through Alabama to avoid Georgia like the plague it's becoming. This is unfortunate. I was really hoping Altanta would get the the 2016 Dem convention, but now not so much.

If only something could be done Congresswoman Giftords(yes I know she's not in Congress anymore it's just a show of respect.) However the NRA owns this country and the GOP. And don't get me started on the cowardly democrats that are afraid to stand up to the GOP and the NRA. If Sandy Hook and the sight of 20 dead people mostly children didn't change their opinion nothing will.

God help our country. I won't be able to go to Meijer or Wal-Mart without the fear of a shoot out. 😡

Shouldn't we all just wait to see what California tom l, who lives in Atlanta has to say on this? Hannity isn't on for a few hours yet, so we need the RWNJ talking point now from tom.

..." If Sandy Hook and the sight of 20 dead people ..."
    --------
AND: Remember at Sandy Hook some of the guns used were stolen from a gun owner and used to kill that gun owner.
What was that about the magic and glory of self defense NRA?
    It is largely a myth.
