Poll: Kentucky voters split on a potential Rand Paul presidential campaign

(CNN) – A new poll indicates about a third of Kentucky voters want their home-state senator, Rand Paul, to run for president, while another third want him to stay out of the 2016 race.

According to a New York Times/Kaiser Family Foundation survey released Tuesday, 31% of registered voters in the Bluegrass State say "yes" to a Paul presidential bid, compared to 34% who prefer the first term senator to avoid the presidential horse race.

Another third (32%) say they don't know enough about the first-term senator to give an opinion. Three percent are undecided.

Paul, who's been aggressively building his national profile, says he'll wait until after the November midterm elections to make his decision. His name has topped some  recent 2016 Republican presidential nomination polls as he seeks to broaden his appeal to more mainstream Republicans.

"It's better than placing at the bottom of those polls," Paul joked Tuesday while speaking at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics.

On job approval ratings, 53% of Kentucky voters say they approve of the way Paul is handling his role as senator, while 32% disapprove and 14% have no opinion.

It's a different story for the senior senator from Kentucky. Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell's approval ratings are underwater, with 40% approving his actions in Congress, while 52% disapprove and 8% don't have an opinion.

That's not the best news for a longtime incumbent senator who's running for re-election this year and faces challenges from both the right and the left.

If McConnell makes it to the general election, the survey indicates McConnell would be in a statistical tie with likely Democratic nominee Alison Lundergan Grimes, 44%-43%.

For the survey, 891 registered voters in Kentucky were interviewed by phone from April 8-15. The sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

Yes, he's the second coming. He's omnipotent. He is the fountain of all wisdom, and makes Solomon look like a Special Ed student. We should all listen to him, and blindly follow whatever he says.

Have I got the basic Libertarian babble down correctly?

Rand Paul is a phony Libertarian. Although saying the things needed to sound good he supports (see his web site) such religious establishment as no abortion from day 1 for all people of any religious belief, agree or not. A Libertarian does not seek to establish a Theocracy.

-–republican foreign policy meant WARS. THESE GUYS DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE PAKISTAN IS, WHERE INDIA IS. These guys talk of foreign policy? Did they ever travel outside of USA? Pathetic.
    - and that from a someone who has not seen daylight in years.
    - democrats foreign policy, make treaties and then tell the allies you're on your own.

And he's right. Many members of the Republican party in the early 1900's were quite anti-war and "conservative." It's the Democrats who've traditionally been the war party.

Yeah, except "traditions" change and your opinion hasn't been the case for nearly half a century.

Since he has about the same amount of time as Senator as the current POTUS, I'd have to agree. But we see how THAT worked out.

@ Lizzie, this, coming from the party that envisioned us staying in Iraq for 50-100 years? This, coming from the people who cooked intel to leverage the tragedy of 9/11 to create a permanant majority? Please, the cynicism of the neocons is beyond belief. Btw, give an an example of Democrats telling people they are on their own own after we singed agreements with them. The agreements were to set the terms under when and how we would leave these countries, in case you forgot. I know you have a double standard where conservatives are concerned, that their mistakes can be explained by some innate superiority, so please spare us the exercise. Your explanations are so transparently false its sickening.

Wanna know what I think? I think that it is okay to run for two offices ... but people should only be able to vote for you once. They should not be able to vote once for POTUS and once for Senator. They should be forced to choose, simply because the candidate is presenting them with the choice.

@Wake up, you are absolutely correct..... there are far fewer corrupt dentists than corrupt lawyers. The difference is indeed huge.

@ Fair, Obama had a few terms in the state senate in IL, so he had plenty of experience prior to running for the Senate. You, however, do seem to favor people with a single term as governor, or someone who cannot even complete the one term they were elected to. Even Sarah Palin has more elected experience than Paul, if you add up her terms as Mayor of Wasilla. Paul is a lightweight, even by your skewed standards.

Actually, randy is an eye doctor who couldn't even pass the American Academy of Opthamology certification exam, so he created his own FOR PROFIT National Board of Opthamology certification board. No surprise HE was the very first certification recipient!

    @ Wake Up:

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Rand Paul was an Ophthalmologist prior to becoming a senator.

32% of Rand Paul's constituents are not familiar enough of Rand Paul to form an opinion of Rand Paul? What a blow this has to be to his strutting ego.

Yeah, but, isn't "Randy" a self made, self certified optometrist? Besides, Barack Obama had over a decade in the Ilinois state house before he came to Washington. Obama was a constitutional law professor, while "Randy" has a suspect Ph.D.
