Rand Paul on being ‘libertarian-ish’

(CNN) – Sen. Rand Paul hopes to infuse the Republican Party with some of his libertarian views, but the Kentucky Republican said Friday he’d still support the GOP presidential nominee in 2016 even if he didn’t entirely agree with that person.

“I think a libertarian twist or a libertarian influence in the Republican Party is good, but I’ve pretty much just stayed with the party and plan on doing so,” he said at Harvard’s Institute of Politics.

BREAKING… FEDS CLOSE TO GRIMM CHARGES: Federal prosecutors are preparing criminal charges against two-term New York GOP Rep. Michael Grimm, capping a two-year FBI investigation that ranges from his business dealings to his first campaign for Congress in 2010, U.S. officials briefed on the matter said. Grimm made headlines in January when he was shown on camera threatening to throw a reporter over the Capitol Hill balcony after an interview following the State of the Union address. – Evan Perez

NRA ISSUES HILLARY WARNING… Gun-rights advocates praised the punishment of Colorado legislators for new firearms restrictions and blasted a new gun-control effort launched by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It was all part of a predictable helping of rhetorical red meat at Friday’s opening of the annual National Rifle Association meeting in Indianapolis. The opening session also included warnings about a potential Hillary Clinton presidential run. “They're out there laying the groundwork to put a Clinton back in the White House," NRA President Wayne LaPierre said to a round of boos. – Ashley Killough and Dana Davidsen

(CNN) – Federal prosecutors are preparing criminal charges against Rep. Michael Grimm, capping a two-year FBI investigation that ranges from his business dealings to his first campaign for Congress in 2010, U.S. officials briefed on the matter said.

In recent months, public attention has focused on the 44-year-old House member's campaign donations after a friend and donor was charged with funneling illegal contributions to Grimm's campaign four years ago.

Feds subpoena legislative panel investigating N.J. bridge scandal

(CNN) – Federal prosecutors have subpoenaed documents and other information from the state legislative committee investigating the political scandal roiling the administration of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

The development represents a notable escalation in the overall probe of whether top Christie appointees abused their authority in orchestrating traffic jams at the foot of the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee to punish that town’s mayor politically.

NRA cites eroding freedoms, warns of Hillary candidacy

(CNN) – Gun-rights advocates heralded efforts in punishing legislators at the ballot box in Colorado for new firearms restrictions and ripped into a new, well-funded gun-control effort launched by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

It was all part of a predictable helping of red-meat rhetoric at Friday’s opening of the annual National Rifle Association meeting in Indianapolis that also included warnings about a potential Hillary Clinton presidential run and an erosion of American freedoms.

Paul highlights bigger GOP 'tent' in meeting with top Romney donors

(CNN) - They may seem like a bit of an odd couple - but Sen. Rand Paul met on Friday with top donors to Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign.

Paul, the first term Republican senator from Kentucky who's seriously considering a 2016 GOP bid for the White House, is known as someone who hails from the conservative/tea party wing of the party, and who also enjoys strong support from libertarians who backed his father's three campaigns for president. And Romney, considered the GOP establishment candidate in 2012, was never truly embraced by the grassroots.

Inside Politics: The age question

Washington (CNN) – Forget, for now, the traditional debates over taxes and spending or national security.

The flashpoint in presidential politics, at the moment anyway, seems to be more about age.

Or experience. Or maturity. Or something like that.

In GOP civil war, an outsized advantage

Washington (CNN) – It's been widely reported. The Republican Party is locked in battle. Establishment Republicans are being challenged by insurgents hoping to purify the brand and return the GOP to small government, free market principles.

The conservative grassroots are organizing this election season to elect their preferred, ideologically pure candidate, even if that means unseating House and Senate incumbents. It's a strategy they had in 2010 and 2012 with mixed results.
