In GOP civil war, an outsized advantage

Washington (CNN) – It's been widely reported. The Republican Party is locked in battle. Establishment Republicans are being challenged by insurgents hoping to purify the brand and return the GOP to small government, free market principles.

The conservative grassroots are organizing this election season to elect their preferred, ideologically pure candidate, even if that means unseating House and Senate incumbents. It's a strategy they had in 2010 and 2012 with mixed results.

And beef jerky...don't forget the beef jerky...we can pretend it's that Bundy guy's soon-to-be-confiscated cattle. Watching the GOP/Teatrolls obliviously manufacture their own ideological singularity and get sucked into the resulting demographic wormhole of cosmic irrelevance is just too much fun....like a schadenfreude carnival ride. Hopefully, the event horizon captures the looks of shock and dismay as they realize they're caught spiraling into its gravitational field and truly have no control over their fate anymore.

What does the phrase "small government, free enterprise" mean to the conservative extremist? I fear it means big business and it's wealthy owners are free to do anything they want with no government interference whatsoever, leaving the middle class white and blue collar workers at their mercy. This will put the control of the nation clearly in the hands of 2-5% of the population. Therein lies the true conservative value with many of America's moderate republicans duped into following along their path of deception.

The people are sick of being turned into Lib robots, who are not allowed to even speak, unless they talk about nothing of importance.

Yeah, well, GOPerville's been re-fighting the Civil War year after year since God knows how long. It was only a manner of time before the South rose up again against the very party that's been hankering and pandering and appeasing for their votes year after year.

Guess you can't make GOPerville happy no matter how hard the GOP tries.

This is not true. Just as a Koch started the John Birch Society, they are bank rolling many of these false "grassroots" groups including most Tea Party derivatives. This has been shown over and over even though they tries to hide initially.

"The study, funded by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health, traces the roots of the Tea Party's anti-tax movement back to the early 1980s when tobacco companies began to invest in third party groups to fight excise taxes on cigarettes, as well as health studies finding a link between cancer and secondhand cigarette smoke."

I would like the GOP to really state for the record what they want to do. It appears that there are some in the party who should be libertarians but fear not being able to get elected with that party label.

If they want the government out of so many things, then why haven't these people formed non-profit social welfare organizations that help people get training to do different jobs; to get food to the hungry and provide help and care their fellow ciitzens across the country so that the government doesn't have to do that? Why haven't they done that? Is the fact that they don't care about their fellow person? I'd like to know.

This is a good thing for the GOP, they need more points of veiw for the vision of the party. If they can get over some of their dead issues(mainly abortion) that would help as well.

Abortion and other religious issues are not going away because the radical right christian extremists want their religion in government. That came back to haunt W Bush in office. After he pandered to them, the wanted a return on their investment which he tried (faith based executive orders) but couldn't give them completely.

@Silence- The Huffington Post? Besides Mother Jones you couldn`t have found a more left wing slanted source. I`ve noticed you haven`t said a peep about Tom Steyer or all the rich families going to the WH for a get together?

  19. Two Decades of Democrat Disaster - NO THANKS!!

It's called healthy debate. The far left Democrat Party has purged all the people that weren't far left. Kooky Pelosi is considered a "moderate" in the far left Democrat Party. They really sould consider changing their name the the Socialist-Communist Democrat Party and stop lying to the American people about who they are.

The study was done by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institute of Health. In your effort to speed-type you missed my point that the Koch's have no interest in politics! They started the Tea Party in part to spread disinformation about the safety of cigarettes and to stop cigarette industry taxes. The Bottom Line.

  22. The Real Tom Paine

@Smith, why your obcession about Tom Steyer? Is it because he's going against type, and NOT supporting the the GOP as you seem to think he should, or it it because you're convinced we're ok with him? We're not ok with it, but he's not the one who has spent decades trying to turn this country into something that is exclusively for his benefit. No liberal is ever happy with the uber-rich buying influence, and if you understood that, you would know we don't agree with it. Apparently you are happy with uber-rich conservatives buying elections and supporting moochers, like that rancher.

The SCOTUS decision on "Citizens United" will determine the winner for the heart and soul of the Republican Party. Big Money will protect its interests by buying elections for their incumbent establishment politicians.

an excellent summary. but you did leave out the part about their "small government" mantra being selective as they see fit. "Small government" also means imposing their "values" on everyone regardless of constitutional or current law. Forced prayer, no abortion, making anyone not "Christian" an outcast are also their primary objectives
