Gabby Giffords says she's doing yoga

Washington (CNN) - Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said Tuesday night her spirit is "strong as ever," and she's working hard to recover from her 2011 gunshot wound through different kinds of therapy.

"Speech therapy. Physical therapy. And yoga, too," she told Democratic activists at an event hosted by EMILY's List.

"My spirit's strong as ever. I'm still fighting to make the world a better place, and you can too. Get involved with your community," she said. "Be a leader. Set an example. Strong women get things done. Be passionate. Be courageous. Be your best."

Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona stood alongside Giffords as she read her speech. The former congresswoman was critically wounded in a Tucson mass shooting that killed six and injured 13.

Since the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school massacre in December 2012, Giffords, a gun owner, has been active in the fight for more gun control.

The EMILY's List dinner Tuesday was held to present the group's "Rising Star" award named after Giffords, who received the first recognition in 2012. This year, the honor went to Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, the first woman to lead either party in the state's General Assembly.

California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein of California also spoke at the event, in addition to U.S. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.

EMILY's List has been working to elect Democratic, pro-choice women to office since 1985.

Gabby Giffords has one of the most friendliest smiles ... and lights up her surroundings with refreshing cheerfulness.

--listen, yoga is NOT religion, all MUST DO IT. meditate. It is good. Yes, I need to resume too. You know it when you do it. Lot of benefits. Hospitals need to introduce it too for longer longevity. God bless!!!!!

Good to see her making her way back to as complete a recovery as physically possible under her circumstances.
    She radiates good vibes and...forgiveness.

The difference between her, and Sarah Palin is stark, one had absolutely no class, the other is poised and polite.

Gabrielle speaks of hope, and good things, Sarah speaks or horrible consequences of not electing her ilk, such a difference. Gifford exposes what a hateful witch Palin is, and all she's doing is being herself, how poetic.

Giffords gives back through her grace and dignity, while Palin uses a sacrament as a joke while talking to the people and industry that nearly killed Giffords. Huge difference.

Yes Fair, through her grace, she inspires the Right to hate her. Nothing quite like attacking a shooting victim to make a conservative's day.

    She certainly does Lynda.
The way she has handled what has befallen her has been nothing short of singularly AWESOME.
She makes think that she is a very spiritually grounded individual, for it has been my experience that nothing short of Spirit can ultimately help someone rebound from what occured to Ms. Gifford.
She is to be emulated, at least in the way she carries "her cross" publicly, and as Fair said she is indeed inspiring.

If Sarah Palin can garner headlines with her vitriol at the NRA convention, then it is only fair that equal time be given to someone at the complete opposite end of the spectrum....someone who has been deemed worthy to win an award, and not someone who has deemed themselves worthy of speaking for others.

  19. The Real Tom Paine

@Rafael 51, anytime we have someone who can inspire us through their grace and courage, its newsworthy. The latest tweet from Sarah Palin, or the hysterical ravings of a Ted Nugent or Wayne LaPierre, inspire people for the wrong reasons. They are inspired to be fearful, hateful, and violent. Not everything has to follow the Rupert Murdoch/Roger Ailes method of inciting the weak-minded to riot in order for it to make news.

Curious and sick that conservatives often like to promote those advocating violence (Palin, NRA, TP, etc.) and see no value in those seeking some peaceful improvement in society.

They could talk about George and his painting's, another comparison, Jimmy Carter, and George, one spends his time painting his hero's, the other spends his own money, and most of his time to helping treat diseases that kill and maim the poor, and needy.
