GOP Senate candidate fires off rounds in new ad

(CNN) – Iowa GOP candidate Joni Ernst is continuing to mix things up in her Senate bid with the release of another nontraditional ad, this time showing off her motorcycle-riding and shooting skills.

In her first campaign spot back in March, she made headlines for touting her hog castration talents. But in her latest ad the state senator isn't boasting her ability "to cut pork."

"She's not your typical candidate," the narrator says in the new spot, as Ernst is seen parking a motorcycle.

"Mom. Farm girl. And a lieutenant colonel who carries more than just lipstick in her purse," the narrator continues, as Ernst pulls out a handgun from her bag at a shooting range.

"Joni Ernst will take aim at wasteful spending, and once she sets her sights on Obamacare, Joni is going to unload."

She fires six rounds, then checks her paper target.

"Oh, and one more thing, Joni doesn't miss much," the narrator ads.

Ernst, who has the backing of Sarah Palin, is battling a bunch of other candidates to win Iowa's June primary for the GOP Senate nomination.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, announced through his PAC on Monday that he's also supporting Ernst in the GOP primary.

The winner of November's general election will succeed longtime Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin, who's retiring at the end of this year rather than run for a sixth term in the chamber.

Republicans consider Iowa a potential pick-up seat, after the all-but-certain Democratic nominee, U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, has come under fire for dismissing longtime Iowa GOP Sen. Charles Grassley as "a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school."

Braley later apologized for the comments and noted that both of his parents "grew up on Iowa farms during the Great Depression."

CNN's Peter Hamby, Dana Davidsen, and Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

"Mom. Farm girl. And a lieutenant colonel who carries more than just lipstick in her purse,"

Too bad it's what's in her head that matters and it's proving to be unfortunately empty.

What is it with the GOP, guns and hatred??? I've never seen anything like this in my lifetime. It's like they're all pretending ObamaCare is Obama. This is scary. In order for anyone to move up in the GOP they have to be anti-Obama. I've never seen this level of divisiveness in my life.

And in local Detroit news. 140 sanitation workers are out of jobs today due to privatizing city services. Their families thank the GOP for taking them from middle class to welfare recipients overnight.

""She's not your typical candidate," "

I beg to differ. She's a cookie-cutter radicalized conservative Teatroll panderer plopped right out of the Koch's Bircher Bake Set mold:

    1. Thinks guns are an appropriate way to express anger and frustration over policy differences;
    2. Is engaged in nothing more than reactionary demagoguery and agitprop pandering over said policy differences; and
    3. Offers ZERO discussion, argument or facts regarding viable policy alternatives she intends to pursue.

You just cannot get too loony. Extreme Tea Party types have been sinking a few GOP hopeful races. I say bring 'em on. Tell us every crazy thought that pops into your Palin-wanabe head. A liberal dream come true.

" is continuing to mix things up in her Senate bid with the release of another nontraditional ad"

There is no "mixing up" going on here and this ad is far FAR from "non-traditional." It's become a pervasive theme for the Koch'd up conservative reactionaries running for office to get out a gun and shoot things, particularly the ACA, that are symbolic of what they don't like. This is old tinfoil hat at this point....to the point that it's "traditional" Teatroll pandering.

Republicans have missed the Obamacare target 50 times already, and the trend will continue.

"Joni Ernst will take aim at wasteful spending, and once she sets her sights on Obamacare, Joni is going to unload." Wasteful spending huh, I wonder if she will trim the farm bill that millionaire farmers have? GOP hates social program, but they love that one. What a joke and hypocrite!!!!

Hey libs, put on your big-boy pants. There's nothing wrong with firearm ownership. I'll bet more crimes have been committed using guns by those who voted (or support) Obama than those who voted For McCain and Romney. Most gun owners are responsible...Obama voters, not so much.

Hey Dean, just who exactly said anything was wrong with firearm ownership and referenced crime in these comments? The image of the gun and having her "sights on Obamacare" sounds like she is advocating getting rid of the ACA by violent means. Just another GOP/Teapartier trying to play to the base in a primary.

Perhaps that will appeal to some people, but I wouldn't be impressed with much of that. Women who act like men, don't appeal to me, all that much.

I would want to hear how she would make government better, myself. Lord knows........we could really use some better government about now. The Dems are doing their best, to establish a dictatorship in America.

"Hey libs, put on your big-boy pants. There's nothing wrong with firearm ownership."

Nobody said there was and you're deliberately mischaracterizing the issue with your straw man. What's wrong is the idea that firearms are an appropriate or legitimate way of expressing political disagreement, frustration, etc. Go ahead and try your "Second Amendment remedies" though...see where it gets you. Dare ya.

  20. ThinkAgain: Don't like Congress? Get rid of the repub/tea bag majority.

By this ad's reasoning, if someone doesn't like this candidate because she doesn't like Obamacare, they should shoot her – right?
