(CNN) - A federal judge has ordered Michigan officials to place U.S. Rep. John Conyers back on the state's primary ballot.
State election officials had said the Democratic lawmaker had fallen short of requirements to make the ballot because two people collecting signatures for him were not registered voters, as required by state law.
Conyers, 85, has served in Congress since the mid 1960s, and was planning to seek reelection as a write-in candidate, if his ballot appeal was denied.
The primary is August 5.
The district court order handed down on Friday concluded that Conyers had enough valid signatures to qualify for inclusion on the ballot.
Conyers is the second-most senior member of the House behind Rep. John Dingell, also from Michigan, who announced earlier this year he would retire after serving 58 years.

That's how it works.......the black man gets pass, when he fails to meet requirements, but if the candidate was white, he would NOT!
Congratulations to Judge Matthew Leitman for allowing this crook to work his bankruptcy on the people of Michigan once again! Conyers has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. He's all for religious freedom, but Islam needs extra protection. His staff was forced to chaffeur and baby sit, and he admitted responsibility for ehtics violations. There's more, but it's not any better. The only good news about this man is that he's 85 years old and is probably at the end of his personal reign of corruption. When a federal judge slips up like this, we need terms on judicial service. No excuse to ignore the laws we have in place for partisan gain. Puke.
How many times can a single voter vote for Conyers... especially if no ID is required?
A corrupt politician goes judge shopping. What else is new.

I am neither Democrate nor Republican. Secretary of State of MI is hard core Republican. She is trying to take advantage of a loop hole. In last several years Republicans have acted against the interest of Average American. Look at Republicans record in Congress. Besides saying "NO" what work they have done. In US everyone gets paid for the WORK DONE. Why should there be exception for these people. – RK
So don't follow the rules and cry about it till you get your way. Sounds like a liberal
Laws are only for working folks...this clown seems to think he is above the law.
It seems that the old crook may have another chance to flim-flam the government for another 2 years. An Obama appointed judge decided to ignore the requirements on the books, for him to be placed on the ballot. Stay tuned.
I agree with the judge. Fifty years of stealing is not enough. After all he is only 85 and has been getting away with it all this time. I think this is what you call the "Grandfather Clause". .
I see the law doesn't apply to everyone what a joke this country is.
The judge was nominated by Obama in 2013 and he just took his place on the bench March 14th 2014 – 2 months ago.
Guess it is time for a thank you Obama.......................
Leitman is a newly appointed Federal Judge by Obama... Enough said..
Corrupt protection of his masters... The Chicago way, own all of the Judges...
If the state 'election officials' claimed he didn't have enough signatures to be on the ballot and the judge in the district court says he does... then the 'election officials' must either be wrong or been over-ruled by the district court, as is in their power to do so! If the court has the power to over-rule the 'election officials'... then everyone can just shut up and get over it. If they don't like the district court's ruling, then they should appeal to a higher court. That's the way our government works.
This is a perfect example of the Federal government overstepping it's powers. If the State of Michigan has their law on the books, then the Fed. should respect it. Waste of taxpayer money in the end, and just flat out crooked establishment politics. Seriously, 85 years old, the man probalby is nothing more than a puppet for the powers to be in D.C. He should be home with his family.
It's now up to the voters of Michigan to demonstrate the value of laws and regulations mean to the democratic process. "Don't follow the rules; go home"..... that goes for politicians as well as immigrants.
Party be dmnd -I will ALWAYS vote against unethical behavior--I've seen more of it from the establishment party (dems) than I have from those conservative types-
in 10 years -who knows? for now-I am anti democrat--I've had to listen to things like "male ,pale, and stale" while those on the "left" thought that it was cute and funny–I see the bigotry-I've seen how joyful some get when they talk about the birth rates of non-whites and get that magical little thrill about it–as if non-white=Kumbaya-good luck with that........
Any politician in office for more than 10 years is corrupt and shouldn't be there anyway. Anybody who has been a politician in D.C. for more than 30 years should be considered useless and not allowed back in D.C.
It seems that the "letter of the law" only applies to "some" of our Representatives, and not others.
Laws? We don't need no stinking laws.
