Biden: U.S. 'behind' on caring for veterans

(CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden said the United States needs to "get to the bottom" of the problems rocking the Department of Veterans Affairs at a Memorial Day event Monday.

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki and the Obama administration have come under fire over reports of excessively long waits for medical care for veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

White House outs CIA official by mistake

(CNN) - The White House accidentally revealed the name of the CIA's top intelligence official in Afghanistan to some 6,000 journalists.

The identity was on a list of people attending a military briefing for President Barack Obama during his surprise visit to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan on Sunday.

Vets groups blast GOP senator who accused them of defending the status quo

(CNN) - Major veterans’ groups this Memorial Day weekend harshly criticized the top Republican on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee after he charged that the leaders of the service organizations are too cozy with embattled VA Secretary Eric Shinseki and won’t call for him to resign despite allegations of mismanagement and wrongdoing in his department.

Sen. Richard Burr accused them of being “more interested in their own livelihoods and Washington connections than they are to the needs of their own members.”

(CNN) - Be wary of every microphone.

That was Vice President Joe Biden's advice Monday to a crowd at the kickoff for the Road 2 Recovery Memorial Challenge - where 200 cyclists, including injured veterans, ride 325 miles from Washington to Virginia Beach.

Conservatives float alternative to Boehner

Washington (CNN) – Some conservatives unhappy with House Speaker John Boehner's leadership are looking for a replacement, and recent moves by Texas Republican Jeb Hensarling are fueling speculation he wants Boehner's job in the next Congress.

Hensarling, who was part of Boehner's leadership team two years ago but left to chair the House Financial Services Committee, gave an expansive speech last week hosted by Heritage Action for America, a group that frequently and publicly clashes with Boehner.

Hagel on VA scandal: 'It makes me sick to my stomach'

(CNN) - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told Jake Tapper that the scandal surrounding the VA involving delayed care for several veterans in need is upsetting.

"It makes me sick to my stomach," Hagel said. "Because it is a clear responsibility we have as a country, as a people, to take care of these men and women and their families who sacrificed so much."
