After California shooting, House Democrats to push for gun control measures

Washington (CNN) - After a mass shooting in California on Friday, House Democrats plan to press for action on gun control measures this week.

The no. 2 House Democrat told reporters that he and other Democrats are discussing whether to push for an amendment to a spending bill that would beef up background checks for those purchasing guns.

"It is possible," Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, said Wednesday. But, he admitted, Democrats are not sure the background check language will be allowed on a spending bill the House is considering.

Competing mental health bills set up partisan showdown

The House will begin debate on Wednesday on a bill that funds several federal agencies for the next fiscal year, including the Justice Department. The measure currently includes a provision that bans the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from requiring gun sellers to report multiple sales of specific types of assault weapons. Hoyer said Democrats will attempt to strike that measure.

But Hoyer, who said he hoped Congress could do something, conceded these new efforts on the spending bill aren't likely to go far.

"I continue not to have high expectations because of past performance," Hoyer said.

The Maryland Democrat also said that the background check measure Democrats have pushed unsuccessfully before "may not have made a difference" in the case of the Friday’s California shooting.

Citing public opinion polls, Hoyer maintained that a majority of Americans back tougher background check measures, but if voters want to see them enacted into law they need to elect more Democrats to Congress.

Why this almost NEVER happens!!! Nope, nothing like playing politics with the deaths of innocent people. California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Democrats think they can legislate away mental illness by destroying the Second Amendment.

More Democrats in Congress only invites disaster. The same with the White House.

Any gun owner that would vote for a Democrat is totally insane. Their ultimate goal is to get rid of the Second Amendment and ban guns. Ex-Justice Stephens has said as much with his proposed alteration of the Second Amendment. They would leave you totally defenseless and at the mercy of one of the largest Democrat Party benefactors, criminals.

You can't fix stupid or crazy it is that simple. The man was crazy but becasue a court had never made that determination he was allowed to buy guns. You cannot stop crazy.

Here we go again, let`s blame everyone but the person who did the killings (which three were killed with a knife). None of laws being proposed would change the outcome in the recent mass shootings, so why pass them. We have a violence problem in the US and liberals act like making more gun laws will stop it. History has proven that more the laws haven`t changed a thing (great example the AWB=total failure).

That goes for the NRA's good guys with guns mythology too. Good guys with guns didn't stop him. And before this, he was a good guy with a gun in the NRA's definition. True crazy will not be stopped by gun laws or more guns. Gun laws will help the day to day accidents and other gun deaths.

    @ Hello pilot
You have written that you can not stop crazy! What about stopping that someone who is crazy to obtain firearms and ammunitions. This is what is all about. If that crazy had a one knife or more, he couldn't had killed more than two people without being apprehended. We have to make sure those crazy people not able to obtain those firearms and ammunitions so easily. This is what we are crying for and asking those who we put in power to action.

Sorry dude your son is dead but if ANY politician dares to even utter gun control, they're out of there. If the sight of 20 dead 6 year olds didn't do it nothing will. The gun manufacturers must remain in the 1%. That's the most important thing in this country. Keep the populace uneducated and well armed!

  11. Mass?

Mass shooting? 6 people died and 3 of them were stabbed to death. This is a horrific act but 3 innocent lives were taken with a knife before the guns were used. Are we going to do background checks on knife buyers? This is a mental health issue, not a gun issue. Watch the videos that kid made and you will see he needed some serious mental help that he didn't get.

" If the sight of 20 dead 6 year olds didn't do it nothing will."

The same number of children die to gun violence every 3 days.

When it comes to guns, the country jumped head first through the looking glass long, long ago.

@Lily-He killed three women with a knife and three with a gun. Tell me what gun law would have saved those three women that were killed with a knife? As a matter of fact tell me gun law would have saved the gunshot victims?

So this is what your saying , If your suffering from mental illness and love your guns , vote republican ?

Republicans believe freedom is achieved only with a gun .

Democrats believe true freedom comes with nonviolence .

Republicans need to think beyond , to when the shooting stops .

What about those three people that were stabbed to death? Why aren't the law makers talking about knife control laws? He also ran over people with his car. Shouldn't we declare the sidewalks "car free zone" to stop this from happening again?

If the law makers really want to stop this type of violence in the future, start with the broken mental health system.

So let me see if I'm interpreting this correctly:
In America, on American soil, innocent people, living their day to day lives, should just be expected to "deal with" the fact that at any given moment, someone may open fire around them, or in a place where their loved ones are in a domestic terror attack. Nothing should be done. No one should be held accountable. Peoples right to owns guns trumps the lives of innocent children.

Meanwhile, in the country of Libya, in the city of Benghazi, Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty, all of whom understood the risks of their jobs and the Embassy they were stationed at, were killed in an overseas terrorist attack, and the American people have been forced to pay millions for 13 public hearings that haven't turned up anything new in 11 months.

So, to review: Republicans care more about "finding justice" for four Americans who were killed overseas, who had full knowledge that they had dangerous jobs, than they do about "finding justice" for the thousands of American families who lose their lives, or the lives of loved ones, to a person who was able to get his/her hands on a gun far too easily.

Remember this when going into the booths this November.

At some point, states that tighten gun laws will begin accepting responsibility for law breakers who are allowed to kill because the state either did not or could not enforce its own laws. The sign on the side of a Denver police car, "To Protect and Serve" is ludicrous with respect to stopping illegal gun traffic, where a majority of the firearms used in crimes come from. Passing a new law will do nothing if it is not enforced, and if it is enforced, it seems only the law abiding citizens will recognize it.
