After California shooting, House Democrats to push for gun control measures

Washington (CNN) - After a mass shooting in California on Friday, House Democrats plan to press for action on gun control measures this week.

The no. 2 House Democrat told reporters that he and other Democrats are discussing whether to push for an amendment to a spending bill that would beef up background checks for those purchasing guns.

"It is possible," Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, said Wednesday. But, he admitted, Democrats are not sure the background check language will be allowed on a spending bill the House is considering.

Competing mental health bills set up partisan showdown

The House will begin debate on Wednesday on a bill that funds several federal agencies for the next fiscal year, including the Justice Department. The measure currently includes a provision that bans the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from requiring gun sellers to report multiple sales of specific types of assault weapons. Hoyer said Democrats will attempt to strike that measure.

But Hoyer, who said he hoped Congress could do something, conceded these new efforts on the spending bill aren't likely to go far.

"I continue not to have high expectations because of past performance," Hoyer said.

The Maryland Democrat also said that the background check measure Democrats have pushed unsuccessfully before "may not have made a difference" in the case of the Friday’s California shooting.

Citing public opinion polls, Hoyer maintained that a majority of Americans back tougher background check measures, but if voters want to see them enacted into law they need to elect more Democrats to Congress.

That crazy little boy using a knife was by the way. He knew it, I do, you do, that killing people as quickly and easy as you can is not using a knife, otherwise he couldn't apply the firearm as well. What I am asking is to put laws which doesn't allow anyone who is below 30 years old and has nothing to protect, to match so easily to any shop and buy firearms or ammunition so easily. What was those people who sold him these stuff thinking? If it is not only making money and not thinking how these firearms will be used, or just only making profits, what is it???????

Carlos you don't want to know how many could be killed, and the gop will look the other way, the money from NRA is just to important. No amount of killings will motivate the gop, even if it were their own, sad, it really is.

How about a politician or the press calling out all the people that knew this kid.......saw his videos and heard his rants........and did nothing or called noone? A tragedy yes but one avoidable nit by more laws but by people that knew him recognizing he was becoming a threT to people.

Better include knives and explosive devices while their at it if we are going to try and stop crazy people for killing us. That would take us one step closer to the end game for the far left fanatics micromanagement of our lives.

The liberals on here are doing the exact same thing they complained about last week with Benghazi and fundraising. You are trying to leverage the deaths of 6 people for your cause. The fact is that no laws that are being proposed come close to the restrictions that California already has in place. And you talk about trying to prevent future mass shootings yet Sandy Hook, the navy shipyard shooter, the man who shot Gabbi Giffords, the Virginia Tech shooter, Columbine, the theatre shooting in Colorado...none of them unfortunately would have been prevented by any new law being proposed. You are just trying to do something to make you feel like you are doing something because the cold hard truth is that none of these would have been stopped. The question is, how many have been prevented from the current laws? I have a feeling that number is very high but I freely acknowledge that there is probably no way to obtain what that number is.

Something has to be done because those that are (or have) committed crimes and those that have some mental problems need to be stripped of their weapons. We need to make it easier for prosecutors to convict on weapons charges. If they could, more of the weapons used in crimes and those that commit those crimes would be locked away.

"half of the victims were killed with a knife.... A KNIFE!!!"

So what? What does that change about the FACT that over 2/3 of murders in the country are committed with guns?

The truth is that no amount of gun laws will stop a demented Democrat from committing a mass murder.
Check it out. ALL of the mass murders were committed by Democrats.

@Lily – You're implying someone under 30 has no right to "protect" their own life. Moronic thinking.

@t Cruzin – I know many liberals who own guns, moron.

@The real truth. Keep preaching that liberal diatribe. I'm sure it makes you feel better. Meanwhile in the real word, people in states with the most restrictive gun control laws are still killing at an incredible rate. Crazy people will always find a way to kill. Cowards will always look for the easiest way to kill. Even if it means using a homemade bomb like Tim Mcvay (sp?).

Good. If there is one thing we DON'T need to fund, it's Eric Holder's justice department. This killer passed 3 federal background checks, one for each gun he purchased in CA. So, obviously the stupid Democrats don't know their butskies from a hole in the ground!

Why wasn't something done? In California, with the toughest gun laws in America and where they have police squads who do nothing but confiscate guns from people (including whole families) who aren't eligible to have them any more? Gee, crying dad, you'll have to ask them why they didn't do their jobs!

How about addressing mental health and getting a database established that will simply identify disqualified gun owners. The list of perpetrators with serious mental health issues is very, very long. Prior to 1980, we did not have this problem because we used mental hospitals. Leave the guns alone and address the real problem: people with serious mental illnesses.

Libs ask why can't we have an intelligent conversation about guns . . .. The answer is in this blog. California has the most severe gun restrictions in the country, in fact every "common sense" restriction that has been part of the national debate exists in CA – that means you have already infringed on 32 million American's gun rights, and accomplished absolutely nothing. But still the same pleading for more gun laws and more gun laws – what libs truly want is nothing less than confiscation and a complete ban. Unacceptable. The 2nd Amendment is the basis for true freedom in this country, without the ability of the people to stand up to the government every other right in the Bill of Rights are just words that will be trampled at the first opportunity.
