Washington (CNN) - A grimacing President Barack Obama, photographed at his hotel gym in Poland lifting free weights and working out on an elliptical, wasn’t in any danger from the sneaky photographer, the Secret Service said Wednesday.
An official with the agency said pictures and video of Obama working out at the Marriott Hotel Warsaw did not constitute a security breach, since all people entering and exiting his hotel would have been screened for potentially dangerous items.
Obama was in Poland marking the 25th anniversary of the Solidarity movement and meeting with Ukraine’s newly elected president.
Overnight Wednesday, photographs and a video emerged on a Polish tabloid that showed the commander-in-chief lifting weights, doing squats, and using an elliptical machine. In the images his face contorts as he exerts from his workout.
When Obama works out in hotels on the road, it's considered an off-the-record movement - akin to the President going out to dinner or visiting his daughters' school.
The Secret Service doesn't typically ask other guests to vacate hotel gyms ahead of the President's arrival, given the security screening that everyone in the hotel undergoes. And they say they do not typically ask hotel guests to refrain from photographing the President, either.
Indeed, an official with the service says it was apparent there were photos being taken of Obama working out in Warsaw - but no one asked for fellow gym-goers to stop taking them.
Secret Service agents were in close proximity to Obama during his workout, the official noted.
In the images, it’s clear that Obama is working out alongside other people in the gym, though only their legs appear in the photographs.
