Rubio: Bergdahl swap puts Americans in danger

(CNN) – Marco Rubio on Wednesday added his voice to GOP-fueled criticism over the U.S. decision to swap five terror detainees for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

Rubio told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that President Barack Obama, by authorizing the swap, has endangered “countless American men and women in uniform across the globe."

Appearing on “The Situation Room,” Rubio said the exchange creates an "incentive" for militants abroad to snatch Americans with the hopes of trading for terror captives.

Official: Army will review freed soldier Bergdahl's case – but it's not first priority

He also said the decision ”will lead to five terrorist members of the Taliban returning to the battlefield to kill Americans” – echoing the language of a number of Republicans critical of the trade.

The five Taliban detainees were transferred from the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility to Qatar, which brokered the deal.

Rubio, slamming President Barack Obama's foreign policy is nothing new. The Republican senator from Florida and potential 2016 presidential candidate has consistently blamed Obama's policies abroad as the catalyst of America's slipping status in the world.

Rubio, a member of the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees, adds another high-profile voice to a growing chorus demanding more explanation on the White House’s decision.

Democrats, specifically Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, however are charging that Republicans are merely playing politics with the logistics of the negotiation.

Inconsistencies from both sides in Bergdahl release

After a closed-door briefing Wednesday night, Rubio said the classified session shed little light on the situation.

“I remain as deeply skeptical about this as I did before this conversation that we just had with the administration. For two days now, we've asked questions, many of which have not yet been fully answered,” he said.

Republicans and Democrats have said this week that the administration long ago promised to consult Congress before negotiating a prisoner swap, but said they hadn’t heard anything more about it until the deal was done.

Hey Marco. How about enlisting into the military and protect us from the Taliban. You are so patriotic concerned about the rest of us. No? Then shut up about the big boys in the room who really do understand foreign policy!

All this nonsense from Rubio "has endangered COUNTLESS American men and women in uniform accross the globe" and others saying similar then:
With respect to him and everyone else it is the "declared war on terror" that is and will remain and will continue to endanger many American men and women in uniforms lives. By the time they get to Afghanistan more than 1 year away their influence on the death of any American will fall as the troop withdrawal will be almost complete and if necessary the Afghan army must fight the Taliban.
If his special forces colleagues thought he was a deserter (Unproved) can all concerned stop the speculation and the media and politicians trial without facts or definitive proof either way.
American military anywhere they face the Taliban or al Qaeda or al Qaeda offshoots are already exposed to being Wounded killed or captured.
But I forgot Obama is a very weak leader or lacks leadership!? He is CIC and has a stated policy of closing GITMO and other detainees have already been sent home... without this furore. Killing OBL and this is like it or not leadership and presidential and CIC prerogative.
You think if asked the house for permission especially they would have said yes when they have consistently said no to him on anything and everything Daddy daddy you did not tell me you' d take my football away if I did not give tommy his football cards back. Some things have to be done in absolute secrecy in war!!

The release of terrorists for an American could put Americans living or traveling abroad in harm's way as well as American military personnel.

the Reagan administration’s talks with Iran aimed at winning the release of U.S. hostages held in Lebanon. in the Iran case, the United States was negotiating with a sovereign government. So it was OK.

How about in 2007, when the U.S. negotiated with Sunni insurgent leaders in Iraq to get them to stop bombing U.S. troops and join the fight against al-Qaeda in Iraq? We bribed them. We paid them off. And if you Google the statements of various U.S. officials back in 2005-2006, they were insulted when the U.S. media referred to the Sunnis as insurgents. No, those officials insisted, they’re terrorists!

As the right-wing echo chamber ramps up about how horrible it is that five Guantanamo Bay detainees have been freed, let’s remember that 520 Gitmo detainees were released under George W. Bush.

Bush gave $43 million to Taliban 4 months before 9/11

The Bush administration gave this money to the Taliban with the full knowledge that Osama Bin Laden was in Afghanistan operating his Al Qaeda terror network. To make matters worse Bin Laden had already launched the 1998 attacks on our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which left 225 people dead and injured more than 4,000. If that wasn't bad enough Bin Laden had also ordered the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole which left 17 sailors dead along with another 39 injured. Had Bush forgotten that President Clinton had bombed Bin Ladens terrorist camps in Afghanistan in retaliation for these attacks ? The Bush administration also conveniently ignored the fact that the Taliban brutally oppressed the female population of Afghanistan. The Taliban also tortured and executed it's opponents and required religious minorities to wear clothing that marked them as non Muslims which was similar to what the NAZI's had done to the Jews , Gypsies, and Gays.

In the end it turned out that the Taliban had fooled the Bush administration because instead of banning Opium in reality the Taliban had actually increased the production of opium.

  18. Joe from CT, not Lieberman

One thing all of these "experts" forget – America has been paying ransom and negotiating with terrorists since the founding of our country. We regularly paid "tribute" (ransom, bribe, etc.) to the Barbary Pirates until our Navy was strong enough to take them on. We paid the French to not invade us by "buying" the Mississippi/Missouri Watershed (i.e. Louisiana Purchase). In more recent history, we negotiated with the Iranian revolutionaries (declared as terrorists by Congress) to have them illegally buy weapons from us to pay for the operation to sell weapons to the Nicaraguan Contras. Just because a guy who couldn't pronounce the word "NUCLEAR" said "we don't negotiate with terrorists" did not mean we didn't.

Well, Rubio. I did TRY to look under my bed for the naughty terrorists who want nothing more than to harm me, but between you and me ... I felt a bit silly.

As for the rest of your "be afraid ... be very, very afraid" ?

Yeah. I'm going to give it a pass ... and move on with living out the rest of my life.

It is all ANY of us can do after spending 13 years conditioning ourselves to war, death, destruction (well two wars actually).
