Perry sticks by alcoholism and homosexuality comparison

(CNN) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry stood by his recent comments comparing homosexuality to alcoholism.

Appearing on CNN's "Crossfire" on Wednesday, Perry was asked by co-host Stephanie Cutter whether he believes homosexuality is a disease.

"I think my position has been fairly clear on that for a substantial period of time," Perry said, pivoting quickly to the economy as a more pressing issue facing the United States.

Christie: Perry is 'wrong' on homosexuality-alcoholism comparison

The focus should be on American jobs, Perry said, "and that is not on these social issues.”

"I think the social issues should be decided state-by-state rather than being something in Washington, D.C. to try to make one-size-fits-all."

At a speech last week in San Francisco, the longtime Republican governor - who ran for the White House in 2012 and is considering another bid in 2016 - was asked whether he thought homosexuality was a disorder.

"I may have the genetic coding that I'm inclined to be an alcoholic, but I have the desire not to do that - and I look at the homosexual issue the same way," Perry said during that event, immediately sparking backlash from Democrats and gay rights organizations.

Asked repeatedly Wednesday on CNN about the controversial comparison, Perry did not elaborate further on his views on homosexuality.

"I got asked a question and I responded the way that I have before,” he said.

Another example of how republicans are out of touch and are being left behind because of ignorance on social issues.

How could this comparison be justified? Is he really saying that being a homosexual is a disease? How is this acceptable is that?

It's easy for a politician to evade being questioned about a topic, bringing in other stuff than answering a simple question.

Please, please, please run for President! We could use the laughs. Except that Rick Perry is a really bad joke.

Governor Perry is remarkably stupid. Does any reasonable person believe that Perry knows NEARLY enough about the physiological forces behind alcoholism or about the possible (inherited?) differences between the blood/brain chemistry of a homosexual versus a heterosexual?

Both stunning and frightening that the talk radio crowd believes anything the guy says. Perry could say that global warming is a result of too many fire ants digging holes north of the Rio Grande, and many of his followers would blindly listen.

It's the conservative strategy ... separate yourself from the liberals as much as possible by being the single biggest dooooosh in the conversation.

Perry's analogy of homosexuality to a pre-disposition to alcoholism is correct in that both of those things are something you are born with.

Perry's analysis failed, however, when he suggested that homosexuals should choose not to engage in homosexual acts. That is no more natural or sensical than asking heterosexuals to refrain from heterosexual acts.

Mr. Perry may have the "genetic coding" ? to have an IQ of greater than 60, but he seems to have the desire to not utilize that.

The biggest problem in the gay community is those that are ignorant regarding gay issues, but attempt to look knowledgeable due to their political, financial, or economical status.
