Billionaire activist to meet with White House officials

Washington (CNN) – Tom Steyer, the billionaire environmentalist who’s pledged to spend millions in this year’s midterm contests, will discuss climate change with top White House officials and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew this week, according to officials.

At the Wednesday meeting, Steyer will also sit down with former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulsen and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros to confer on a forthcoming report assessing the economic effects of climate change.

The Steyer-funded outside advocacy group, NextGen Climate, pledged in May to spend $100 million in midterm election races to go after so-called “science deniers” who reject claims humans are responsible for global warming and climate change.

Steyer has set himself up as the chief adversary to the Koch brothers, the billionaire industrialists who fund a web of conservative groups. He's a fierce opponent of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which is still under consideration by the Obama administration.

Last week President Barack Obama went after Republicans who deny man made climate change, saying they posed a “serious threat” the country’s future and comparing their claims to suggesting the moon is made of cheese.

The White House embarked upon a major environment effort starting in early June, when Obama unveiled proposed new restrictions on coal plants. This week other members of his administration will discuss the effects of climate change that scientists say are already being seen, including extreme weather.

The President himself will address the issue Wednesday at the League of Conservation Voters’ annual dinner in Washington.

Just like Scott, get down on the left for money coming in, he wants just the gop to have big donors, boo hoo! Grow a pair son, life's a heck of a lot better when you have principles, feeding the rich on hopes of scraps, no thanks. I get paid well, or I go some place that will.

It's how you spend your money and how you use the money. Saving our one an only planet is a-okay is me.

Did his company skirt regulations, and end up poisoning an entire regions drinking water, only to find out the Koch's spent money having their lobbyists fight the very regulation that covered this, and with that regulation this problem would have easily been contained, yup they can't afford all these senseless regulations, more BS, your without even the slightest of clues.

Hahahahahahahaha. Dude made all his money as an evil investment banker in the coal industry. I'm sure he is altruistic in his efforts. Oh wait, he stands to make a lot of money off his investments in alternative energy??? He's doing it for "saving the earth" reasons. seriously. Too too funny (even for you, Marie)

@Marie-Did you read the article. Steyer is going to spend 100 million on the 2014 mid-terms elections. You cry about the Koch`s buying elections well Steyer is doing the same.

"This week other members of his administration will discuss the effects of climate change that scientists say are already being seen, including extreme weather."

Does sub-zero temperatures for months on end count as "extreme"? The good news: we are finally experiencing rather comfortable temperatures in Minnesota (minus too much rainfall flooding in certain areas). The bad news: winter is right around the corner. Brrr.

The difference between liberal and conservative donors: Transparency vs. shady dealing and hidden agendas.

Liberal rich donors support the environment (for example) and they donate to help the environment.

Conservative donors attempt to buy elections through secret donations to phony grassroots organizations through shell companies and attempt to shift actual voting patterns to buy politicians.

The difference is honesty. Steyer is for the environment and is trying to expose the deniers. You might not like that but he is right out there.

Koch's on the other hand hide a lot of their donations through such things as Tea Party and other "patriot" groups that pretend to be some kind of grass roots movement but in fact puts a face on the Koch money. They are hiding this because their goal has nothing to do with politics. They want regulations out of the way to make more money. I would hide that too if I was that kind of person.

it seems like the repos are upset because for once we have someone on the left to put up against the Koch brothers. My oh my . Sounds like sour grapes to me. Typical repo attitude. Trouble is you nuts don't believe in climate change and will look really stupid down the road. Vote all the party of no out midterm. Let's move forward.

Thye right wing scotus made this possible... so does it really matter if a billionaire is right or left? At least this guy isn't hiding his contributions befind 'grass roots' tea bagger groups who want to cut taxes for the people who are financing them. So what if this guy stands to make a lot of money off alternatives... at least it is a start to keep our planet from dying. The koch's just want mo' money, mo' money, mo' money... if we ALL die in their pursuit of it...
Well. I'm sure that will be Obama's fault.

Well then sway away. This anti-science movement has gone far enough in this country and is promoting a dumbing down of our citizens. How are we going to seriously complete in the future with Creationism, climate-deniers, history-changers, anti-vaccination-ists and general ignorance of logical thought process?

Maybe in the future we can beg the Japanese to send us some robots to fix our broken machines made in China.
