Oversight Chair Darrell Issa subpoenas 28 years of records

Washington (CNN) - Expanding his IRS investigation by more than two decades, House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa, R-California, has sent a subpoena to the Federal Elections Commission for all communications involving former IRS administrator Lois Lerner from January 1, 1986 to the present day.

This new search is the broadest-yet for records in a year-long investigation by Issa and congressional Republicans, who are trying to assess why the agency targeted tea party and other political groups for extra scrutiny.

Issa issued the subpoena to Lee Goodman, head of the Federal Election Commission, on Tuesday for communications involving Lerner, who is seen as a central figure in the controversy because she ran the division that executed the targeting.

She resigned last year after the Treasury Department’s inspector general found those working under her used “inappropriate” criteria to scrutinize certain groups. Since then, Lerner has refused to testify before Congress, invoking her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This has added to the Republican push to find any documents related to Lerner and her time in government.

In the on-going, determined GOP effort, Republicans are now reaching back to her career before the IRS.

Lerner joined the FEC in 1981, first working in the general counsel’s office. Issa subpoena focuses on her work after 1986, when Lerner became the head of the FEC’s enforcement division.

CNN obtained a copy of FEC subpoena from the Democratic staff of the Oversight Committee, who said that it was issued unilaterally by the Republican chairman.

Issa’s office has not yet responded to CNN’s questions and request for comment.

The subpoena asks for all communications sent to or received from Lerner in those twenty-some years and specifically mentions e-mails, which of course did not exist for much of that time.

Issa has given the FEC until July 7 to produce the 28 years’ worth of documents.

The FEC declined to comment on the subpoena.

Issa is asking for emails before email was invented?
I suppose next he will ask for emails sent in the future or sent from other planets or sent by Elvis.
I mean if you are going to violate space and time for political fodder....
Hey wait – that will fit in great with the tin foil hat crowd. Area 51, Illuminati etc. It all works I guess.
And my taxes are paying for it? Way to reduce government spending conservatives!

28 years of records? Oh no...this isn't a witchhunt at all...hahahahahahahaha....what a freekin joke. You know, you really need to stop worshipping ignorance and get yourselves some smart people, GOPers/Teatrolls. You had such a great opportunity to whine and feign outrage with the "OMG, your dog ate your emails?!?!?!?!!" line of attack, which would have allowed you to keep the nontroversy going without proving any of your accusations to even be true...and yet now, with this blatantly excessive, overreaching, subpoena clearly intended as nothing more than harassment and a political stunt, you just handed Obama and the Dems the "witchhunt" argument in spades. Are your strategists really that freekin stupid?

"who are trying to assess why the agency targeted tea party and other political groups for extra scrutiny."

No they're not. They know why these groups were scrutinized and they're fully aware of the rules about political activity that apply to 501(c)(4) organizations if they wish to maintain tax exempt status. They're not trying to "assess" anything, least of all "why" it occurred. No no. Rather, they trying to "prove" their accusations that it was done for reasons other than the 501(c)(4) rules about political activity AND that somehow Obama was directly ordering it all to take place. They've yet to find a shred of evidence, so they've decided to try to cobble together some weird, strained narrative based on a patchwork of cherry picked information from Lois Lerner's entire 30 year career at the IRS. It's complete nonsense. No judge would enforce a subpoena like this, aimed at clearly irrelevant documents, etc. It's a farce.

"...who are trying to assess why the agency targeted tea party and other political groups for extra scrutiny." Asked and freaking answered. They had the guy, the actual guy, who first said "bring me more like these" and started the keyword searches testify before congress and explain that they were trying to identify political themed groups. There is no mystery here....none.

  7. Wake Up People! Many Rivers to cross.....

Maybe President Obama and Lois Lerner have been working together to bring down the GOP, since 1986?! It makes sense, after all he or someone working for him conspired to get him phony birth certificates and birth announcements.

    FIFY

Since we're going back to 86, I wonder what Issa was doing back then?
Carry on GOP, you're bound to find those 🐘🐘 in the 🍓🍓 patches real soon.

  8. The Republican Party Is Dead To Me

Another (so called) conservative, wasting money right and left for political folly. If this were a democrat, doing the same things as this moron, the right would be screaming like they'd just got a body part caught in a stump grinder. Give it a rest. The squawking from you right wingers is getting so anticipated, it's losing it's effectiveness. Yea! Like it ever was effective to begin with.

It sounds like going back to 1986 will help find out something .

Ted Cruz will help get to the bottom .

    Oh my...

So an investigation into a non-scandal which is supposed to derive from a tax exempted status created by the Supreme Court Citizens United decision in Jan 2010, now goes back 28 years!?!?!

"This new search is the broadest-yet for records in a year-long investigation by Issa and congressional Republicans, who are trying to assess why the agency targeted tea party and other political groups for extra scrutiny."

Funny how the news media never mentions that those other "groups" were liberal ones that were only targeted less because there were way fewer applying for tax except status. Ironically the only group DENIED the status after being delayed was a PROGRESSIVE one. Also its really easy to answer their main question:

THEY TARGETED POLITICAL GROUPS BECAUSE POLITICAL GROUPS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING TAX EXEMPT STATUS. ONLY SOCIAL INTEREST GROUPS . THE IRS WERE DOING THEIR JOB MAKING SURE THEY WEREN'T PARTISAN!!! The only problem was that by doing their job they were singling out and "unfairly" treating organizations over others without political buzzword names like Progressive and Tea Party, which is unconstitutional. When was the last time a Tea Party group supported a Democrat? When was the last time a Progressive group supported a Republican? How on Earth are these groups getting approval?

Funny what happens when you make garbage decision like money=free speech etc. without considering how this plays out in reality for people trying to enforce/enact said laws/decisions.

Issa is making an absolutely ridiculous request for the FEC to produce 28 years of email records which will require locating and searching multiple email backups for Lerner's correspondence within seven business days simply so he can hold a hearing excoriating the FEC for failing to comply with his bogus subpoena.

I wonder if we can investigate Issa back to 1986, to see if there is a pattern of meaningless and vindictive behavior. Maybe we should put Gundy onto that, so Gundy can discover what hard work and the truth looks like. Of course he has to get permission from his Nanny, no?

What the hell is he looking for besides twenty eight years of nothing. This man is way out of control and needs to be taken off that chair he's been using as some sort of political king-pin advantage. This really WAS a witch-hunt from the get-go.

John Boehner is suing the current President of the United States for having the good fortune to be elected as President of the United States, and Darrel Issa is using his chairmanship to attack a women's career prior to her having advanced to the position she advanced to due in part to the support of her nomination that the previous sitting President of the United States had extended to her. It is time the American people sue Boehner and Issa for falsehoods being offered to the American people under the guise of their political careers extended to THEM by the voting public.

Let's face it once it's in Eform it's never deleted from the internet UNLESS someone is actually trying to scrub a certain issue but in this case that would be obstruction of justice. The cover-up must be nothing compared to the actual Emails in question.

"We have seen a lot of unbelievable things in this investigation, but the fact that Lois Lerner attempted to initiate an apparently baseless IRS examination against a sitting Republican United States senator is shocking," Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said. "At every turn, Lerner was using the IRS as a tool for political purposes in defiance of taxpayer rights."

Oh, my bad, his only constituents are a handful of folks like the Koch brothers who can't stand President Obama working for the good of ALL Americans and not just those at the top of the economic food chain.

Never in the history of the United States have you seen such hatred of a President, Darrell Issa, McConnell, Boehner, McCain, Graham and the rest of GOP are spending tax payer's money to bring down this President in all kinds of schemes and lawsuits. This is shameful they just want to make a connection to the White House.

Since he caught the terrorist they are now quiet about Benghazi for now and its back to the IRS where were they when the NAACP was targeted?

The American people need to sue the Congress and the rest for not doing their job they had better take notice of what happened in Mississippi we are tired of this disrespect to the President.

CNN you are pathetic. The fact you have to dig his deep to find this story on your site is sickening. I cannot even find a relevant story on the fact that Lerner was just found targeting a GOP senator.
