Obama to request billions to deal with border crisis

(CNN) - President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Monday for emergency funds, possibly more than $2 billion, as the United States grapples with a surge of undocumented children and adults crossing the border from Mexico.

A White House official told CNN the money will go to securing appropriate space for the detention of children but also stemming the tide of immigrants. The government hopes to increase its ability to investigate and dismantle smuggling organizations as well as quickly return children and adults to their home countries if they do not qualify for asylum.

Little-known law allows abused immigrant children to stay in the U.S.

The federal government has struggled to process and accommodate the influx of illegal human traffic but specifically the spike in children. They don’t have enough beds, food or sanitary facilities.

U.S. authorities estimate that between 60,000 to 80,000 children without parents will cross the border this year in what the White House is calling an “immediate humanitarian crisis.”

Earlier in June, the White House announced a plan to spend millions in a government-wide response by sending aide to governments in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to help with crime and violence prevention.

In mid-June, Vice President Joe Biden also spoke with leaders in the three countries as well as Mexico about working together to promote security.

Biden’s objective was to emphasize that adults arriving with their children in the United States don’t meet the requirements for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which defers deportation for children brought to the United States before June 15, 2012.

Obama also spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto about the issue and has warned families who see the dangerous trip as the best option for their children.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back. More importantly, they may not make it,” Obama said to ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The White House will also ask Congress to ensure that the administration has the authority it deems necessary to effectively use these funds. That includes expanded authority for Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson in processing the return and removal of unaccompanied minor children and increased penalties for individuals who smuggle minors across the border.

CNN Senior White House Correspondent Jim Acosta contributed to this report.

They DO need to be sent back. On that I agree.

More proof that reading IS fundamental (and a few grammar/spelling lessons aren't a bad thing either) :

    Here we go again

This money hasn't been requested to send the Mexicans back to Mexico, it's requested so "our" Fed Gov can feed, clothe & ship the illegals all over America. What's shame on both sides of the isle!!!

You mean he wants to money to exacerbate the problem he created. Some of those people are going to eventually trickle north and maybe then you will see what are chore it is to handle. I am sending a note to my congressman to say absolutely no to that money. If they want to secure the border that would be nice but otherwise I guess we will all have to wallow in this mess that Obama created by not ENFORCING LAWS. Its been going on for years so what's the difference.

There is zero need for $2B or any additional funds for this. Use the bodies you have and send all these illegals back across the border. All this is doing is destroying our country even more. Don't agree, you are not an American and should free to go back across the borders with them.

Its a bait and switch like everything else Obama does. I mean really. Who trusts the man? There is always some underlying reason or scheme like it is a chess match with children. Its sickening but that is who he is. They have the chess board out at the white house and kiddies are part of the game. This is exactly why not much will be accomplished his last few years in office.

They are able to apply for asylum under a law passed by a Republican Congress, and signed into law by GWB. Back then, they were viewed as a source of cheap labor to break up unions. I've met many Hispanics in the late 1990s and early 2000s, note I said early, who favored Republicans over Democrats because Republicans "wanted them to come here and find jobs."

This president needs to go on the record that all these people entering will be sent home. That will stop it when they are no longer looking forward to a free lunch.

Pathetic. Mr. Incompetent-in-Chief, do you really need $2b to enforce the law as it stands? Why can't the Feds just turn them back to the border instead of shipping them to cities all over the country. Perhaps because this is the perfect way for Dems to get votes thanks to their disregard for voter ID cards?

This administration is the worst in history; their blatant disregard for laws and inability to avoid scandals (oh sure, the IRS can't produce the mails because a client PC crashed...we all believe that one). Any of you who still support this travesty of a president should be ashamed at yourselves as this administration is single-handedly ruining our country beyond repair simply to placate their lust for power.

We need to get rid of the minimum wage in the United States. That is the candy that the children are coming for. It kills me the number of peopl who make perilous treks hoping to grab our bras ring. Everyone OUTSIDE this country thinks they can make a fortune here. Everyone INSIDE the country knows the jobs are chasing the lower wages in other countries. Us Americans are caught in the middle thanks to a government who takes cares only of itself. Rememeber: when the government goes bankrupt, no-one who works for the government goes bankrupt. And while they will lose their jobs, they will have been the last jobs to have . . .

I view the "humanitarian crises" at the border as a scorched earth scheme (Mexican gang members, disease, $2 billion) to force Republicans to sign the Senate's amnesty bill. It's kind of like the temper tantrum Obama threw after sequester was implemented when he shut down the White House tours, the Blue Angels, federal parks... he just wants us to feel the pain when he doesn't get his way. This is terrorism.

Our Government breaks laws every day but this ONE they uphold? Send all those children right back across the boarder and put that fence up, better, put up a wall that no one can climb or dig under and secure that boarder like they did in "Escape from New York" with Snake Pliskin.

What's nuts is the right wing's resistance to paying for "collecting them and shipping the right back." The small government always wants the government to do its' bidding, but never wants to pay for it. Never.

So the POTUS created the issue with his "pen and phone" and non enforcement of our laws and now he expects everyone else to pay of it? Way to own up Mr. President.

Have you read about Italy? The same thing is and has been happening there. To pretend that Obama "created" this immigration crisis is naïve and solves nothing.

If the right wing doesn't want to pay to have them processed and returned to their countries, what makes you think that the right wing will pay to have a two thousand mile, trillion dollar wall built?

Have you stopped and considered how long it would take to construct a wall like that? The problem is in the here and now, which demands an immediate answer.

This is a Chamber of Commerce fantasy. Half the 15-25 million illegals do not want amnesty or citizenship. They wish to continue working under the table for cash and pumping out anchor babies on your dime. We are compassionate and foolish people, supply the captains of industry cheap labor and taxpayers foot the bills

With all the babies being aborted under Obamas watch, he needs these south of the border kids to replenish the population and for future incarcerations when they become adults.

Not a penny for housing illegals, they should never have been allowed to enter our country in the first place. This entire event was orchestrated by Liberals to demonstrate the immigration issue. Obama let them in, now they can all stay at his house.

Why do we have to pour anymore money into it? Why can't Obama just use those executive powers he holds so dear to make the Border Patrol actually patrol the border.

24,000 BP agents assigned to the Southern Border, 1,983 miles of border, 2 agents every mile = 3,966 agents per shift, 4 shifts per day = 15,864 agents needed to secure the border, leaving an extra 8,136 agents to do other duties.

There are plenty of resources within the BP right now to secure the border but instead they are being used to man check points along the highways and byways 50-100 miles from the border in a futile attempt to catch them once they have already entered.

  24. This is Mexico's problem

No money for the illegals – it is not needed. Call the Mexican authorities and tell them we will be dropping off ALL of the illegals at the border. Mexico can deal with their own internal problems.

Send them all back – every day. If we do this, the crossings will stop because folks will know we cannot keep them
