Poll: Majority think Hillary Clinton can relate to average Americans

(CNN) – Despite recent fumbles on the state of her personal wealth, a new national survey shows more than half of respondents believe Hillary Clinton can relate to average Americans as well as other possible White House hopefuls can.

The NBC/Wall Street Journal/Annenberg poll released Sunday indicates 55% surveyed think Clinton can relate to the problems of everyday citizens. But 37% said Clinton, a likely 2016 presidential candidate, isn't as relatable as other potential White House hopefuls.

The survey was conducted from Thursday through Saturday, after a series of wealth-related comments that critics say prove the longtime Washington political fixture has lost touch with the struggles of ordinary people.

In a recent interview with ABC News at the start of her book tour peddling her new memoir, the former first lady described the financial situation of her and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as "dead broke" upon leaving the White House. Those comments, while correct - the Clintons did leave the White House with considerable debt - created the sense among some people that the former first family is out of step with the average American.

Asked later to explain the misstep, Clinton stumbled again on the topic of wealth, contrasting what she pays in income tax to that of other "truly" wealthy individuals, in an interview with The Guardian newspaper in Great Britain.

Clinton later said her comments were "unartful" and that her record defending the middle class "speaks for itself." Bill Clinton quickly came to his wife's defense. And President Barack Obama brushed off the commotion over the comments, underscoring the former secretary of state's commitment to public service in an interview that aired Sunday.

Still, Republicans continue to pounce on the comments, highlighting that Clinton and her husband now collect hefty sums for speaking engagements, left office with a sizable government pension as well as the promise of massive book advances. All this comes to the Clintons as income inequality and an ailing economy continue to dog the nation.

The NBC/WSJ/Annenberg poll was conducted from June 26-28 among 592 adults, contacted by telephone. The sampling error is plus or minus 5.1 percentage points.

CNN's Dan Merica and Cassie Spodak contributed to this report.

Hilary Clinton is an elitist – who personally attacked my Marine son without even having the full picture of the situation. She can go to hades for all I am concerned. I will drop the max into the donation bucket of whomever wins the GOP primary to run against her.

For starters Rupert Murdoch owns The Wall Street Journal and has a habit of firing writers whose stories do not advance his Right Wing Super Conservative views. Secondly, this "story" is a lightly veiled deconstruction of Hillary Clinton. The question is not quite the usual Karl Rove, " Does you mother know you beat your wife" approach to public opinion forming, but represents a no win result for Clinton . Has Karl Rove joined the CNN staff?

@Wake up-If you had followed politics before 2009 you would realize that past presidents have been treated the same way with disrespect. Even Obama has stated that the GOP opposition to his policies has nothing to do with his race. Do you have any evidence that GOP politician to against Obama because of his race?

And what else can he say smith? When he even mentions race he's called a racist. President Obama knows exactly why he's been treated like he has. And I reiterate no other POTUS has ever been as disrespected as this one. Everyone knows it but those that do the disrespecting think they're so smart that people don't know what it's about. But they're not and we do. While Clinton may have been mistreated he was never treated with so much disdain. And he was a lying cheater. President Obama has been a faithful loving husband yet none on the right can even credit him for that.

And racism is still able to exist because so many pretend it doesn't, it empowers the racist to say anything and do anything racist and then say " I am not a racist!"

"She was raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, a picturesque suburb located 15 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.

Hillary Rodham was the eldest daughter of Hugh Rodham, a prosperous fabric store owner, and Dorothy Emma Howell Rodham; she has two younger brothers, Hugh Jr. (born 1950) and Anthony (born 1954).

As a young woman, Hillary was active in young Republican groups and campaigned for Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater in 1964.

Rodham attended Wellesley College, where she was active in student politics and was elected senior class president before graduating in 1969. She then attended Yale Law School." – Biography.con

No way can she or any other millionaire professional politician relate to any average American. Silly question thought up by media pundits needing something to talk about to fill all the time on TV.

The only question we should be asking is: Do we feel this person can do the best job. That's what is most important.

The Repubs are just trying to scare people away to someone in their own clown car -They are REALLY AFRAID of Hillary since they are trying all their scare tactics even BEFORE she decides whether to run

    Are you kidding !
Even Obama can't relate to me and he's a half minority. As someone made mention the other day If I had their money I'd burn mine.

These people are as out of touch with average America as any Republican is. This whole notion of 'we the people' in America is perhaps the greatest con ever set forth upon humanity.

You can only vote for them , you can't give them the money to get that vote . Are we all so naïve that we believe anything , " ANYTHING " , they say . . . .
