Supreme Court narrowly limits labor-union powers

(CNN) – The Supreme Court on Monday narrowly limited the power of labor unions to collect dues for collective bargaining from some home health-care workers.

The 5-4 ruling comes in a case brought by Illinois care providers who disagreed with the state's decision to classify them as state employees and require them to pay fees to a union.

Meh...you can tell Alito was itching to overreach but probably didn't have the votes to go so far. Limited ruling is limited. Not very far-reaching in impact or scope although he was definitely working overtime to make every effort possible to lay groundwork for overturning other part union-related decisions.

And the rwnj will cheer at the destruction if workers rights, ans never question their intent, just blindly listen to the gop standard talking points, union bad!! Right, workers rights aren't needed are they, its not like your rich employers want more control of your life right, what's wrong with that right, wake up, they're taking your rights, and your OK with it, that's insane.

It is sad that the Supreme Court doesn't recognize the help that labor unions have provided over the course of time. When properly run, unions protect the rights of people that are trying to work in safe environments as well as bargain for better wages.

In this case, the work rules that these people are working under are part of the contract that the union worked out with the state. Shouldn't there be some recognition that the union did something for these people?

A classic ruling by a very conservative court. Probably what unions should do then is simply not protect the rights of workers who don't wish to join the union- they can be underpaid, forced to work 40+ hour weeks, get fired for no cause and more. Just more fodder proving the Right hates working=class Americans and wishes to strip them of any job protections or benefits- all at a time when corporate profits are at an all-time high.

So, Republicans by placing bosses' religious ideology over basic workers' rights (and remember before the ACA health insurance did cover birth control), and their inane attempts to not only (illegally) end abortion, but birth control too doesn't impact the doctor-patient relationship? You need to smell what you're peddling.

"all at a time when corporate profits are at an all-time high."

But they're struggling to pay the taxes on the private jets, so we just HAD to give them special tax treatment. Poor little guys....8 homes and 12 cars and maybe a tax-exempt Magic Healing Horse or two as well...all these things to support...and these greedy peon serf underlings are asking for salaries that enable them to feed and educate their worthless children? It's disgraceful. Next thing you know they'll be demanding to be able to retire comfortably at a reasonable age after a lifetime of service...as if "retirement" isn't synonymous with "dead weight" and "societal burden." Shameful peasants.

I know this is a talking point pushed by many on the right in the media, but it is something to think about. If Unions, Obamacare, Social Security..... are such good ideas. Why are people forced to pay into them instead of given a choice?

    --------------------------
It was a union powered, middle class that built this country into the unrivaled, economic powerhouse that conservatives keep talking about wanting to go back to. Wanting to go back to those idyllic days of "Father Knows Best", "Leave It To Beaver", "Dennis The Menace", "Hazel", etc.

It's the old management vs labor cycle at work. It is apparently management's turn to bat, and they are swinging to knock all voice from labor, to put them back in the corner and work them for everything they can possibly give. Eventually they will go too far, start employing children 60 hours a week or some such, and labor will have it's turn at bat again. Management is going short on labor, have been since the late nineties. The minority of laborers that are voting against labor will eventually feel undervalued and vote in favor of labor again. Let's hope though that the business leaders are more educated than in the past and realize our country booms when people are treated like people and not purely a commodity of business. A very few people get rich but the country slides backwards as a whole.

    ________________________________
Because left to their own selfish desires most people simply would not "pay into" any of those things and likely many more, including car insurance, income taxes, gasoline taxes, Medicare, bridge tolls, property taxes, the plumber and more. It is called "responsibility". If we all don't pay for these things they don't work, and life for everyone (except perhaps the rich) will get worse- by almost every measure. The Right USED to be for personal responsibility (and real patriotism)- now they want to be freeloaders and strut around with guns and give the store away to the rich. See the difference?

I explained unions in a prior post on this thread.

Before there was Social Security, people put their money into banks, who gambled it away and lost it all. Social Security was a means for the average worker to invest their money into a retirement fund without fear of it being taken by the robber barons.

Before there was Medicare, people would work their entire lives, retire and would frequently become ill. Insurance companies would drop the seniors when they became ill, and no other company would pick them up. Seniors would spend the retirement savings on long term medical care for themselves, or spouse. Their children would spend the life's savings trying to care for a parent who had expended their entire savings, who had sold their homes. Conservatives fought for the "right" of insurance companies to pick and choose, and to drop and deny. Medicare offered average workers a means to have health insurance in their retirement years. In other words, the only reason that we have Medicare is because of the right wing's defense of corporate greed. Period.

    Um, Sorry,
People are also voting against the Unions by about a 9 to 1 margin After the vote in Wisconsin defeating the public unions about half dropped their, Forced" membership. The Automobile Unions couldn't get the Union passed at Volkswagon in Memphis. Unions were killing Michigan. The voters sent them packing. But just think!, You still have your Nanny!

Rudy: News Flash. True we need good workers and good management. Working at a job is pretty easy. Being a good Steward of a Company is much more Hazardous. Wise up.
