Homeland Security chief: ‘We’re going to stem this tide’ of illegal immigration

Washington (CNN) – Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said Sunday the Obama administration will take steps to fix the nation’s broken immigration system, even without the help of Congress.

“There are a number of things that the President and I, within the confines of the law, can do to fix the broken immigration system, and we will,” Johnson said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Johnson said the federal government has already taken steps to reduce the deportation time for adults crossing alone at the border and is working to reduce the time for adults with children and also kids by themselves.

The immigration dilemma has come to the forefront of public attention as migrants fleeing poverty and violence from Central America, including many children without their parents, have crossed the U.S. border.

Unlike Mexican migrants who are deported immediately upon arrest, those from Central America must first be processed and then given a month to report to an immigration office.

Many of course don’t show and contribute to the nation’s now-estimated 11 million undocumented immigrant population.

The federal government estimates about 60,000 to 80,000 children will cross the border without parents this year, creating an urgent need for the government to provide shelter. Johnson said the government is already working hard to address the crisis.

“I think we need to find more effective, efficient ways to turn this tide around generally and we've already begun to do that,” Johnson said.

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, a state on the front lines of this dilemma, said President Barack Obama isn’t doing nearly enough.

“I don't believe he particularly cares whether or not the border of the United States is secure, and that's the reason there's been this lack of effort, this lack of focus, this lack of resources,” Perry said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Johnson said while much can be done on the U.S. side to control the influx, he also had a message for immigrants thinking about crossing the border or sending their children on their own in hopes for a better life.

“We have to do right by the children but at the end of the day, in the final analysis, our border is not open to illegal migration, and we will stem the tide,” Johnson said.

--for a while stop this legal immigration too. Trash is coming out of India. Jobs are shipped to India, so are our dollars. Watch out. Freeze immigration for twenty years or so till at least our job market turns good. Send hospital it's to jail if they hire any foreign medical junk, these guys are just buying medical diplomas on capitation fee and coming here. All junk, send them home. Watch out people that hire non-citizens.

i think the repubs are holding up the immigration issue on purpose to blame the president. the senate have passed a comprehensive imigration bill that would have given the border more resources to combat illegal immigrants, but the house deemed fit to ignore the bill as more and more illegal immigrants come to our country, even though they are the ones that spends america's money. this president has known to send back more illegal to their countries than the last 5 president combined, yet the repubs only want to sit on the sidelines do nothing and blame him for the things they should be doing, as usual, first of all the president doesn't write the laws he only enforces it. such as the law that was passed in 2008 during the Bush administration that states that only mexicans can be sent back to their countries immediately, but people from other countries have to be processed before sending them back. where can these people be processed if the american people doesnt want them in their towns. this is a job for congress to rewrite that law, and give to the president, but that wont happen because they are adding too much political mumbo jumbo into the fray, fooling the american people who is to be blamed like they have been doing for the past 5 years.

Good luck with that. The Republicans in Congress are stuck in neutral, and will probably vacillate back and forth between doing nothing and actually trying to subvert the actions of Homeland Security. After all, they need something to campaign on, right? I mean otherwise they've spent the last 6 years doing nothing- for nothing.

    Excuse me, good buddy,
Please don't talk this thing thing to death. Put all those border jumpers on a plane(s) and fly them back to Central America! Let the powers that be, down there sort it out! Develop a Registration form for all the illegals here now and give them 12 months to register and then close registrations! Those that Register can stay right where they are until they reach age 65. Then they have to leave. They can apply for citizenship in the meantime. They will pay for the Registration, say $500.00 each so the U.S. Taxpayer doesn't have to pay for the registration(s) and record keeping. They will pay Taxes as any other citizen does where they are but not Social Security as they aren't citizens! After Registrations are closed anyone caught here illegally will be deported post haste! Did I leave anything out? Don't let any grass grow under your feet! Get cracking!

"We’re going to stem this tide’ of illegal immigration."

But not by enforcing the law. By unilaterally changing the definition so that it's no longer "illegal".

It's not that fewer people will be coming here, but fewer will be breaking the law in doing so.

The ONLY thing broken with the immigration system is this lawless Obama administrations refusal to enforce ALL of the laws as written by Congress. Obama illegally, unlawfully and unConstitutionally created law when he exempted hundreds of thousands or millions from deportation. His doing this has created the illegal alien amnesty-citizenship rush at our southern border.

It is now going to cost us BILLIONS to fix his illegal activities. He has also caused these vulnerable women and children harm as they have been attacked, some raped, some killed while trying to get here. And the worse part is he now wants to use the disaster he created, to try and force people to rewrite our laws so the left can once again ignore them and not enforce them.

ALL these people MUST be sent back, ALL our laws must be ENFORCED WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Enough of the far left extremist Democrat Party's attempts to wreck this country with a tidal wave of ILLEGAL ALIENS!!

    It's about time !

More East Indian and Chines arrived with work visas this last to take American jobs week then all the latin American children being bussed into holding facilities.

How many refuges have been created as a direct result of US involvement in foreign conflict ?

Why don't immigrants want to migrate to Russa ?

Why won't those in countries of conflict stand and fight for a better way of life ?

The problem will only become worse as over population continues and natural resources become less available .

Well, it is now painfully clear that Obama and the Democrats have totally lied about the border being secured. If all these woman and children can easily cross the border, can you imagine how many others are doing it?

But this is really not a crisis down there. What you see is what the extremist Democrats and Obama WANT OUR BORDERS TO BE. This is the open borders they want. Just let the country be invaded by tens of millions of people, all poor, all uneducated, many in bad health, with no way to care and feed themselves. Welcome to the hundred billion dollar disaster Obama has personally created with his failed and illegal policies.

The only way to stem this is to seal the Southern borders with the military(the border agents are distracted by all these children)and let Mexico, which allowed them all to cross their territory-illegally-deal with them. They have a US Marine in a jail in Tijuana for making a wrong turn-but let thousands of non-Mexicans stream across their land to our borders-because they have
no fear of Obama, who should be at that Texas border area on Monday-not preening
at 3 "fundraisers"! Fundraising for whom? Democrats? They are doomed in 2014 and 2016, if Obama doesn't resign.

While a US Marine is detained in a Mexican
jail(God help him), Bergdahl is treated like a hero-and where is he??? He cannot be that bad of, so where are the press conferences
    or his parents???

Who's going to "stem the tide"? The Americans who can't find work? The Americans who do have work by paying higher taxes? Middle America will be gutted. That's Obama's plan. He not only doesn't honor the privileged office he holds – he is lawless and inflicts damage – and his acts will have repercussions for years to come.

We all here so called experts, telling us what the law is. However, the fact is, the law we have today, is largely the same as it was when passed by President, Reagan and the elected officials, at the time. It would be of help, if these news feeds would do a full report of the history, that this law created. A lot of the facts seem to be forgotten, (on purpose?). Like when it was signed, it offered a path to citizenship for nearly 3 million, and a U>S> supreme Court case, titled Plyor Vs. Doe, that said how the undocumented were to get an eduction , while shielding the parents from being charged by ICE. In short, employer's, wanted cheap labor, no with holding of taxes, and largely got away with it.

We don't have a problem with our "immigration system". -IT- works fine, and is one of the most generous in the WORLD.

What DO have a problem with is growing the BALLS to secure our borders ... which is the FIRST and PRIMARY duty of any national government. Without secure borders, you do not have a country.

He didn't announce one concrete idea that would stem the flow of illegal aliens coming from south of the border. To the contrary, he and Obama have slowly taken away almost all enforcement mechanisms. That is the message that has made it to Central America and that's why they are coming in big numbers now. Jeh doesn't have the balls to admit that.
What the people want is for these people to be quickly repelled back to Mexico. Let that country deal with it. Mexico can't get away from their responsibilities of not allowing these people to pass through their southern border, pass through their whole country and then pass through their northern border. Where is Mexico in all this? Let's hold them accountable publicly.

How about starting with enforcing the laws we have? There is not way to even propose a new immigration bill until the current laws are enforced and we actually see what else needs to be done to keep ILLEGALS out – of course this administration does not want to enforce any law that could actually help working Americans.

It seems that every member of this administration is a liar. For Johnson to say the border isn't open, right after he talks about how many children have com across that same border, shows he etihe can't remember his own lies, or actually believes what comes out of his mputh. If it is the latter, then he is too stupid to be in the position he now occupies, because you can't fix stupid.
