One in ten tune politics out

Washington (CNN) -- The midterm elections are just four months away, but a national poll indicates that one out of ten Americans apparently could care less.

According to the Pew Research Center's Political Typology report, 10% of the public isn't registered to vote, doesn't follow government or public affairs, and doesn't contribute to political parties.

The survey asked Americans about a wide range of political values and categorize them into eight groups, with the 10% who are politically disengaged labeled "the Bystanders."

So who are they?

"Bystanders are young (38% are under 30), and nearly a third (32%) are Hispanic. A third of Bystanders are foreign born, a higher share than any of the other typology groups, including 29% total who are not citizens," said a release by the Pew Research Center.

Only four in ten know who controls Congress

The research on the Bystanders, released Monday, also indicates they have a more favorable view of the Democratic Party than the GOP, and have a mix of conservative and liberal attitudes.

Understandably, they don't have interest in government or politics, or in business and finance. But nearly two-thirds said they are interested in celebrities and entertainment.

The Pew Research Center poll was conducted January 23-March 16, with 10,013 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus two percentage points.

If one out of ten are tuned out to politics, then why is it that 3 or 4 out of ten cannot name the Speaker of the House?

Instead of "bystanders", call them what they are or will become – societal leeches.

It's really sad. Unfortunately the only thing many people think about these days is unreality tv. The majority can't even name the VP of the country but they know every Kartrashian name including the baby.

Educate yourselves people. The mind is a terrible thing to waste. That's not just an old 80's catchphrase. 😗😗

I prefer to call them disenfranchised, because it is people who think like you who would exclude them from everything.

No, they are not self disenfranchised. You're judging books by their covers. As far as your thoughts go, you have expressed them quite clearly over the years and in this article. Societal leeches, indeed. Your words betray you, exposing your hate and loathing.

Let's see... no interest in government or politics, business, or finance. Interested in celebrities and entertainment. I'm certain they'll make significant contributions to society – maybe as purchasers of The National Enquirer and loyal viewers of E! TV. God, Rudy... you just love arguing for arguement's sake. And yes – they are or will become SOCIETAL LEECHES. That's not hate and loathing. That's calling a spade a spade.

And the righties are extremely happy about this as it shows their never ceasing negativity is paying dividends. Citizens who are low information, tuned out, or ignorant to politics are more likely to fall for the right wing propaganda machine or stay at home on election day. It is why they pass laws to disenfranchise voters and all their rhetoric is negative... it behooves them for people NOT to be engaged and NOT to be educated and NOT to vote.
Otherwise their party would have been toast decades ago. They tenaciously hold on to power through their wealthy masters pocketbooks and their 24 hour, 7 day a week, foreign owned propaganda network.
Gerrymandering and voter suppression... how they kept the House despite over 1,000,000 more votes for Dem candidates for the House than republicants.
Anyone with an IQ over 75 can see this...

Interesting fair, Rudy is right I think we have a pretty good read on you, your the one assuming because they like being entertained, they will inevitably become leeches, man you should really hear yourself from here, too funny, you sound like a bitter old lady who's afraid the poor bkacks and Hispanics are going to live high on the hog off her tax dollars, I feel the same way about your precious 1%. If your doing so well, why do you hate do much? Of course you don't hate, I talk that way about others daily, hello, hypocracy calling!

Most people are concerned about their financial situation. When it gets bad then they perk up. Most of the time it is too late and severe corrections are in store. Of course when the Liberal News Media doesn't cover bad news it is hard to find bad things out. According to the recent Polls the people are mad. And there are abrupt changes coming in the next and the next elections.

“one out of ten Americans apparently could care less.”

This results of this poll is dead wrong; I’d say it's nine out of ten Americans apparently could care less especially since the poll that shows president Obama is the worst president since WWII.

Unfortunately, there are many more for whom politics is their "irrational outlet"- and seeming live for the fringe beliefs and ideas that attach themselves to mainstream politics with conspiracies, lies and untruths.

No doubt everyone should vote- but their impact on our politics is far less than the real problems. Besides- the Right is working hard to disenfranchise the poor, the minority and the female voter. Why sweat this?

We need all citizens engaged in the republic process and vote. If we don't have all involved, then it becomes who has the most money to spend on lobbying the Congress to get something done or keep from something from getting done. The founding fathers wanted an engaged and informed electorate. We need to have everyone voting and listening to the problems going on because there could be that one person who has the answers to some of our problems isn't listening just yet.

It is Bush, Reagan are the worst presidents in History, format looted with wars and Halliburton while later to trickle down and sale of arms to Iran. True. Check your mind.

"they are or will become SOCIETAL LEECHES"

You go a bridge too far. Plenty of successful, independently wealthy people have no interest in politics, etc. "Leeches" implies they're somehow only poor, unemployed, receiving gov't assistance, etc. Just because the survey found that younger and Hispanic demographics had larger percentages than some other groups represented in the results does not mean that people not interested in politics are leeches. Your "logic" is entirely faulty and contains some pretty abhorrent inherent biases and assumptions.

Sadly these folks are blind to the corporate and religious attempts to take over our government.
The radical right likes it this way. They prefer a large uninformed body people that won't notice the erosion of their religious freedom until it is too late. Education inequality and taking science out of the classroom is just fine with them.
