Senate confirms Castro as HUD secretary

(CNN) - Mr. Castro is coming to Washington.

The Senate on Wednesday easily confirmed San Antonio, Texas Mayor Julian Castro to be the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The vote was 71-26 in favor of confirmation.

Castro, 39, is seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, grabbing national exposure in September of 2012 when he delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Castro's twin brother, Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas, and several other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Texas delegation made the trek from the House to the Senate side of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to watch the confirmation vote live.

"I applaud the bipartisan majority of Senators who today confirmed Julián Castro as our next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development," said President Obama in a statement released to the press.

"Julián has lived the American Dream in his own life, and I'm confident he will help Americans across our country seize their own piece of that dream for themselves and their children," Obama's statement concluded.

The San Antonio mayor will replace Shaun Donovan, who is awaiting Senate confirmation to become the next Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Castro is considered one of the most prominent Latino members of the Democratic Party, and is also considered a future Democratic presidential prospect.

CNN Senior Congressional Producer Ted Barrett contributed to this report.

you mean like the tens of thousands of illegals invading our country are seizing their own piece of that dream for themselves and their children, at our expense and the expense of our children?

btw, people don't sieze the american dream or any part of it... they work for it!! i guess it is just too much to expect obama to get the leftist rhetoric out of his speech patterns.

Does he have any real and proven administrative skills or is he just another incompetent Obama political hack put in place to cover up the Obama disasters? Is he capable of running a massive federal bureaucracy? Time will tell I guess. Only two more years to get through so I guess we'll survive if he is as big a screw up as Sebelius, or Naplitano, or Shinseki, or Holder, or Clinton or ....

Obama once again demonstrating he is not looking towards the best interest of America, but is willing to hand over its future to illegal immigrants.

@just saying, here's an idea for you: how about engaging someone in something other than a personal attack or condescending put-down? It seems as though you are very thin on original thoughts, but very good at abuse.

@ Tony D, are there any people on the GOP side with the experience and credibility to run anything? Seems as though you've forgotten the last time we had a GOP businessman in charge of things, we had the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression. I would not go around touting so-called GOP management skills

  19. it must be said

Let's see, he's hispanic, he's a Democrat, it's an election year. What other qualifications could he possibly need?! He obviously is over qualified to run a large government agency.

Has he ever actually run anything besides a little city, which this agency likely dwarfs?

Really. How much experience do you need to be in the GOP?
    - Can you say NO every time Obama opens his mouth?
    - Can you roll over for the religious right?
    - Can you take orders from the Koch's?
    - Can you put morality on hold to change positions as needed?
    You're IN!

Oh just spewing lies and hatred, it's not the Democratic Party that's moved to the left, it's the GOP that's gone so far right, they'll never be in the middle again. As for President Obama he's hardly far left, at best he's a centrist.
