CNN's GUT CHECK for July 10, 2014

CNN’s POLITICAL GUT CHECK | for July 10, 2014 | 5 p.m.
—  n. a pause to assess the state, progress or condition of the political news cycle

PERRY: ‘HE SHOWED UP AT SANDY. WHY NOT TEXAS?’ ... Texas Gov. Rick Perry and others are lashing out at President Barack Obama's decision not to tour border facilities overwhelmed by a flood of undocumented children, saying he was shirking a fundamental duty. "The American people expect to see their President when there is a disaster," he told CNN's Kate Bolduan in an interview that aired Thursday, citing Obama's trip to the East Coast to tour damage caused by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. "He showed up at Sandy. Why not Texas?"

Both Republicans and the White House have described the crush of Central American children as a humanitarian crisis, but Obama said Wednesday that visiting facilities where the children are processed and detained would be little more than a photo opportunity. "There's nothing that is taking place down there that I am not intimately aware of and briefed on. This isn't theater. This is a problem," Obama said Wednesday. – Tom Cohen, Ed Payne and Dana Ford

PHOTO-OP CATCH-22? Damned if he does. Damned if he doesn't. That is essentially the White House explanation for why President Obama opted against a visit to the country's besieged southern border during his trip to Texas this week. – Jim Acosta

BOEHNER RIPS OBAMA: “Listen, this is a problem of the President's own making,” House Speaker John Boehner declared at his weekly news conference Thursday while discussing the border crisis. “He's been President for five and a half years! When is he going to take responsibility for something?”

CHRISTIE HAULS IN $60M MORE FOR RGA … It appears the George Washington Bridge controversy New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's dealing with this year back in the Garden State hasn't affected his standing as one of the GOP's most potent fundraising rainmakers. The Republican Governors Association announced Thursday that it's raised $60 million since Christie was elected chairman of the organization last November. – Paul Steinhauser

… AMERICANS WANT LESS OF PALIN: A new survey indicates that 54% of voters say they've heard enough from Palin and would prefer that the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate be less outspoken in political discourse. That includes nearly two-thirds of Democrats, a majority of independents, and nearly four in 10 Republicans.

TECH WATCH: FEDS SUE AMAZON FOR RIPPING OFF KIDS’ PURCHASES ... Federal regulators announced a lawsuit against Amazon Thursday, accusing the retail giant of illegally charging parents for millions in gaming-related purchases by their kids. The Federal Trade Commission says Amazon allowed kids to make in-app purchases of virtual items like "coins" and "stars" in Kindle Fire games without their parents' consent, a violation of federal law. Amazon earns 30% on all such purchases. – James O’Toole

THE BUZZ: OBAMA-GALIFIANAKIS INTERVIEW NOMINATED FOR EMMY ... He won't be walking the red carpet next month, but President Barack Obama has already made his mark on this year's Emmy Awards. The commander-in-chief's highly popular "Between Two Ferns" interview with comedian Zach Galifianakis earned an Emmy Award Nomination on Thursday in the Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program category. – Wade Payson-Denney

MARKET WATCH: U.S. stocks close lower on concerns about Europe's economy, but finish off their lows. Dow drops 69 points.

Leading CNNMoney: Why state and local reporting is suffering
When journalists and researchers express concerns about cutbacks in newsrooms, they often point to America's statehouses, where there's a perception that important local reporting has suffered because of newspapers' financial struggles. Does that match up with reality? Essentially yes, says the Pew Research Center. – Brian Stelter

REP. DARRELL ISSA, R-CALIFORNIA, TO FOX NEWS ON NEWLY RELEASED LOIS LERNER EMAILS: This is “a smoking gun. This is Lois Lerner clearly cautioning people not to say things on email and being delighted to find out that the local instant chat they have, this Microsoft product, wasn’t tracking what they said.”

– Cuellar: U.S. ‘can’t play defense on the one yard line’ –
REP. HENRY CUELLAR, D-TEXAS, TO CNN’S ASHLEIGH BANFIELD: “We have to go after those smuggling organizations. We can't play defense on the one yard line called the U.S. border. We've got to look at this as a humanitarian crisis.”

TRIVIA ANSWER from @sarafischer

It took a few months for Texas Gov. Rick Perry to decide what he wanted on his boots. But after some thought, Perry told a custom boot maker that “I want an American flag on each one of them. And on the left one, ‘liberty’ and on the right one, ‘freedom,’” he said in an interview with ABC News.

""I'm not interested in photo ops. I'm interested in solving a problem," Obama said in response to the uproar over his Texas itinerary."

Wrong. The actual quote is as follows:

"THIS ISN'T THEATER. THIS IS A PROBLEM. I’m not interested in photo-ops; I’m interested in solving a problem. And those who say I should visit the border, when you ask them what should we be doing, they're giving us suggestions that are embodied in legislation that I’ve already sent to Congress. So it’s not as if they're making suggestions that we’re not listening to. In fact, the suggestions of those who work at the border, who visited the border, are incorporated in legislation that we’re already prepared to sign the minute it hits my desk."

CNN and the rest are focusing solely on that one split-sentence and deliberately leaving out the rest of the quote, particularly the beginning 2 sentences, because it clearly shows that characterizing it as Obama saying "I don't do photo ops"...which is the re-write that the GOP/Teatrolls and their agitprop machine are using...is blatantly dishonest. It's borderline lying and nothing more than the GOP/Teatrolls and MSM working hard together to manufacture nontroversy.

Sorry Texas and America... When our consulate in Benghazi was under attack and people were dying, it didn't stop Obama from going to bed to get a good nights sleep so he could fly out to Nevada for a campaign fund raiser the next day. Just not his problem as well as bad optics.

Plenty of time to fly into a devastated hurricane zone though a week before the election to throw money out and pretend he cared.

Texas? Thousands of warehoused illegals, many sick, many more coming, can't hide them and ship them around the country faster enough, costing billions. Obama sure can't be seen THERE 4 months before an election. I don't know why? Maybe because he said the borders were secured? And if they were secured, how do thousands of unattended children simply walk across the border? Another Obama lie exposed....

LOL! No it's not. AFTER the nontroversy blew up and AFTER the investigation started, someone was telling people to be careful of what they say? BFD!!!!! "Smoking gun" means no inferences or assumptions or indirect conclusions need to be drawn. It's like finding...wait for it....someone holding a smoking gun while standing over a dead body when you walk around the corner and see them for the first time. Here, it is nothing but an INFERENCE...and a strained one...that Issa is drawing, ASSUMING that someone telling people to be cautious about what they say in light of an ongoing investigation "simply must have been trying to cover everything up." Wrong. It is certainly true that it is ONE OF the inferences you could draw, but it certainly doesn't comply with Occam's Razor. Any lawyer...or heck, non-brain-dead person...in the country will tell you that if you're under investigation, particularly one in which the investigators are ideologically driven to persecute you and have already made myriad strained and disproven accusations...you watch what you say. Duh. The fact that this email occurred AFTER the whole blow up and investigation started is a very important, and no doubt soon-to-be-ignored and glossed-over, fact here. Had they found something showing her doing this BEFORE the blow up and investigations started, it might make the inference a bit stronger, but as it stands, this is nonsense...just more out-of-context self-serving spin.

If I recall correctly, Gov. Oops, you wanted to secede from the United States and abhor government involvement people's lives. You also think states are better equipped to deal with matters within their borders. Then figure this mess out yourself and keep the federal government out of it. What a cown.

Obama and the dems don't want to send the illegals back. He doesn't care about blacks or whites just the hispanic vote. When 15 or 20 illegals are living in the house next to you then maybe every one will pay attention to these 50,000 illegals. Oh yea and we have to pay for them. If congress gives him the money he still is not going to deport them.

LOL. If you have done nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear about what you say. Plain and simple. This is about as obvious as can be and each domino that falls is more evidence of the wrongdoing. Of course you are going to defend this but common sense, a phrase you love to use, dictates there is no doubt. Or perhaps it's just a major coinky dinky that emails were lost, apologies were made by the IRS, a conversation about not saying anything amongst so much more evidence means nothing to you. It's kinda sad how much you put your politics above the country and this is a prime example of it.

Listen up, Rick Perry. For a guy touting his secession points not too long ago (2010) you're not exactly on a roll here when it comes to credibility. You want the big Federal dollars, you're going to have to ask your own party as nicely as you can with a pretty pretty please sugar on top grovel. They expect nothing less. It is good that you didn't push your formal withdrawal from the United States of America too far, else you'd be President of the Federation of Immigrants without the opportunity for US dollars or media attention you are now afforded.

Under his reign the only people who can afford vacations are the welfare frauds, dope addict and corrupt unions.
