Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

Washington (CNN) - It's one of the hottest national debates this summer: What to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S.

A new national poll indicates that a majority of Americans approve of President Barack Obama's short term remedy, but most give the President and his GOP critics in Congress a thumbs down on how they're handling the crisis along the country's southern border.

According to an ABC News/Washington Post survey released Tuesday, 53% support the White House plan to spend $3.7 billion to immediately deal with the situation, with 43% saying they disapprove of the proposal. The survey indicates an expected partisan divide, with two-thirds of Democrats supportive of the Obama plan. That number drops to 51% among independents and down to 35% among Republicans. Hispanics questioned in the poll support the proposal by a 54%-43% margin.

Even though a majority back the President's proposal, only a third of Americans give Obama a thumbs up on how he's handling the issue of undocumented immigrants entering the country. While that's nothing to brag about, only 23% of those questioned say they approve of how congressional Republicans are dealing with the crisis. Even Republicans are divided (48% approval – 45% disapproval) on how federal lawmakers from their own party are handling the issue.

Battle lines drawn in immigration debate

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted July 9-13, with 1,016 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

    @Sniffit-You think anything said critical or negative towards Obama is racism. Where is this proof that the GOP or Non-Dems are racist? Do you have anything to back up your claims?

    I have a better idea. Why don't you first prove your presumption that Sniffit thinks "anything said critical or negative towards Obama is racism". Do that first, would you? Otherwise, your question has no merit. None.

    Significant distances of the border are defined by the Rio Grand River. How do you plan to erect a wall in the middle of the river? What would such a wall do to the wildlife and environment.

    I do believe that you had claimed to be a moderate just yesterday, while you were trying to deny that you were not in fact a Rand Paul Libertarian.. Don't have to prove you're a libertarian extremist at heart.. Your severed case of libertarian halitosis tells the whole story.

    They're talking only about the things said by elected officials and news broadcasters. Yeah, Harry Reid once called Bush a liar for his flip-flop on Yucca Mountain, but the whole Democratic Party didn't start calling him a liar. Every liberal broadcaster on cable news didn't start calling him a liar, which they do to the president on Fox.

    Fox even had Glenn Beck declare the POTUS to be a someone "who hates white people", which quickly became the coded language, "Obama hates America". I guess when you have had a lifetime of experiencing racism like they seem to, I guess you develop a talent for recognizing it.

    How much first hand experience do you have with racism? Rand Paul thinks being a bigot is a from of free speech. Do you agree with that opinion?

    Please stop with the false equivalence smith. Nothing anyone says about Bush could ever be as extreme as the things said about President Obama. Nothing. And you want to know why? Because rich melanin challenged males were never made to feel inferior in this country. Because melanin challenged people have never been killed for simply learning to read, wanting to vote, or looking at a woman of the opposite race. It's all false equivalence smith and each and every time you try and attack us about speaking up for our rights it just makes you look like you're one of them. Shucking and jiving is an old racist phrase used from way back in the days when blacks had no rights. It's quite offensive. Maybe not to you and your kind but it is to me and mine.

    Only uneducated liberals think you need to put walls up in the middle of rivers. Illegals can take as many baths in the river as they like. You say, rivers have what are called banks. That is where you place your illegal repellent. Rolls and rolls of razor wire. Maybe a line of sharpened stakes to discourage inflatables. It doesn't have to stop 100% but anything would be an improvement over the 0% we have now with Obama.

    The ONLY thing driving the GOP/Teatroll clown car as far as the immigration issue is concerned. You can stop denying it too. We know. Everyone knows. It's the world's most poorly hidden secret that the GOP/Teatrolls don't like minorities, don't like them voting because they don't vote for GOPers/Teatrolls (because you don't like them and they know it) and that the GOP/Teatrolls are deathly afraid of the demographic shifts towards a "browner" country that doesn't like THEM.
    =======
    What's so funny is that the only thing you really care about is their votes. That's it. You constantly project your feelings on others and this is no different (If I think "x", then my enemies – the repubs – MUST think "y"). So when I said to you that a compromise for these people is in order to get them on legal footing – you freaked out about NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!!" Grrrrr!!! You really think that the average person that is here illegally cares about voting? Of course they don't. Their biggest concern is that they can get locked up and are always looking over their shoulder which is a terrible way to live. But something has got to give...that's what compromise is. I don't think they should pay a fine because they are already hurting for money. I don't think it's imperative that they learn English – I think they should want to learn English for themselves to be more functional and have better opportunities – but they shouldn't be forced to learn it. They should have some penalty for breaking our laws and coming here illegally. They must know, and future generations need to get the message – that you can't just come here and get everything that an American gets without repercussions. If voting is so important to them, then they can go back and come in the legal way. If not, you must give up something to get something and losing the right to vote is perfectly fine and a fair price to pay. I can guarantee you that you care more about the ability to vote than they do.

    And how original of you to go into the "brown" mantra again. I hadn't heard that one before. Kudos for the originality.

    This means we must be prepared to do this with most of the world's population should they make it to our border. We need to raise tax rates immediately to 100% and start building massive camps to house all of the people that will be coming. How many can we count on you taking into your home and paying for? You should be able to fit 5-10 in that bedroom instead of just your one kid right?

    Thanks for posting more obvious, easily proven lies. Seems like that is all the lefties got these days. I guess they learn well from the Liar of the Year."
    ====

    That's because the investigations found that the firm's collapse and bankruptcy was not the result of fraud but poor risk controls and systems in the firm. Because that's not criminal, there is a massive civil suit by the gov't to deal with it. Is Corzine a good guy? No. Are his hands dirty and his motives suspect? Sure. Was what happened unethical and bad mojo and evidence that he's a horrible person? Sure. Did he do anything illegal? No. Is the federal gov't taking action to address the problem? YES. It's not doing nothing. It's doing what is available as a remedy.

    Now, let's talk about criminalizing what actually WAS the problem and wrong and unethical about Corzine's firm and its behavior: you come let me know as soon as you've obtained Teatroll Command's approval to support that kind of financial system reform.
