Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

Washington (CNN) - It's one of the hottest national debates this summer: What to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S.

A new national poll indicates that a majority of Americans approve of President Barack Obama's short term remedy, but most give the President and his GOP critics in Congress a thumbs down on how they're handling the crisis along the country's southern border.

According to an ABC News/Washington Post survey released Tuesday, 53% support the White House plan to spend $3.7 billion to immediately deal with the situation, with 43% saying they disapprove of the proposal. The survey indicates an expected partisan divide, with two-thirds of Democrats supportive of the Obama plan. That number drops to 51% among independents and down to 35% among Republicans. Hispanics questioned in the poll support the proposal by a 54%-43% margin.

Even though a majority back the President's proposal, only a third of Americans give Obama a thumbs up on how he's handling the issue of undocumented immigrants entering the country. While that's nothing to brag about, only 23% of those questioned say they approve of how congressional Republicans are dealing with the crisis. Even Republicans are divided (48% approval – 45% disapproval) on how federal lawmakers from their own party are handling the issue.

Battle lines drawn in immigration debate

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted July 9-13, with 1,016 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

"I do believe that you had claimed to be a moderate just yesterday, while you were trying to deny that you were not in fact a Rand Paul Libertarian.. Don't have to prove you're a libertarian extremist at heart.. Your severed case of libertarian halitosis tells the whole story."

The thing is that Rudy is so far left (even though for some reason he tries to say he is a moderate) that everyone is to the right of him and people like Yolanda, you and me are looked at as extremist because we are so far from his far, far left opinions. I don't understand what his motivation is to try and come off as moderate when he embraces the progressive principles so much. There isn't one issue that he isn't a strong liberal – except for certain things now like the NSA, drones and the IRS – but that's because he does indeed find President Obama to be a hero and savior and does everything he can to project that image. That's why he places the "hero/savior" meme on me about Rand Paul. I like Rand Paul but certainly don't worship him in any way because, at the end of the day, he's just another politician (although at least he does seem to think for himself rather than the establishment).

@Rudy-What`s the matter? Not man enough to admit you were wrong about my posts? You have failed to show any comment of mine claiming to be a libertarian or a Rand Paul fan.
First, tell me a date prior to yesterday where you claimed to be an independent. You need to first prove your own claim. I'm not sure if you ever made one that I've ever seen. You claim to be an independent. Most Libertarians regard themselves as independents. Just ask tom.

Where is this proof that the GOP or Non-Dems are racist? Do you have anything to back up your claims?
An independent would never defend the Republican Party like that? Your "non-dems" embellishment has been ignored.

"-You think anything said critical or negative towards Obama is racism. "

Not true. I think the overall behavior and words of the GOP/Teatrolls over the past 6 years is driven by a strong undercurrent of racism and that the record is replete with evidence to show it is a cancer that has spread throughout their party, their politics, their policies, their agenda and their pandering. Specific, rational, cogent, coherent and informed criticisms of things Obama has done are fine in my book and I will address them on the level. Robot parroting of party-line ideology, support for the widespread efforts of the party to tap into the country's dormant racism in response to a black man being elected POTUS and the ceaseless, unrelenting, catch-22, darned-if-he-does-darned-if-doesn't, cognitively dissonant, take both positions at once, radicalized, extremist, bitter, hyperbolic blanket criticism of EVERY SINGLE THING HE DOES NO MATTER WHAT is a very big indicator of just how driven by prejudice and emotion, not rational thought, the entire GOP/Teatroll movement has become. There is literally not a day that goes by where we're not treated to insane moon-howling about even the most trivial, innocuous things he has done or said. THAT, to me, is indicative and symptomatic of the racism underlying this 6 year hissy fit. And here's your problem: the minority community feels the same way and the GOP/Teatrolls are fundamentally incapable of convincing them otherwise.

I suspect these are the same polling places that predicted Romney winning in a landslide during the 2012 presidential election. As a former republican, I say we treat these children as former compassionate conservatives (they don't seem to exist anymore). Feed them, treat them and sort out all the details.

"I never said I was moderate. I`ve always stated Im Independent. There`s a big difference."

Yes, well. Sitting on the fence telling yourself you are an Independent while only looking right might explain the confusion some folks have on your fence sitting abilities. Just saying.

As far as racism, smith. One needs to occasionally get off the fence and put one's toes in the water to determine how hot or cold the water actually is.

    Otherwise ..... ?

Rudy???? Obviously a wall built on the river is ........silly. And are you serious about playing off the immigration problem with questions about the environment? I pray that the congressional dems don't take that path. But......nothing surprizes me if the "Princess" and "Crazy Harry" get involved.
Silly? The impassable Wall is the brain child of the right wing. Silly, indeed. Seriously, though. How is your silly Wall going to stop people from crossing the Rio Grande unless you build the sill wall right up the middle of the river?

You cannot build it on the Mexican side of the river. If you build the silly wall along the banks of the U.S., then it would serve no purpose. People would already be on U.S. soil before the reached the silly wall if you build it on the shoreline. So, that leaves only one option. You'd have to build your silly wall right up the middle of the river for hundreds of miles, I'd say. It's silly idea, isn't it?

Don't you love how everything boils down to race with liberals. Give me a break. I do not even know anyone who cares what color anyone is anymore. Its absurd. But your right about one thing – I can't stand Obama but it has nothing to do with the color of his skin. Tim Scott who is awesome gets called an uncle tom all the time and I never remember Alberto Gonzales or Condoleezza Rice throwing out racism charges. They start losing any argument and here comes the race baiters.

We constantly harp on other countries for shoddy human rights, yet there's a faction in our own land ready, willing and more than happy to treat children as if they were invaders. Some have even said as much in these posts. Some day these children will be adults, and what will they think of the United States, if we treat them with such heavy handed techniques now. Seems many of you are wanting to make future enemy's, as opposed to making future friends and allies. For Shame.

Why do these polls matter so much? When some random percentage say they approve of disapprove of the plans of a particular President or party in Congress, how many within that percentage have any idea of the actual details of the plan?

Why should I care about the opinion of a bunch of people with no actual information to form that opinion?

@Sniffit-First, I said the GOP party not some idiot at a protest or Bundy. All you posted were conspiracy theories and prejudgments. Border control is not racism. A fillabuster is not racism. The GOP is not even all one race, there are many races in the GOP ranks. So how can they to be for one supreme race?

Put the anti-Obama statements are racist/not racist aside. It's still quite terrible that the GOP main (and stated by their leadership, McConnell for example) goal is to oppose Obama at every turn, regardless.

They just want to see Obama fail. That's their victory. Of course, this approach hurts the country as a whole, but that doesn't matter.

Regardless of the role of race or not, it's nonsense to put hurting Obama presidency above the needs of the country. GOP should be able to work with Obama on some things.

2008 Bush issues a doctrine that now Obama must support/defend/amend. Bush issues no doctrine, Obama does not have to take the action he did, which the right uses to blame him for everything. How come Bush did NOTHING about it when he was governor or even proposed anything to Washington when he was governor? How come the GOP NEVER mentions that.

I have never heard a single idea proposed by the GOP. Not one.

GOP's idea about immigration: "We need more money. We need solutions. Oh wait, President Obama offered $4 billion? We don't need more money. We don't need any solution."

Fools, and they wonder why they are polling around 11% right now (Hillary is above 65%!).

Uh, most Libertarians consider themselves to be independent. But, I would like to thank smith and tom for clearing that up. It is unfortunate that smith has so emphatically denied being a moderate, because where does that leave him? Exactly where I put him, an extremist.

This problem is not President's, neither Dems nor Republicans. It is the problem which affects every citizen. The money which the President has asked must be disbursed immediately without any delay. There is no way he can act without any single penny. Suppose it was a swarm of grasshoppers (god forbid) attacked the nation, would republicans had denied the President's request? I don't understand why are these people not sensible?
