Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

Washington (CNN) - It's one of the hottest national debates this summer: What to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S.

A new national poll indicates that a majority of Americans approve of President Barack Obama's short term remedy, but most give the President and his GOP critics in Congress a thumbs down on how they're handling the crisis along the country's southern border.

According to an ABC News/Washington Post survey released Tuesday, 53% support the White House plan to spend $3.7 billion to immediately deal with the situation, with 43% saying they disapprove of the proposal. The survey indicates an expected partisan divide, with two-thirds of Democrats supportive of the Obama plan. That number drops to 51% among independents and down to 35% among Republicans. Hispanics questioned in the poll support the proposal by a 54%-43% margin.

Even though a majority back the President's proposal, only a third of Americans give Obama a thumbs up on how he's handling the issue of undocumented immigrants entering the country. While that's nothing to brag about, only 23% of those questioned say they approve of how congressional Republicans are dealing with the crisis. Even Republicans are divided (48% approval – 45% disapproval) on how federal lawmakers from their own party are handling the issue.

Battle lines drawn in immigration debate

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted July 9-13, with 1,016 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

As far as racism, smith. One needs to occasionally get off the fence and put one's toes in the water to determine how hot or cold the water actually is.

That;s the tricky thing abuot racism Lynda, even if you stuck yur foot in the water you may think it is tepid while someone else may think it's boiling hot.
That toe's gotta be just the right color, or at the very least you have to approach the water with an open mind.
Remember that old movie about the man who painted himself Black and went around living in various parts of the South?
It would take that kind of extreme action by some on this site in order for them to fully comprehend what's been going on in this country vis-à-vis THIS President since before his inauguration.
They would of course have to be willing subjects however.

Obama is bad. The GOP is worse. We know that.
Wouldn't this be a good time for the GOP to show that they have some ideas and mighty be capable of providing some leadership? I guess it's easier to just say NO to whatever Obama says and do nothing constructive.

And the Dems in Congress get a thumbs up because...? I have heard any solutions coming from Harry Reid, and the fews Dems I have heard are chastising Obama for not going to the border or doing more. That would seem to indicate everyone is getting a thumbs down...

GOP is racist. Gop "war on women". Democrat talking points. Comes from the likes of Nancy Pelosi and her ilk. Sounds like she has sucked in the 24/7ers and "gang" on this site. Believe what promotes your cause "lefties"...but don't show any facts. Now, talk to the hand...I'm off for another 5 days of business.

LOL Did you really say "gang"? Well, here's another name to add to the list. "CryBabies", have a safe trip.

Girl, you can’t make some of these people up.
Sniffit’s post left nothing to the imagination however.
I am hoping to Bob almighty that tom l/Tom L/ jennifer hasn’t also morphed into smith, but I must admit that these recent postings by smith have me concerned.

Me too DM but I don't really care, I've been dealing with thinly veiled racism disguised as any and everything else since I was 15 years old. Granted most kept it under control until 08 unless there was a group of them like the klan. But it's always been there. As for smith, I'm through. I would hope he will never address me again. I have his number. No matter how he tries to hide it.

dissonant, take both positions at once, radicalized, extremist, bitter, hyperbolic blanket criticism of EVERY SINGLE THING HE DOES NO MATTER WHAT"
    ----
But you do that all the time just on the opposite side. The fact that you have no issues with the NSA and drones shows how you only support him no matter what. And I call bull that you are fine with a cogent argument against Obama because that's just not the case. No matter what the topic, you always refer to the demographic Armageddon and always refer to it. What I believe I hAve noticed time and again is an over sensitivity to the topic and an immediate assumption of bigotry or racism. This is not to say there isn't racism and it's not to say that some of the push against Obama isn't seeded in racism, but nowhere near the extent to which you attribute it to. And you do no favors in making it better because of your cries of "wolf" every time.

Don't you love how everything boils down to race with liberals. Give me a break. I do not even know anyone who cares what color anyone is anymore. Its absurd. But your right about one thing – I can't stand Obama but it has nothing to do with the color of his skin. ... .... ...
    ------------------------–
I don't think that they are accusing every conservative of being a racist. I'm thinking that they're pointing to people like Newt Gingrich who made his remark about Obama having same the mindset as a group of long dead African rebels. That remark was plainly racist. Just as his calling the president demeaning and insulting names, instead of referring to Obama by name. Michelle Bachmann's "gangsta president" are clearly racially insensitive, if not outright racist.

They both ran for President in 2012, and they both lead the polls at one point or another....by virtue of these exact remarks that they made. So, anyone who says that there racism is not commonplace on the right is n denial.

Obviously they only asked democrats in that poll because every other poll shows that 76% of Americans do not support the 3.7 billion dollars plan.

There is NO ONE who has a solution to the issue of illegal immigration. Just like there is no one who has a solution to the use of illegal drugs. Both have one thing in common. The government is trying to stop people from doing what they want to do.

Throwing money at a problem will not solve it. Bigotous behavior, waring between people with different ideas only makes the situation a greater mess. The fact is that some people need help while others only want a free ride. The border crisis is almost as serious as the welfare state which has been created through catering to potential voters, giving people who do not WANT to work or earn their own income hand outs to the point where USA is so far in debt we have almost no chance at coming out of it. Do the homework folks and it will lead you to the same truth. Hate eachother for differing views if you have to but ask yourself, how does any of that create real sollutions to the nightmarish crisis we face as a nation, as a civilization. Government should be FOR the people BY the people, which it no longer is in the United States. Policies are created and enforced with no regard to the public view, created by agencies brought into being by government (agencies which act with complete disregard for what is right in many many cases, for their own benefit, for the profit of select and small groups of people). Your country, my country, OUR country has been looted and corrupted beyond redemption. What is the next step.......

Actually DM the movie they should see is Watermelon Man. Where a bigot woke up black one morning. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. That's my wish for America. If not that then a mixed race grandchild ought to open their eyes up wide.

He has honesty issuers, too. He tries to say he is a moderate when he so clearly is not. He also talks about the repubs having "conspiracy" issues and then throws out conspiracy theories like he has been peddling now for the past couple of days. He's not very self aware.

The rate of economic, communication and life style change has quicken to such a pace that all members of the boomer generation and many from X have no concept of how the current world really works. Our tradition of electing the 50 plus crowd from these groups is beginning to tell on the nation and the world. If we continue to elect representatives from these age groups we will get more of the same from them. All the 60, 70 and 80 year olds need to be removed from the House and the Senate. They can stay in the Judiciary or Executive. We need to elect a 30 to 40 somthing mixed group of Dems and Repubs to office. Then we will see some cooperation and problem solving.

Most disapprove on how Congress is handling the situation. You mean NOT handling because Congress does NOTHING. Ordinarily I'm in favor of the government doing nothing or very little since they usually screw it up, but in the case of illegal aliens (NOT immigrants) they HAVE to act, and it is criminal that they haven't. This latest influx is directly related to this inaction as illegals see this weakness as something to exploit. Democrat Republican, I don't care which side of the aisle: 1. Get the border under control NOW, and 2. Decide on what to do about the illegals already here, and ENFORCE THE LAW. Otherwise, why should any American obey any law when you allow these people to so blatantly ignore it???
