Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

Washington (CNN) - It's one of the hottest national debates this summer: What to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S.

A new national poll indicates that a majority of Americans approve of President Barack Obama's short term remedy, but most give the President and his GOP critics in Congress a thumbs down on how they're handling the crisis along the country's southern border.

According to an ABC News/Washington Post survey released Tuesday, 53% support the White House plan to spend $3.7 billion to immediately deal with the situation, with 43% saying they disapprove of the proposal. The survey indicates an expected partisan divide, with two-thirds of Democrats supportive of the Obama plan. That number drops to 51% among independents and down to 35% among Republicans. Hispanics questioned in the poll support the proposal by a 54%-43% margin.

Even though a majority back the President's proposal, only a third of Americans give Obama a thumbs up on how he's handling the issue of undocumented immigrants entering the country. While that's nothing to brag about, only 23% of those questioned say they approve of how congressional Republicans are dealing with the crisis. Even Republicans are divided (48% approval – 45% disapproval) on how federal lawmakers from their own party are handling the issue.

Battle lines drawn in immigration debate

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted July 9-13, with 1,016 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

@Silence- Thank you for proving my point. The GOP is not 100% one race and the Dems have a majority of a race just like the GOP.

All I hear is hate. Most of these children are not even Mexicans, they are from South America. But most of you are just filled with hate you fail to see what the real issues are. You all act like Natzis!

dissonant, take both positions at once, radicalized, extremist, bitter, hyperbolic blanket criticism of EVERY SINGLE THING HE DOES NO MATTER WHAT"
But you do that all the time just on the opposite side. The fact that you have no issues with the NSA and drones shows how you only support him no matter what. And I call bull that you are fine with a cogent argument against Obama because that's just not the case. ... ... ...
Ah, the NSA. I've been waiting and waiting for you, or smith, to blast the NSA again following Snowden's recent releases that clearly demonstrate that the NSA did exactly what it denied being able to do, which was having the ability to intercept private emails between private individuals. Snowden released tens of thousands of emails, which contained everything from baby pictures to family tragedies.

How come you two guys are not howling about those revelations of NSA snooping on private U.S. citizens? I suppose that you haven't heard about this release late last week and over the weekend. Huh? I find it amazing that the entire right wing has not heard about Snowden's emails, either. I can tell you why no one is making any loud noises about the revelations ... .. ... because the most recent email is dated 2008. Nothing that he has released was collected while Pres. Obama was in office. That's why not.

The GOP is not 100% one race and the Dems have a majority of a race just like the GOP.
The Democrats have the majority of VOTES from Blacks, but there are as many White Democrats as there are Black Democrats I am willing to bet.
BTW the Democrats got 70+ % of the ASIAN vote in 2012, so let's throw them in the mix.
With the GOP the numbers are quite stilted.
The reason? The GOP is showing itself to be less and less inclusive of anyone that doesn't look like MOST of it's members, women and Gays included.

@Lynda-Being pro-choice, pro-amnesty after the border is secured, thinks marriage should be abolished, thinks the GOP is corrupt, against citizens united, believes religon play a part in GOP politics and so on. I doubt I would be welcome in the GOP party.

Oh, hey. I too can say I am for or against one thing after another. Too often the way one votes tells a different story. But, then again, I probably don't have to explain that to you. You're fully aware of it yourself.

Building a wall/fence to stop illegal immigration is like drinking whiskey to treat an abscessed tooth. Need to stop dealing with the symptoms and work on fixing the source of the problem.

I've got a poll. Instead of taking a poll of congress as a whole, divide it up into 4 different votes. Always have readily available House Republicans, House Democrats, Senate Republicans, and Senate Democrats polls fresh and on hand to see exactly what America feels about each section individually, instead of all together. The Republicans have been pulled down for way too long now by the Democrats. It's time to face the music.

@Tom l- Rudy has severe case of denial and he knows he`s wrong. If this isn`t the case the guy has terrible memory issues.

He has honesty issuers, too. He tries to say he is a moderate when he so clearly is not. He also talks about the repubs having "conspiracy" issues and then throws out conspiracy theories like he has been peddling now for the past couple of days. He's not very self aware.
Honesty issues? I paraphrase what someone says and you guys call me liar for not using an exact quote? And now you want to accuse me of having honesty issues? You post under multiple names, and want to accuse someone else of having honesty issues?

Let's be honest then, you guys are extremists. I have a strong dislike of extremists, which does not make me a hard core liberal.

"This is not to say there isn't racism and it's not to say that some of the push against Obama isn't seeded in racism..."

Pretty nice, coming from someone who uses racially insensitive language in their posts and instead of apologizing or even acknowledging it... you pretend it's no big deal. Racism denial is the new racism...
I read in the paper today that 2 cops (one the Chief) in a Florida town were uncovered in an FBI investigation to be members of the KKK... the town was shocked.
    I wasn't.
Many folks on here wouldn't be.
Obama and Holder I'm sure weren't.
Many folks (like yourself) will pooh pooh the investigation, claim it was an Obama/Pelosi/Reid/Holder conspiracy to blah, blah, blah, or act like you never heard of the KKK.
Your racism, along with your rwnj 'clan' buddies on here, is blatant... daily (you know who you are, because many of you are the same individual. tom i, you get to name all the people to the straw man 'gang' you created on here, so I get to self appoint myself in naming you the Grand Wizard of 'the clan' on here.)
You laugh and poke fun at Sniffit ALL the time for his calling you and your clan out for your constant dog whistles (some not so subtle, like the 'fried chicken' remark from the rwnj lady yesterday) on here. You want to try and be clandestinely racist (to support your denials of racism, "Who me?",) but I have yet to see any (not one) of your self appointed members of your self-created 'gang' ever be involved with the racist comments on here (you know... the one's that don't exist), yet you laugh about it with the rest of the clan in your tongue in cheek, "who me?", "what racism, that is a Democratic ploy?" "Okay, maybe a little, but not me!" nonsense.
You belong to the party who posts racists comments on here.
You carry water for these same people who make rasicts comments on here and in the media.
Denying this, minimizing this, or otherwise trying to separate yourself from this is futile. You use racially insensitive language and then make the weak argument that calling someone ' your Boy' is in no way racist (walk into a bar on the south side of Chicago and use that word if it isn't racist... you wouldn't dare, because you KNOW it is).
Deny it, blame others, project it onto us... do whatever you want tom I (you're the big free thinking individual on here- as you spout the same old rwnj mantra day in and day out)... but don't expect us to buy into your BS.

A clan, is a clan, is a klan....

The border isn't "secured" because people like you cannot tell us how to measure it.

If you do not want "amnesty", then what do you suggest? i don't like the idea of amnesty, either. Are we to find all of the people in this country illegally and deport them? The mass deportation solution seems to be one of the most popular among those on the right. But, how would that work in practice? It would be horrible to watch armed commando teams going house to house looking for people. Yet, that is exactly what the right wing is yelling for.

Obama should have done this years ago. One of the reasons Obama’s poll numbers are so low is he keeps letting Republicans throw dirt on him without responding. He needs to fight back, and it seems like he’s finally gotten the message. The Republicans’ strategy has been to obstruct everything Obama tries to do, then whine about what a failure Obama has been. They never offer rational alternative ideas or even try to reach a compromise. Obama needs to keep hammering that message — it’s the party of “no” that’s making a mess of things, not him.

He would never have been reelected. The MSM would have painted him as the "Angry black man" and he would have scared many whites into not supporting him. He knew this that's why he acted the way he did during his first term. That's what he meant by saying he would have more flexibility after the election. It's ok for some to be forceful but not us. We're considered angry.
