Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

Washington (CNN) - It's one of the hottest national debates this summer: What to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S.

A new national poll indicates that a majority of Americans approve of President Barack Obama's short term remedy, but most give the President and his GOP critics in Congress a thumbs down on how they're handling the crisis along the country's southern border.

According to an ABC News/Washington Post survey released Tuesday, 53% support the White House plan to spend $3.7 billion to immediately deal with the situation, with 43% saying they disapprove of the proposal. The survey indicates an expected partisan divide, with two-thirds of Democrats supportive of the Obama plan. That number drops to 51% among independents and down to 35% among Republicans. Hispanics questioned in the poll support the proposal by a 54%-43% margin.

Even though a majority back the President's proposal, only a third of Americans give Obama a thumbs up on how he's handling the issue of undocumented immigrants entering the country. While that's nothing to brag about, only 23% of those questioned say they approve of how congressional Republicans are dealing with the crisis. Even Republicans are divided (48% approval – 45% disapproval) on how federal lawmakers from their own party are handling the issue.

Battle lines drawn in immigration debate

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted July 9-13, with 1,016 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

@rs-So we just stick our heads in the sand and and forget about it. Your right, the GOP won`t fund it because they want their votes just like the Dems do.
So it really is just politics for the GOP- that's what you're saying? Then we're in agreement.

On your first point- no, we just don't give up. But jeez man- the "wall" is a straw dog- it can't be built, it'll cost a fortune, it'll take years- and it won't work. So we have to be mature adults and take it off of the table.

The real solution will require Congress and the do-nothing GOP to actually do some work for a change- why do you think they push "secure the border"?

These Illegals need to be thrown out of our Nation; If you live is Southern Arizona you can't even leave your ranch house to go to town without one of these Illegals breaking into your home, barn or pump house. These Illegals are noting but a gang of criminals. The have NO business here and need to be thrown out and thrown out now!

In the midterm election that is coming up in November remember this issue and the politicians that kiss up to these Illegals. Get rid of them. Kick them out too..........

Do you remember when Bush was president, that whenever there was some poll that showed how much everyone hated and disagreed with him that the media insisted that everyone hated and disagreed with the house and senate democrats even more? Yeah me either, even though in 2007 Congress' approval rating was 21%. The media bias is so apparent if you haven't pulled the wool over your eyes.

I just read on CNN of a Black Woman who abandoned here child on a New York subway platform. She is Now going to be charged with several Crimes? Yet the people of Mexico and Central America can come to our boarder and just dump their children? They will charged a Black Woman with dumping her child and prosecute her but not the swarms that invaded our southern boarder?

Why are not they being arrested along with their children, jailed and charged with a crime? The essentially did the very same thing. The Black Woman did as She is going to go to prison. This mob of criminals and riffraff that is invading our Nation needs to be turned back at the border and turned back now.

There are thousands of troops at a fort in southern Arizona that have little to do but polish their boots and clean their rifles. Put these soldiers on the boarder to patrol and apprehend these criminal that violate the integrity of our Nation.

I give the president a thumbs up on how he has tried to handle this boarder mess. Starting from the immigration bill that should have passed LAST YEAR, but due to HOUSE REPUBS, AGAIN....... ZERO ZERO ZERO ZERO ZERO......we would not be in this mess had Repubs done their job, again. Kick out Repubs this November as they are ruining this great nation.

    ps. I am an independent.

It's Obama's fault they are here to begin with!!! If he didn't stop deporting people via executive fiat – then these people would never have started showing up. Elections have consequences. Likewise policies have consequences..... and we the American taxpayer are on the hook for it.
We have Americans starving in our own communities and we're teetering on the brink of financial insolvency under a 17 trillion dollar debt burden. But Obama wants to spend billions feeding and educating these people while 20+ million Americans are out of work and going hungry.
NICE JOB O! 2016 can't come soon enough.

I suggest that your town needs to stop cutting taxes and start hiring more sheriffs, deputies, or police officers. But, hey, that might mean that your property taxes would get raised in order to pay for it. Now that's a problem. it's against some folks religion to ever raise taxes. Oh well, I guess common sense is scarce out there.

Okay, Boehner has announced that he has an emergency funding bill in the works.

Does anyone out there believe that the raucous caucus is going to pass it with a repeal ACA amendment? Anyone?

No, he is trying to send them back. The law (passed by the Bush Administration in 2008) calls for a hearing for all children under 18 who cross the border by themselves.

This requires money to hold and feed them until the hearings.

Money which the Republicans won't authorize for a law that George W. Bush advocated and passed!

"Pretty nice, coming from someone who uses racially insensitive language in their posts and instead of apologizing or even acknowledging it... you pretend it's no big deal. Racism denial is the new racism..."

So now I finally get it. I called you "your boy" and you took that as some sort of racist comment. No, it was not racist and it didn't even occur to me – if it offended you then you should understand that there was zero racial thoughts behind it and it's just a term me and my friends use all the time. Good grief. I appreciate your wanting to call me a member of the klan. It just shows how childish you really are. That's pretty funny to me since I would be a pretty horrible klansman unless they are now taking Jews (and they probably need a special exception for me since I also have a black girlfriend for over 6 years). It's so ironic for you to try and claim racism when you have no understanding nor knowledge of the Holocaust based on several of your posts in which you try to claim that the TEA Party is just like the Nazis – so let me inform you of your "insensitive language". When you make that comparison you are insulting the 10 million (6 million of them were Jews) people that were killed at the hands of the Nazis and for you to just haphazardly throw that out there actually does show your lack of understanding and insensitivity towards Jews.

So, other than my inadvertent and totally taken out of context "racist" comment where I referred to you as "your boy" while commenting to Rudy, please tell me about all of my other racist comments. Fact is, you have none because there are none.

The Republican Governor of Louisiana is Piyush Jindal. He calls himself "Bobby" Jindal, but he was born Piyush and changed his name and religious affiliation from Hindu to Christian before he ran for governor.
When Piyush was in utero, his mother flew to the United States so little Piyush could be born here and automatically become an American Citizen.. There is a loop hole in the US Immigration Law that allows foreigners to do that.
Now Piyush Jindal is taking a Republican hard line, Right Wing position on those who also want their children to be American Citizens but do not have the money or connections to fly here.
Where is the justice? The rich fly in for back door citizenship for their children. The poor die in the Sonoran desert trying to find a better life. We need a comprehensive bi partisan Immigration Reform bill . One was passed by Republicans and Democrats in the Senate. John Boehner, who is at the beck and call of the right Wing elements in the Republican Party, will not allow that bill to come to a vote in the House of Representatives where it would pass.. John Boehner and the Republican Congress will not allow the Democratic process to move forward in a bi partisan manner.
Meanwhile vigilante mobs of Republican "christians" blockade and terrify busses of frightened children seeking refuge from the murder and chaos of their homelands. Meanwhile, Republican hate radio dehumanizes and demonizes Hispanics and "Liberals" who offer humanitarian help to the oppressed. Meanwhile, Republican talking points try to blame it all on the President, even the 2008 law signed by George W. Bush which requires that each of these immigrants be given a hearing. before being sent home.

"There will be no criminal charges for former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine over the use of customer funds leading up to collapse of MF Global."
Thanks for posting more obvious, easily proven lies. Seems like that is all the lefties got these days. I guess they learn well from the Liar of the Year."
That's because the investigations found that the firm's collapse and bankruptcy was not the result of fraud but poor risk controls and systems in the firm. Because that's not criminal, there is a massive civil suit by the gov't to deal with it. Is Corzine a good guy? No. Are his hands dirty and his motives suspect? Sure. Was what happened unethical and bad mojo and evidence that he's a horrible person? Sure. Did he do anything illegal? No. Is the federal gov't taking action to address the problem? YES. It's not doing nothing. It's doing what is available as a remedy.
Now, let's talk about criminalizing what actually WAS the problem and wrong and unethical about Corzine's firm and its behavior: you come let me know as soon as you've obtained Teatroll Command's approval to support that kind of financial system reform.

Nice try but laws already exist to cover the illegal acts that were perpetrated. Clients money was supposed to be segregated and untouchable. But it got taken, stolen, and Corzine was the one running the place.

Democrats would never allow one of their rich golden child contributors to get arrested and do hard time for stealing billions, especially when Democrats are running the Justice Dept. They are surely hoping to see a lot of that money come flowing back into the coffers of Democrat candidates. Oh yes, the circle of life in the corrupt organized criminal enterprise known as the Democrat Party.

Zack says: "It's Obama's fault they are here to begin with!!!" I still don't get this statement. The illegals came here because they did. They came in an ocean of humanity, enough to overwhelm the resistance. Obama is upholding what it says on the Statue Of Liberty. All I see is that he is obeying the law as written. But HIS fault? Sorry, can't but that.

The polls seems valid, both parties are a massive failure on illegal immigration. The best Obama can do to stop the inflow of illegals is to send a message for the easily duped, like the easily duped in the US, saying that we enforce our immigration laws while he has 11+ million illegals still living the good life here, while working here, making 100 times more than any jobs in Central America. It might work, on the extremely easily duped. There is no solution for illegal immigration, as long as we have capitalism there will always be illegal workers. Getting the cheapest labor possible in order to maximize profits is just part of capitalism, even if it's illegal. We did have slavery for about 100 years, and that was just cheap labor. We would have slavery again, if we didn't enforce our anti-slavery laws, like we don't enforce anti-illegal immigration laws. The propaganda will always be heavy for more cheap labor, like we are a Nation of illegal immigrants, some are, but most are descendents of ancestors who came here legally, or before there was immigration laws. Very few are descendent from illegal parents. Bringing in millions of illegal workers does not benefit the economy, if it were that easy Countries with the most cheap labor would boom, the US would never achieve anything, because there are too many workers that get paid well, or a large middle class. It is still based primarily on consumers. Illegal immigration won't save Social Security, SS is a percent of income, it's an arithmetic problem, not a body count type of thing. The best thing for SS is to increase paycheck amounts, doubling the amount people get paid would double the amount paid to SS.

Where is this proof that the GOP or Non-Dems are racist? Do you have anything to back up your claims?
I think that a more apropo question would be: "Where the hell have you been these past 5 1/2 years my friend?".
Ever hear of the GOP's "Birthers"?

Let's stick to the issue here yea it's easy to blame sitting President Obama for just about everything some of you wingnuts can think of. How did 11 million illegal immigrants get in this country it has to go back years didn't happen in his two terms either. Let's stop pointing fingers and do something about it,,,but no matter you all will find blame on Obama for what ever. I'm telling if a republican president is elected next time around God help us..all going on in the world...he wouldn't have a clue...Paul...Cruz...please REALLY

Has anyone bother to ask how Native Americans feel about this? I would think folks from south and Central American ( they are NOT all Mexicans like some of these racist fools who look like Klan members call them) are probably related to them much more than European white folks who came from those white countries across the pond and destroyed their lives.,
