Poll: Immigration tops list of most important issues

(CNN) - The percentage of Americans who say that immigration is the nation's top problem has soared over the past month, according to a new national survey.

A Gallup poll released Wednesday indicates that 17% of the public says that immigration is the most important issue right now, up 12-percentage points from June.

The survey comes as Americans debate what to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S, which has been a top story in the media the past few weeks.

Dissatisfaction with the government (16%), the economy (15%), and jobs (14%) rank just below immigration. No other issue offered cracked double digits in the new poll (health care came in at 8%).

"This is not the first time that immigration has spiked in the public's consciousness. Most recently, Gallup found the issue increasing to 10% in 2010, at a time when a new immigration law in Arizona was making news. And prior to that, it increased twice in 2006, to 15% or higher, amid congressional debate over immigration reform," said a release by Gallup.

Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

The survey indicated a partisan divide on the importance of the issue, with 23% of Republicans, but only 11% of Democrats, saying that immigration is the most pressing issue facing the nation right now.

The survey suggests that crisis along the southern border could be an important factor in this year's midterm elections.

"Each previous spike in mentions of immigration as the nation's top problem was fairly short-lived. But with no solution to the current crisis in sight, and less than four months to go before the midterm elections, it is easy to believe the issue could still be a factor come November," wrote Gallup.

The Gallup poll was conducted July 7-10, with 1,013 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error was plus or minus four percentage points.

The fact that we have this happening a few months before a national election is no coincidence in my book. The Obama administration has proven over and over that it is only good at ONE THING, ginning up confrontational disasters like this to add to the Democrat Party's standard talking points. In this case it is how the Republicans hate hispanics because they want the laws of our nation enforced and our borders secured. As they said before, never let a good crisis go to waste, even if you have to create one yourself, which is exactly what Obama did with this.

The rude lady pointing her finger should be deported back to Ireland. The Republican led house has done nothing to move the United States forward. What are they afraid of ? Republicans won't see the White House for another 500 years.

look at that picture... americans at each others throats. exactly what the democrat party wants and tries to do. divide and conquer. pit one segment against another. democrats will only be happy when the entire country falls apart, just like others countries have done. the usa destroyed, mission accomplished for the far left. and as predicted, it will be done from within.

"immigration crisis" = "most of the people coming here fit into demographics that vote Dem"

    Please proceed, GOPers/Teatrolls, please proceed...

Why aren't the governments of Mexico & Honduras doing something to decrease crime & poverty. As these illegals come to the U.S. they will be bringing that gang mentality with them. Help them yes but there has to be a limit. If they become citizens don't extend benefits to the enire family.

I don't think the democrats are going to get near this before November. Democrats are all for open borders with no enforcement so unfortunately it may be a pressing issue but not one they want to discuss.

""Listen, if you’re 14, 15, 16, 17 years old and you’re coming from a country that’s gang infested, particularly with MS-13-types. That is the most aggressive of all the street gangs...When you have those types coming across the border, they’re not children at that point. These kids have been brought up in a culture of thievery. A culture of murder, of rape, all those types of things. And now we are going to infuse them into the American culture, it’s just ludicrous.” -Rep. Rich Nugent (R-FL)

There is ZERO evidence of that and certainly none he would be privy to.

But yes, you probably already guessed it...this racist conservative jackhole does have a moustache and a razor sharp side-part on his dome and looks vaguely like a certain someone.

Okay "Christian" America. This is your chance to see if you really believe & try to follow the Words of Jesus Christgiven to him by the Father & transcribed in the Four Gospels , originally in the exact language of Greek.
    "When I was a stranger, you did/did not welcome me".Matthew 25,35.
Some say this is satisfied under the Current Immigration Laws. When Jesus answered the Call of the Father, how much did he give ? Take a look at a Catholic Crucifix; arms stretched out. Every drop of his blood

First, tell me a date prior to yesterday where you claimed to be an independent. You need to first prove your own claim. I'm not sure if you ever made one that I've ever seen. You claim to be an independent. Most Libertarians regard themselves as independents. Just ask tom.

@Silence-Uh, Im an Independent. So using typical blaming republican fodder won`t work because I blame bothe dems and repubs.

Yeah, not so much. If you think about it, it has been the Right throwing hissies and demonstrating everything and frankly, acting very un-American. Whether it is parading around with guns; screaming at little kids (and in Arizona, our esteemed lawmakers can't tell the difference between immigrants and boy scouts on buses); un-American leeches like Bundy and his cop-shooting militia, I think you'll find it is the Right which is agitating- not the Democrats.

There is a difference between Illegal and Legal immigration. All sides
of the immigration debate need to recognize that distinction in order
to hold productive debate. This is supposed to be a nation of laws.No
illegal immigrants should be given citizenship. We have immigration
laws that must be followed, and following those laws is the pathway to
being a legal resident in the U.S

First of all, these kids aren't FROM Mexico, so they have little in this. As far as Honduras or Guatemala or El Salvador- they are failed states run by gangs- that's why there is this humanitarian crisis, that's why these kids are here.
BTW- NO ONE is talking about granting these kids citizenship- except maybe Fox News- which as usual is making stuff up as they go.

    ---------------
Yes the Tea Party is always instigating for an armed take over.
But that's not the way this country works. You cannot just revolt when you don't agree.

If this is what you think, are you saying that liberals should have banded together and revolted when W was killing people in Iraq for no reason, or liberals should have banded together and stormed the Whitehouse when Reagan almost caused WW3? Is that really the country you want to live in?

George Washington settled this back in the 1790's in the Whiskey Rebellion. We are a nation of laws, not a nation that uses armed violence when we don't like the way things are at the moment.
