Poll: Immigration tops list of most important issues

(CNN) - The percentage of Americans who say that immigration is the nation's top problem has soared over the past month, according to a new national survey.

A Gallup poll released Wednesday indicates that 17% of the public says that immigration is the most important issue right now, up 12-percentage points from June.

The survey comes as Americans debate what to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S, which has been a top story in the media the past few weeks.

Dissatisfaction with the government (16%), the economy (15%), and jobs (14%) rank just below immigration. No other issue offered cracked double digits in the new poll (health care came in at 8%).

"This is not the first time that immigration has spiked in the public's consciousness. Most recently, Gallup found the issue increasing to 10% in 2010, at a time when a new immigration law in Arizona was making news. And prior to that, it increased twice in 2006, to 15% or higher, amid congressional debate over immigration reform," said a release by Gallup.

Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

The survey indicated a partisan divide on the importance of the issue, with 23% of Republicans, but only 11% of Democrats, saying that immigration is the most pressing issue facing the nation right now.

The survey suggests that crisis along the southern border could be an important factor in this year's midterm elections.

"Each previous spike in mentions of immigration as the nation's top problem was fairly short-lived. But with no solution to the current crisis in sight, and less than four months to go before the midterm elections, it is easy to believe the issue could still be a factor come November," wrote Gallup.

The Gallup poll was conducted July 7-10, with 1,013 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error was plus or minus four percentage points.

You've already lost the debate, mate. You've been had. The whole point was to entice you into demonstrating your extremism, which you've done by so emphatically insisting that you are not a moderate. Since you are not a Republican, not a Democrat, but an independent who is not a moderate, where does that leave you? There is only one spot left on the map, and that would be the extreme, as in the extreme right. You've proven that, too.

BTW, if you dislike NSA snooping so much, how come you haven't made any noises about the tens and tens of thousands of personal emails of U.S. citizens that Snowden released over the weekend, which the NSA had collected while claiming that they couldn't or didn't do it? Why aren't you upset about that demonstration of NSA bad behavior? Hmm? Why so quiet?

    Ayuh.
Folks going at ech other like animals over this and other issues.
It appears that the most dysfunctional Congress ever, the continuous harping and slanted reporting of our news media outlets, and the Right-wing misinformation machine doubling down on their spins and lies is finally having it's intended effect.
People are at each other's throats.
It is taking it's toll on folks on this site as well.
There are those here doing their level best to discredit other's viewpoints by "jokingly" and not so jokingly accusing them of being drunks, threatening folks with violence, and being liars. This is all done with an eye towards silencing those that would threaten their narrative, their beliefs and their perceived status amongst us.
    Just like in real-life...

Finger wagging nose picking is fine by me. I only ask that they stick to their own noses without dragging everyone else's nose into the fray.

Who'd have thought that yesterday's tea bags would be replaced by today's nose pickers. Ah, well. GOPerville: land of pointed fingers.

Look at that picture... Americans at each others throats. Exactly what the rethug/tp party wants and tries to do. divide and conquer; pit one segment against another. The reds will only be happy when the entire country falls apart, just like others countries have done; the USA destroyed – mission accomplished for the far right and as predicted, it will be done from within.

Closed? How come the Tea Party House hasn't passed legislation funding the "Great Wall of the Rio Grande" yet? They've been procrastinating on it for over years now. If they want something done, everyone knows that revenue related bills must originate in the House. What are they waiting for? A crisis that they can blame on Democrats?

Yeah, not so much. If you think about it, it has been the Right throwing hissies and demonstrating everything and frankly, acting very un-American. Whether it is parading around with guns; screaming at little kids (and in Arizona, our esteemed lawmakers can't tell the difference between immigrants and boy scouts on buses); un-American leeches like Bundy and his cop-shooting militia, I think you'll find it is the Right which is agitating- not the Democrats.
    =================================================================================
... and then they make the circular argument that it is the left that has caused them to be so agitated and upset. Actually, it has been their own leaders on right wing talk radio, and most right wing media as a whole, that has them so fired up.

Gosh, Dominican mama. You're reminding me of my grade school days when we all grouped together to be part of the in-crowd. By middle school the lines were drawn and everyone knew where they were placed in the pecking order. Towards the end of high school, I gave up caring who was "cool" (and who wasn't) and went about my daily business regardless.

GOPerville and its minions are still fighting that "I'm the coolest of the cool" grade school battle, eh?

  19. OBAMA - THE OPEN BORDERS PRESIDENT

We don't need more fencing – we have the technology now to make that happen. Even if they approved more fencing there is little chance it would be completed as was the case last time. As is always the case with Obama its what he does not what he says. He may say he is for securing the border but he is not going to unless he has to. Border agents are now saying that most crossers are coming because they believe they can stay. You don't have to call it amnesty they just get to stay here ("permisos"-free stay) without any fear of deportation. Obama 2012 DACA was the invitation.

The only people in this country spreading the message that people can get to stay if they simply cross the border are those on the right, who've shouting it out for years.
