Poll: Immigration tops list of most important issues

(CNN) - The percentage of Americans who say that immigration is the nation's top problem has soared over the past month, according to a new national survey.

A Gallup poll released Wednesday indicates that 17% of the public says that immigration is the most important issue right now, up 12-percentage points from June.

The survey comes as Americans debate what to do about the influx of unaccompanied and undocumented children from Central America who are crossing from Mexico into the U.S, which has been a top story in the media the past few weeks.

Dissatisfaction with the government (16%), the economy (15%), and jobs (14%) rank just below immigration. No other issue offered cracked double digits in the new poll (health care came in at 8%).

"This is not the first time that immigration has spiked in the public's consciousness. Most recently, Gallup found the issue increasing to 10% in 2010, at a time when a new immigration law in Arizona was making news. And prior to that, it increased twice in 2006, to 15% or higher, amid congressional debate over immigration reform," said a release by Gallup.

Poll: Most give Obama, GOP in Congress, thumbs down on border crisis

The survey indicated a partisan divide on the importance of the issue, with 23% of Republicans, but only 11% of Democrats, saying that immigration is the most pressing issue facing the nation right now.

The survey suggests that crisis along the southern border could be an important factor in this year's midterm elections.

"Each previous spike in mentions of immigration as the nation's top problem was fairly short-lived. But with no solution to the current crisis in sight, and less than four months to go before the midterm elections, it is easy to believe the issue could still be a factor come November," wrote Gallup.

Complete Coverage: 2014 Midterm Elections

The Gallup poll was conducted July 7-10, with 1,013 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error was plus or minus four percentage points.

If the border is NOT closed........to illegals.......there will be a revolution in this country.
    -----
Yes the Tea Party is always instigating for an armed take over.
But that's not the way this country works. You cannot just revolt when you don't agree.

If this is what you think, are you saying that liberals should have banded together and revolted when W was killing people in Iraq for no reason, or liberals should have banded together and stormed the Whitehouse when Reagan almost caused WW3? Is that really the country you want to live in?

George Washington settled this back in the 1790's in the Whiskey Rebellion. We are a nation of laws, not a nation that uses armed violence when we don't like the way things are at the moment.

I can't see any reason why a woman like that one on the photo above behaving that way. America is a vast nation. It is not overpopulated like Gaza that you can't find an inch to place people. Why can't everyone mind own business and let these kids be placed somewhere. Greedy and selfishness never help anyone.

OBAMA – THE OPEN BORDERS PRESIDENT

We don't need more fencing – we have the technology now to make that happen. Even if they approved more fencing there is little chance it would be completed as was the case last time. As is always the case with Obama its what he does not what he says. He may say he is for securing the border but he is not going to unless he has to. Border agents are now saying that most crossers are coming because they believe they can stay. You don't have to call it amnesty they just get to stay here ("permisos"-free stay) without any fear of deportation. Obama 2012 DACA was the invitation.
    -----------–
    Chicken.

The only people in this country spreading the message that people can get to stay if they simply cross the border are those on the right, who've shouting it out for years.
    ___________

I know its hard for you to grasp but the truth hurts. The left wing who are all the Presidents friends and advisers do not want the border enforced or people deported. You can deny it as the President does. Take amnesty for example. I have no problem with Amnesty for certain people if laws are followed and plans are completed but lets not repeat this cycle over and over again. You will not see amnesty as a major proponent of the GOP immigration plan. You won't see liberals say. "Lets treat people kindly & fairly. Feed them, clothe them, give them medical assistance and send them home asap."

Gee Sorry Folks, but the Liberal agenda is about to implode. People are pissed. They don't buy all the Snake Oil that these border jumpers are refugees. If there was a humongous war in Central America they (you), might have a Case. Sonny Chapman is trying to pull the wool over our eyes by spouting Scripture (Musings) from the Bible that we HAVE to take in all these poor people. I would suggest the King Soloman Approach. Cut 'em off at the Pass.

Then this blonde witch of a reporter asked the sheriff if Barack Obama was behind the murders. He told her NO, the POTUS is not going around killing people just some idiots in Obama masks. BTW, if you dislike NSA snooping so much, how come you haven't made any noises about the tens and tens of thousands of personal emails of U.S. citizens that Snowden released over the weekend, which the NSA had collected while claiming that they couldn't or didn't do it? Why aren't you upset about that demonstration of NSA bad behavior? Hmm? Why so quiet?"

Denial of what facts. I've accepted the fact that you're not a moderate. I've always known it. I'm just letting everyone else in on it. What happened to your spoutrage over the NSA? Snowden released 100,000 emails, 80% of which were from innocent citizens with no ties to terrorism. How come you're not complaining about the NSA? Hmm? How come no one on the right is complaining about the tens of thousands emails Snowden released? Hmm?

"I know its hard for you to grasp but the truth hurts."

Filed under "how to tell if a conservative is about to deluge you with counterfactual mumbo jumbo."

"The left wing who are all the Presidents friends and advisers do not want the border enforced or people deported. You can deny it as the President does."

You mean the POTUS and advisors and administration that all made record deportations every year, increased the deportation of criminals by 70% and have increased the number of deported people who are "charged" by 90% such that if they are found here again within 5 years, they can face incarceration and fines? Of course they deny what you're saying. The facts prove you're either lying or totally uninformed.

"Take amnesty for example. I have no problem with Amnesty for certain people if laws are followed and plans are completed but lets not repeat this cycle over and over again."

That's what the bipartisan Senate immigration reform bill does. THIRTEEN YEARS to become a citizen and they have to pay all back taxes and fines and go through a whole big process. And yes, it also doubles patrol on the border (i.e., doubles Obama's record highest number of border patrolmen in our history), provides funding for high-tech border patrol and builds a $3B fence. Yet you no doubt vehemently oppose it because the GOP/Teatrolls tell you to.

"You will not see amnesty as a major proponent of the GOP immigration plan."

Certainly not as THEY define "amnesty." They will then promptly define "amnesty" as whatever solution the Dems propose, no matter what it is (see bipartisan Senate immigration reform bill).

"You won't see liberals say. "Lets treat people kindly & fairly. Feed them, clothe them, give them medical assistance and send them home asap.""

You just paraphrased everything that almost EVERYONE has been saying, including Obama, and it was the entire point of Obama's request for $3.7B in funding. It takes a LOT of people and funding to follow the procedures set forth in these laws. If you want it any quicker, you have to fund more people...judges, representatives, people to care for the unaccompanied minors, etc. It takes a lot of money to house and feed and care for these children in a humane manner while they're here. It takes a lot of people and money to search for their parents or arrange for the home governments to do so...if they even can.

You clearly know nothing whatsoever about what's going on in these countries. One can only hope that the conservative ideological purity inquisition purge-police achieve their goal of making the RWNJ bubble completely air tight. Your lack of information and understanding of this issue shows how close they're getting. You people seem to miss the point. It isnt about 50,000 kids, it isnt about "refugee or asylum" status, and it certainly isnt about a misconception over the Dream Act. Thats peanuts compared to the big picture. What this is about, and why it is UNSUSTAINABLE, is the 20-40 Million illegals aliens here already. That's a HUGE amount of people whom are essentially unknown; and cost the taxpayers $300 BILLION annually. In fact in Arizona, where the issue and debate has been increasingly fervent, its been costing the state $16Billion annually to deal with the problem! No wonder they're angry! Obama himself wanted to allocate 3.7Billion just to process/move 50,000 kids! This is an expensive and dangerous problem that needs to be addressed. The USA cannot afford, LITERALLY cannot afford this anymore, and we certainly have better things to spend our money on. Solution is simple; place a temporary halt to all immigration across the southern border, and begin massive sweeps across the nations interior. Once the situation is at sustainable levels, we open the doors again.
