Warren greeted by 2016 chants at progressive gathering

(CNN) - Sen. Elizabeth Warren received a standing ovation and chants of "run Liz run" as she took to the podium Friday at a major gathering of progressive leaders and activists.

While the freshman senator from Massachusetts has repeatedly said she isn't running for the White House in 2016, a group titled "ReadyforWarren" was out in force at the annual Netroots Nation conference, held this year in Detroit. As Warren was introduced at the event, supporters from the group unveiled a large "Run Liz Run" banner.

Netroots Nation's to-do list: Get Democrats to polls in November

Warren, smiling, quickly quieted the 2016 cheers, saying, "Sit down, sit down, sit down, come on, sit down."

The senator, a political rock star to many on the left, then proceeded to give a campaign-like address.

In her rousing but brief 17-minute speech, Warren used populist language to paint a picture of America as a land of inequality where "the game is rigged." And she asked the audience to join her in pushing back, saying "I'm fighting back. I'm ready to fight back. Are you ready to fight back?"

Early in her address, Warren pointed to her 2012 election victory over incumbent GOP Sen. Scott Brown, and to her key role during her time in President Barack Obama's administration in creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, saying those victories happened in part because of support from progressive activists.

She then spoke out on a number of issues pressing to the liberal base of the Democratic Party, issues that party leaders hope will increase Democratic turnout in November's midterm elections.

Warren called for an increase in the minimum wage, adding that "we believe that no one should work full time and still live in poverty."

And she pushed for income equality, saying to applause that "I can't believe I have to say this in 2014: We believe in equal pay for equal work, and we're willing to fight for it!"

Reacting to the Supreme Court's recent ruling throwing out the Obamacare contraceptive coverage mandate for certain businesses, she said "that women have a right to their bodies, we will overturn Hobby Lobby, and we will fight for it!"

As Warren departed the stage, actor and liberal activist Mark Ruffalo took to the podium.

"Wow, Elizabeth Warren," he said. "I mean, wow."

Warren, Biden and Clinton

On the scene while Warren spoke were trackers from the pro-GOP opposition research shop America Rising. The group, which has been targeting Hillary Clinton, has now put Warren on its radar.

Warren's speech came one day after Vice President Joe Biden touted his "progressive" credentials as he addressed the audience.

"I don't take a backseat to anyone when it comes to fighting some of the toughest progressive battles the country has seen," said the vice president, who is mulling another bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Biden touted his role in helping spur President Barack Obama to publicly endorse same sex marriage, saying he made "no apologies whatsoever" his May 2012 "Meet the Press" interview, which the White House has said pushed the process forward.

He also called climate change "the single greatest challenge to humanity today," and agreed with immigration protesters that the government should stop deporting some undocumented immigrants.

What would cause Hillary Clinton not to run in 2016

Clinton, who is in the middle of a book tour for her new memoir "Hard Choices," isn't attending Netroots Nation. She was invited but conference organizers told CNN that her team "declined is because she's not out on the political scene."

The former secretary of state's seriously considering another bid for the White House, and if she runs, as many expect she will, Clinton would instantly become the overwhelming front runner for the Democratic nomination.

While Clinton isn't in Detroit, an outside group that's urging her to run in 2016 will be there in force. Several members of Ready for Hillary are at the conference, holding a session on how grassroots activists have changed the political landscape, and hosting a party Friday night for Netroots Nation attendees.

Elizabeth Warren can't win the election. Republicans know it very well thats why they are trying very hard to promote her. She is not known at all and what she talks is a concern to those who are intellectual like her. Please don't distort the election which has already been won in my mind.

After 7-years of the "progressive recovery", Ms. Warren getting in the race could be the gift that keeps on giving for the GOP

That was Mississippi, it was two men, and it was GOP vs. tin foil hat all the way.
How come whenever there is cheating, lying, misogyny, or bigotry among conservatives, they always say someone else is doing it. That is like Putin now blaming everyone else in the world for violence. Dudes, we can see you!

Donna, the recent rulings giving corporations the rights of individuals overturns 100 year of precedent.
    --

Exactly what 100 year precedent was overturned? Corporations have always had many, not all, of the same rights as individuals. Private companies, family owned companies have always been run according to the values of the people that own them. The ONLY thing that has changed is now the federal government has stuck its big nose into the running of those companies with intrusive demands/mandates that over step their authority. But this is what happens when you let far left Democrats jam things down the throats of the American people.

"progressive recovery" = 8 years of record unemployment with little to no economic growth. record people on food stamps, poverty up, numbers working lowest since the 70's, kids living with their parents after college because they can't find jobs.

yeah, we need 8 more years of this. have we all lost our minds?

Serial fabricator (aka LIAR) 1%er Warren is all hype. She has never been FOR any American except businesses. I have to deal with the result of her increased bureaucracy. 1) it benefits no one other than the "Too Big To Fails"; 2) takes hours of wasted work time at work with, again, zero benefit; 3) created a HUGE overweening, unaccountable, overlapping, domineering and dominating bureaucracy. She is all hype and all fake. A nasty piece of work, a bureaucrat for bureaucrats. We need to retire her to her multi-million dollar homes on her huge government pension.

Republicans have more to worry about goint in to the 2016 election. Democrats have three good viable candidates in Clinton, Biden and Warren. It is a much more impressive field than the GOP has to offer.

What has Elizabeth Warren ever run or led successfully, besides her mouth?

After Obama, the American people are done with novelties and bloviating teleprompter idiots. Show me a track record of success if you want to apply for the toughest most demanding job on the planet.

So excited because she can become the first woman President AND the first NATIVE AMERICAN President, since she is 1/32 Cherokee. Does she still claim to be of Cherokee indian decent? I wonder if there is a race classification in the form to postulate for president, and what she will write down.

Yes, by all means! Let's try yet another liberal social experiment for our cherished Presidency since it worked out SO WELL the last 8 years. I don't care what her stance is, she's going to be liberal.

Women, by default, spend too much money and don't listen to others when they want something. Is that what we really need right now since America has been torn apart by heart-bleeders over the past two terms? We need Iron Fist, Strong, concern for infrastructure and true Americans – not finding more ways to give piles of cash away.

My vote is a resounding NO. Let's put this whole female president to rest until the country recovers from the last failed social experiment.

The Congress can pass a new law that overturns the SCOTUS. Civics 101. In the US, there is a balance of power among the three branches of government. It is a country of laws. Until the tin foil theocracy folks take over. Thank God that has not happened yet.

The SCOTUS ruled that employers had to conform to the ACA because it was a tax, and the government has the authority to tax businesses. The Hobby Lobby ruling effectively grants the company a tax amnesty because it is against their values to pay it.
