Warren greeted by 2016 chants at progressive gathering

(CNN) - Sen. Elizabeth Warren received a standing ovation and chants of "run Liz run" as she took to the podium Friday at a major gathering of progressive leaders and activists.

While the freshman senator from Massachusetts has repeatedly said she isn't running for the White House in 2016, a group titled "ReadyforWarren" was out in force at the annual Netroots Nation conference, held this year in Detroit. As Warren was introduced at the event, supporters from the group unveiled a large "Run Liz Run" banner.

Netroots Nation's to-do list: Get Democrats to polls in November

Warren, smiling, quickly quieted the 2016 cheers, saying, "Sit down, sit down, sit down, come on, sit down."

The senator, a political rock star to many on the left, then proceeded to give a campaign-like address.

In her rousing but brief 17-minute speech, Warren used populist language to paint a picture of America as a land of inequality where "the game is rigged." And she asked the audience to join her in pushing back, saying "I'm fighting back. I'm ready to fight back. Are you ready to fight back?"

Early in her address, Warren pointed to her 2012 election victory over incumbent GOP Sen. Scott Brown, and to her key role during her time in President Barack Obama's administration in creating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, saying those victories happened in part because of support from progressive activists.

She then spoke out on a number of issues pressing to the liberal base of the Democratic Party, issues that party leaders hope will increase Democratic turnout in November's midterm elections.

Warren called for an increase in the minimum wage, adding that "we believe that no one should work full time and still live in poverty."

And she pushed for income equality, saying to applause that "I can't believe I have to say this in 2014: We believe in equal pay for equal work, and we're willing to fight for it!"

Reacting to the Supreme Court's recent ruling throwing out the Obamacare contraceptive coverage mandate for certain businesses, she said "that women have a right to their bodies, we will overturn Hobby Lobby, and we will fight for it!"

As Warren departed the stage, actor and liberal activist Mark Ruffalo took to the podium.

"Wow, Elizabeth Warren," he said. "I mean, wow."

Warren, Biden and Clinton

On the scene while Warren spoke were trackers from the pro-GOP opposition research shop America Rising. The group, which has been targeting Hillary Clinton, has now put Warren on its radar.

Warren's speech came one day after Vice President Joe Biden touted his "progressive" credentials as he addressed the audience.

"I don't take a backseat to anyone when it comes to fighting some of the toughest progressive battles the country has seen," said the vice president, who is mulling another bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Biden touted his role in helping spur President Barack Obama to publicly endorse same sex marriage, saying he made "no apologies whatsoever" his May 2012 "Meet the Press" interview, which the White House has said pushed the process forward.

He also called climate change "the single greatest challenge to humanity today," and agreed with immigration protesters that the government should stop deporting some undocumented immigrants.

What would cause Hillary Clinton not to run in 2016

Clinton, who is in the middle of a book tour for her new memoir "Hard Choices," isn't attending Netroots Nation. She was invited but conference organizers told CNN that her team "declined is because she's not out on the political scene."

The former secretary of state's seriously considering another bid for the White House, and if she runs, as many expect she will, Clinton would instantly become the overwhelming front runner for the Democratic nomination.

While Clinton isn't in Detroit, an outside group that's urging her to run in 2016 will be there in force. Several members of Ready for Hillary are at the conference, holding a session on how grassroots activists have changed the political landscape, and hosting a party Friday night for Netroots Nation attendees.

Is this woman insane? You do not overturn a Supreme Court ruling."

As hateful and full of vitriol as you are donna, I always thought of you as one of the smarter righties on here (which really doesn't say much at all), but this post indicates you don't even have a fundamental understanding of American History or law, to say the least. I suggest you you do a little research (outside the drudge news report... real research, or just a short google search) into how how our country has grown and turned away from things like slavery and intolerance (despite your party's efforts to drag us back into the cavemen days... or better yet-- in ya'll's fantasies, medevial times).
I'm not going to give you the answer or tell you where you can find instances of where SCOTUS rulings have been overturned because frankly I'm getting a little sick and tired of trying to educate you rubes. You are thankless and I don't get paid and you don't even learn anything... you ignore the facts and go right back to spewing whatever ignorant thought comes into your peabrains w/o even considering whether it has any basis in reality or not.
I'm sure you will go of on one of your usual rants now (like you did against salty dog when they were aghast at your blatant stupidity)without bothering to do a short search which will reveal Ms. Warren is correct and you (as usual) are just flat wrong.
But your rwnj buddies on here will believe you over this Harvard Professor because they are as just as prone as you to believe off the cuff, uneducated, and ignorant remarks from some trailer park denizen over a well respected, highly educated, and fine lady such as Ms. Warren.... this is why your party respects rednecks like palin and gomert.
    Have a nice day.

Donna – " Exactly what 100 year precedent was overturned? "

The Tillman Act of 1907, passed at the request of Pres. Theodore Roosevelt (Republican), said that corporations could not make a monetary contribution in connection with any election to any political office.

Great, let's just highlight a person with 1 years experience in the Senate and encourage them to run for President. We're all witnesses to how well a "rookie" Senator does in office as we speak. I guess it just doesn't matter anymore for one to earn their stripes, just as long as they can endorse and push through either party's radical agenda.

"If you don't learn from history, you are doomed to repeat it."

We don't need another freshman senator. The learning curve is too steep, and they don't have enough seasoning for us to determine how they will act in difficult situations. Come back, Elizabeth, after you've completed a couple terms in the Senate.

What a terrible pick. I live in Massachusetts. Elizabeth Warren personifies hypocrisy. She garnered herself special treatment to get hired at Harvard College by claiming she was of Native American decent, then later denied it. Now she says she may be like 1/30th cause um, someone in her family told her she might be. She was paid $350,000 to teach one single class at Harvard, now she is saying that the cost of education is too high and wants to relieve poor students of massive loan debt. In one of her first interviews, she deferred a question on NATIONAL security to our governor. Once the rest of the nation learns about Lizzy, hopefully, they'll be running in the other direction.

Warren is the only one with the gumption to tell it like it is for ordinary American workers. The game IS rigged. Prices of everything goes up but wages don't and there's no way to get ahead. Work your fingers to the bone and what do you get? Boney fingers. Truer now than ever before.

Progressive = Government does everything and is never wrong. We have already have one in the White House and you see where that has taken us. It has done one thing for me and many others. I labor over saving every dollar in taxes and where my charitable dollars are spent.

Obama basically stole his "you didn't build that" speech from Elizabeth Warren. She gave a very, very similar speech in August of 2011 at a campaign even in Andover, Mass. Obama gave his July of 2012 almost a year later.

She said "Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along."

This is not what we want more of. Plus, she, like most Liberals are hypocrites; she is wealthy, earning $350,000 for one class at Harvard and crying how poor kids are in such dire straights with student debt. She claimed with was part Native American to get hired at Harvard; now she says she may be like 1/30th or so some random relative says. Typical lying, limo liberal.

For me (despite the lame rush on the right to "define" her) Elizabeth Warren is a more genuine voice of the American people than the other contenders both from the right and the left. If she were drafted by the grass roots of the Democratic Party and was able to overcome the Hillary machine, I think she could energize not only the left, but the great middle as well. As to her message on the minimum wage, not only should full time pay keep people out of poverty, it should also keep them off government assistance programs, and prevent corporations from shifting employment costs to taxpayers to pad C-Suite compensation. I'd prefer to support fellow Americans through the prices I pay for products and services, rather than through income taxes.

Brenda Morrisey, you're absolutely right on. It is down right scary that anyone would think she's worthy of the office of President! But there are so many right now that think they can 'vote' themselves privileges and not earn them- their mere existence is worthy of a decent salary and benefits, which is why we're failing as a nation and raising children that can't even tie their shoes. Tell them they're special no matter what they do...or whether they try or not. How about 'raising the minimum wage' by doing something to earn it! There are those that complain they can't raise their family on their 'McDonald's salary'- that's not what that job is for! Poverty today is more a result of broken families and spoiled brats than a failure to raise the minimum wage!
