Company men: The U.S. Chamber flexes its new political muscle

Washington (CNN) – The plot to save Thad Cochran was hatched at Off The Record, the subterranean bar inside the Hay-Adams hotel in downtown Washington.

In mid-June, just days before the Mississippi Senate runoff election, Tom Donohue, the hard-nosed CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, was commiserating over drinks with Scott Reed, his senior political strategist, and Chip Pickering, a former Mississippi congressman-turned-telecom lobbyist.

It's time for the Chamber to step up & support MIDDLE CLASS AMERICA. No Middle Class, No America. The Goose that laid Golden Eggs is being starved to death by Corporate America. The Chamber better recognize that before it's too late.

"@Sniffit, your race card is worn out. Colin Powell and Con Rice tokens, eh?"

Perhaps this is hard for you to understand because you left your tinfoil hat on when I explicitly advised that it be removed before continuing reading: No, they are not tokens. They are both pretty accomplished and capable people who were legit choices for those positions, even if they turned out to be willing to lie about WMDs in Iraq to get us into an unfunded war that the GOP hoped would help them establish their goal of a "permanent majority."

However, when you consistently respond to legitimate, substantiated criticisms of racism, misogyny and bigotry with "nuh uh, here are my tokens that prove otherwise" you reduce even the qualified people to token status. "I have a black friend" does not disprove racism when you act and speak like a racist or support those that do....and THAT is what the GOP/Teatrolls are doing in terms of their policies and behavior and statements across the country. And now you'll say "that's an unfair generalization" so I'll have to point out that anyone supporting the people doing it is an ENABLER even if they do not harbor any personal animosities and prejudices. You got in their clown car and are along for the ride. That all being said, there are absolutely examples of abject tokenism as well.
