(CNN) — First lady Michelle Obama jumped into the White House fundraising spree on Thursday, prodding supporters in Chicago to hand over the maximum campaign contribution in an attempt to shore up Democrats' chances in upcoming midterm elections.
Her entreaty came as her husband, President Barack Obama, capped a three-day fundraising swing on the West Coast, bringing in millions of dollars for the committees charged with electing Democrats to office.
"We need you to write the biggest, fattest check that you can possibly write," Mrs. Obama told a crowd of donors in Chicago, her hometown. "Writing those checks is the single-most impactful thing that you can do right now."
(CNN) – In yet another sign that Congress will leave town next week without addressing the influx of young migrants at the southern border, a senior White House official acknowledged there are major doubts that lawmakers will approve President Barack Obama's request for emergency funding to deal with the crisis.
"Alarming if Congress leaves for the August recess without acting," the official told reporters ahead of the visit of three Central American presidents to the White House on Friday.
Los Angeles (CNN) – Ramping up his populist economic message as midterm elections near, President Barack Obama on Thursday singled out large companies that maneuver through legal loopholes to avoid paying U.S. taxes as “corporate deserters.”
Those firms have effectively renounced any allegiance to their home country, Obama claimed during remarks at a community college here.

Washington (CNN) — Rob Astorino, New York’s GOP candidate for governor, was urged not to attend a Republican Governors Association meeting in Aspen this week after publicly clashing with the group’s chairman, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, over support for his underdog campaign, which Christie called “a lost cause.”
Astorino rebuffed the request — which was made by an unidentified RGA staffer who said the group wanted to “avoid conflict” at the meeting — and went ahead with an overnight trip to the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen to meet with donors and other governors, GOP sources familiar with incident told CNN.
