Senior Obama adviser on impeachment: 'I would not discount that possibility'

Washington (CNN) – Dan Pfeiffer, a longtime aide and senior adviser to President Barack Obama, told reporters Friday that recent talk of impeaching the President should not be considered a long shot.

"I would not discount that possibility," Pfeiffer said, pointing out that a CNN/ORC International poll released Friday indicated that a third of Americans think Obama should be impeached.

Pfeiffer, who spoke to reporters at The Monitor Breakfast, pointed at recent attempts by House Republicans to sue the President as evidence that they would consider impeachment in the future.

"Speaker Boehner, by going down the path of this lawsuit, has opened the door to Republicans possibly considering impeachment at some point in the future," Pfeiffer said. "I think that if the President enacted immigration reform that would certainly up the likelihood that they would contemplate impeachment."

Although one-third of Americans endorsed impeaching Obama, according to the CNN poll, a sizable 65% said they wouldn't take that step. There were also, expectedly, partisan divisions on the question with 57% of Republicans but only 35% of independents and 13% of Democrats backing a move to impeach Obama.

Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, earlier this month called for Obama to be impeached over the growing number of undocumented children from Central American coming across the southern border.

In an opinion editorial for the conservative website Brietbart, Palin wrote that "(Obama's) unsecured border crisis is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, 'no mas.'"

"It's time to impeach; and on behalf of American workers and legal immigrants of all backgrounds, we should vehemently oppose any politician on the left or right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment," she continued.

Talk of Obama's impeachment has long been a hallmark of the far right, but has experienced a recent uptick of late.

After President Bill Clinton in 1998 became only the second president to be impeached, his public approval hit 73%, the highest rating of his administration, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.

Pfeiffer, however, rejected the idea that impeachment would be a good thing for Obama and his lagging poll numbers.

"We take it very seriously and I don't think it would be a good thing," he said. "But I think it would be foolish to discount the possibility that Republicans would at least consider going down that path."

"This has not been thoroughly disproven so why are you lying about it? Until the IRS produces all of Lois Lerner's emails so that investigators can determine who she was communicating with on all this, the jury is still out. We already know she was colluding with the Justice Dept. and well as the FEC illegally. So who knows where else her illegality may have taken her? One thing is for sure though, it wasn't one rouge employee in Cinci as the Obama administration first stated."

Yawn. No really...YAWN. And when/if they get the emails and it shows she wasn't talking directly with Obama and his staff about going after Teatroll groups for political reasons, Issa's tapdancing clown show will move on to sending out subpoenas for her personal emails arguing that her government emails proved she was smart enough not to use them for Obama's nefarious schemes so she must have used her personal emails. It's a constant game of moving the goal posts and everyone knows it. You guys seem to think all that's needed to prove a cover-up is the accusation of wrongdoing and a lack of evidence to prove it. There are no elephants in that strawberry patch.

Those who want to sue or impeach President Obama fall into several categories:
    1. They are not true Patriotic Americans.
    2. They are racists, bigots, and/or prejudiced.
    3. They are jealous of President Obama's accomplishments.
    4. Republicans want to divert the American people's attention away from their failures and do-nothing actions to President Obama.
    5. They are Nazi and Fascists.
    6. They are uneducated Mid-westerners and Southerners.
    7. They don't understand what's happening in Washington and around the world.
    8. They are conservatives who believe that if you don't wear penny loafers, white socks, black pants and a white shirt, that you are a terrorist.

I could go on and on with a few hundred more reasons, but I think we all see the real picture.

The F-35 fighter jet approved by congress has so far cost 400 billion dollars and some at Lockheed say that they expect 2 trillion income for Lockheed in sales and development when the final tally is taken. My point is isn't legislation that needs to be approved and problems that need to be addressed the function of Congress. Leave ousting to the voters in November and get your butt to work.

@Rudy-The 2nd Amend. has nothing to do with violence( which I stated earlier). So how is 2nd amend soultions a threat of violence. As far as you saying Im on the extreme on political issues, go ahead. Doesn`t change the fact that Im an Independent and agree with dems on some issues and gop on others. Sounds like you don`t like the fact that I can be critical of dems and at the same time not be attacked for what the gop does.

It doesn't look good when most citizens believe most of the conspiracy theories of the radical right.
What does the rest of the world think how smart we are when we take science out of school and put a particular sect's religion and more guns in kids' hands.

In this piece, it refers to Pfeiffer having said. "I think that if the President enacted immigration reform that would certainly up the likelihood that they would contemplate impeachment." I would recommend that the columnist pay attention to the fact that the President CANNOT enact immigration reform. Congress are the "enacters", but sdaly, they'd apparently rather be the "UNacters" and do NOTHING!

Scott – Your post on health care premiums rising is right out of the pages of Hannity's Insanity. I am in a state that gave insurance companies a blank check to raise their rates as much as they wanted. Mine went up $3 a month. Red states governors have really screwed over their citizens.

Why would you not add the following to your article?? "A spokesman for the House speaker called the impeachment comments 'political games." It's unfair to only give one point of view that always puts Republicans in the worst possible light. Not honest journalism.

I'm an Obama supporter. And I hope-to-god the [R]s attempt to impeach Obama.

Its not only that the [R]s do not have a leg to stand on, but I like the idea of seeing Obama pulling their political legs off and hitting them over their empty heads with their own bloody appendages. Compare Obama's achievements VS those of this Congress. No match, and that WILL be the highlite on the news every night.

And its not only that Obama will hit them over their heads with their own legs, but its that he will hit them so hard and mercilessly that the [R]s will have to crap into bags stitched to the sides of their torsos, just like [R] reps. Gingrich and Livingston leaned to do in a previous era when [R]s decided to pull similar shenanigans.

I look forward to it. I'm still laughing my butt off that Gingrich left office in disgrace long before Clinton sailed peacefully into his sunset.

You clowns don't actually believe that disagreeing with Obama and the ludicrous liberal agenda makes one a racist or a bigot, do you? Regardless of race, this president is terrible. Forcing communism down everyone's throat and fundraising for Democrats while ignoring the real problems of the country, The Mexican invasion of USA comes to mind, make this a terrible president. The only thing racist about obama, was that Nobel Peace prize he won, for being black!

Tampa Tim – " Red states governors have really screwed over their citizens. "

My rates went DOWN a little but now I can actually use the insurance, due to wider coverage and lower out of pocket costs. Insurance companies were killing me before. Humongous rate increases each year, with an outrageous deductible

My 'red-state' governor is doing his best to screw us, but appears to me to be failing. Unless you need Medicare in GA..
