Ben Carson's big 2016 move

(CNN) - Ben Carson is taking a significant step toward a 2016 presidential run by forming a political action committee, CNN confirmed Friday.

The renowned neurosurgeon and a popular figure among conservatives told the Washington Times he chose Houston businessman Terry Giles to be his campaign chairman, if he decides to launch a White House bid.

The PAC will be called One Nation - also the title of Carson's book released earlier this year.

"Now is the time to start all of the appropriate exploration and investigation, and put down the structure that is necessary," Carson said Friday morning after meetings with supporters in Florida. "I would say we are definitely a step or two closer than we were a year ago."

Carson – who writes a column for the conservative Washington Times – told the newspaper that what happens to the congressional balance of power after the November elections will weigh on his 2016 decision, adding that his new PAC will help support like-minded candidates running this year.

Key races to watch in 2014

"One Nation PAC will help elect candidates in 2014 who share Dr. Carson's belief in a prosperous, united America, and give him the ability to more directly impact the political process moving forward," One Nation board member Mike Murray told CNN.

Carson, who rose to national conservative fame last year when he criticized Democratic policies on taxes and health care while giving the keynote address in front of President Barack Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast, has a strong grassroots following.

Highly critical of the President, Carson has been a stalwart opponent of the Affordable Care Act, once equating the health care law to "slavery," and recently slammed the White House's foreign policy in the wake of escalating crises throughout the Middle East and in Ukraine.

Earlier this month, a super PAC supporting Carson pulled in an impressive $3.3 million fundraising haul in the second quarter of this year, bringing the group's total to more than $7 million in its efforts to draft Carson into the 2016 fray.

Giles, like Carson, is a recipient of the Horatio Algers award for perseverance over adversity. Giles is currently the head of the investment firm Giles Enterprises.

CNN’s Sean Kennedy contributed to this report.

Yawn. Snowball's chance in hades. I'd be psyched for the comedy it will provide...if it wasn't for how horrifying his views are.

Oh please. He's as qualified as Donald Trump to be President. The Presidency is not an entry level position.

Dude you don't have a snowballs chance in hell at getting the GOP nomination. 2016 will be the end of President Obama's term. You will have outlived your usefulness and then you'll see the real GOP. I know you're a well renowned and respected surgeon so instead of having you sweep the floor maybe they'll make you their veterinarian.

Dream on Ben. You should have jumped in for 2012, not that you would have even been nominated then either. Apparently they don't talk openly around you if you're having these fantasies. There are those in your party that would rather burn this country to the ground than to see someone like you in the WH, whether or not you have an 'R' behind your name. But good luck with that.

I see another republiCan't boob is ready to get into the clown car. Ben Carson and Herb Cane both think that American black should look up to them, not because of what they both have accomplished but because they are black.

These two gentleman( a term I use very loosely) want to be the black bearer for the GoTP which won't happen. Its fools like these two and JC Watts that get these republiCan't to think they have a chance with the black community.

Why don't reThugliCan't realize its not the faces they put forth, it is their policies that everyone HATES. Nice try but they only token if for the bus.

How long before he blows it all up by saying something like "democrat plantation"? No no....trust me, Ben...that's a great idea...you just keep saying that kind of thing and you'll suck all the minority votes right out of the Democrats' camp...I promise....

Another real smart person who has no common sense. I'd like Doc Carson and others like him, regardless of race or gender, to try to live on what my husband and I have lived on for nearly four decades. We are nearly debt free, have not had a mortgage for more than 15 years and have saved for our retirement. But, we can't afford fancy vacations or new vehicles (mine has 250,000 miles on it and a couple of weeks ago we drove it 500 miles in one day, which was a bit nerve wracking but normal for our socio-economic class.) Just because you are smart and made pots of money does not make you a good leader, and apparently you lose your empathy for common people.

  16. definitely

As a conservative I will listen to what he has to say but unlike the democrats and some Republicans I do not want him as President just because republicans think we must have a black person in office to show we are diverse. That is as stupid as when Obama was elected and who has proven himself incapable of leading this country in all matters here and abroad.

I actually kinda' like the idea of this... ben hires giles to run his 'campaign'. giles defended ken lay (from enron). ken lay went under the prison. Perhaps giles will do an excellent job with ben and he will be trotted off to prison at some point (my actual guess would be a mental hospital, but as long as he is gone, I do not care).
If lies were crimes.... johnny cochran couldn't rise from the grave and keep old ben out of prison. He thinks by lowering his voice and talking to you in soothing tones like you are a stupid 5 yive year old, it somehow makes his BS believable.... ol' chris the alabammy crackhead might drink that kool aid, but not me....

He is as qualified as Obama was. He would certainly cause less harm to the country than Obama has. If he keeps to his views, he could actually improve things.

Hmm. I guess the neurosurgeon business wasn't paying enough, which seems a little odd.
Anyways, I suppose that he performed a self head examination and became a conservative.
