Judge orders new congressional map in Florida

(CNN) - A circuit court judge on Friday ordered Florida's state legislature to redraw congressional district lines before the state's primary in two weeks, suggesting he would be prepared to delay the November 4 general elections in the newly drawn districts.

Judge Terry Lewis had earlier ruled the map, which consists of 27 congressional districts, to be unconstitutional.

In particular he found two districts crafted by the GOP-led legislature to be unduly affected by political considerations. The two districts are represented by Democrat Corrine Brown and Republican Daniel Webster.

Critics of the current lines, drawn after the 2010 U.S. Census, say the districts unfairly favor Republicans.

Lewis said he's considering the option of postponing the November 4 elections because of the changes.

"It is necessary to get a revised map in place and for me to consider additional evidence as to the legal and logistical obstacles to holding delayed elections for affected districts in 2014," Lewis wrote in his opinion. "Time is of the essence."

It's unclear how the newly drawn map will affect the timing of congressional elections in the affected area as well as in other parts of the state.

The judge ordered the secretary of state and supervisors of elections to present contingency plans in case the state needs to hold special elections.

Must be one of those activist judges. We all know those are the only ones who rule against Republicans.

    I am shocked. No, really.

Jebus, FL has probably broken every election law that exists, they just haven't been pursued competently(Wonder why?).

This is a good decision. There is absolutely no good reason why the political party in charge should have the power to redraw districts. It should be done by an unbiased, nonpartisan group that lets the data do the talking and adjust (or not adjust) accordingly.

Gerrymandering and increasing difficulty in voting are the most common GOP dirty tricks.
That and blaming the Dems, the government, the "wrong type" of voters when things don't go their way.

Silence, when MO was run by the Democrats, they gerrymandered as bad as the GOP did a couple of years ago. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, regardless of who you are.

That's an understatement to say the least. A look at Florida 14 shows just how effed up it really is! They created an enclave out of downtown St. Petersburg – and included the body of water known as Tampa Bay as part of that district, BUT kept the Skyway bridge in district 13. There are no contiguous borders with the rest of the district, and in order to get to the rest of the district from the south, you have to drive through congressional districts 13 & 16. To access it from the north, you have to drive through district 13.

(tongue planted firmly in cheek) Right on Ian! Judge Terry Lewis is the same judge who stuck it to Florida rethugs in 2008 by declaring that President Obama is a natural-born American citizen and therefore eligible to be on the ballot! He's got it in for those poor little rethugs!

And accessing it from both the north and south requires crossing Tampa Bay.

Ironically, before the districts were redrawn to gouge an entire demographic out of what is now district 13, the red used to win by huuuuge margins. After "those people" were gerrymandered into an enclave, the red candidate who is also a professional lobbyist BARELY won in an off-off-year special election.

@ian's, not, it means that teaklans can't gerrymander districts to win elections. They tried to buy electionsbd couldn't. Look, if you care to learn anything, at some of the redistricting that used to be either democratic or both. One single block that has two or three rethug homes include those homes as part of the teaklan ilk while the rest is left out. It's the worst jigsaw puzzle in the country.
