First on CNN: Romney and Christie teaming up for GOP fundraiser

Washington (CNN) — Mitt Romney is Jersey bound.

The former Republican presidential nominee will team up with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for a fundraiser benefiting the New Jersey Republican Party next month, sources familiar with the plans told CNN.

The event is billed as a birthday celebration for Christie, who turns 52 next month.

The September 10 fundraiser — co-hosted by Christie allies Bill Palatucci, New Jersey GOP Chairman Sam Raia, state Sen. Tom Kean and Assemblyman Jon Bramnick — will take place in East Brunswick.

Romney is listed as a "special guest."

It’s the latest high-profile political move for Romney, who is asserting himself on the 2014 campaign trail as a surrogate in key Senate and House races, and burnishing his reputation among Republicans in the process.

Romney’s appearance alongside the New Jersey governor, who is laying groundwork for a 2016 presidential bid, could also signal to Romney’s network of financial supporters that Christie remains a viable choice for the Republican nomination in the wake of the Bridgegate scandal that engulfed his administration earlier this year and continues to bubble beneath the surface. It's not the first time the two men have shared a stage together this year - Christie was invited to address a Romney-hosted donor retreat in Park City in June.

While the Republican donor class hasn't fled from Christie en masse, the scandal tarnished his his early frontrunner status and wounded Christie's golden boy status among establishment money-men.

The birthday fundraiser might also heal some bad blood left over from 2012. Christie and Romney — and their respective loyalists — had a sometimes fraught relationship at times during the presidential race. Christie publicly mulled running against Romney for the GOP nomination, and later infuriated some Republicans just days before the election by teaming up with President Obama for a tour of New Jersey storm damage after Hurricane Sandy, giving the president some important bipartisan luster in full view of the national media.

"We're incredibly thrilled Gov. Romney will be the special guest at Gov. Christie's birthday party this year," Raia and Palatucci said in a statement provided to CNN.

"Governor Romney has long been a supporter of New Jersey Republicans and we are very much looking forward to the honor of having him back to support the state Party and to celebrate this special occasion with all of our guests.”

I still don't understand this. How could that be seen as "teaming up"? President Obama is and was President of the entire US. He wanted to see the damage to NJ and Christy was simply doing his job, nothing more nothing less. I'm no Christy fan by far, but IMO anyone that criticized him for meeting with the POTUS and showing him respect was INSANE.

Al Queda ain't got nothing on the GOPT from 2009- til now. Nothing. I'd trust an insurgent before I trust one of them.

Oh, and Hillary is no longer "Madame Secretary" or "Senator", so should we call her "Two Time Loser" as well since she lost the presidential nomination plus she's married to that stud muffin Bill........

Romney/Christie 2016.... Since the country now knows it was duped into re-electing Obama because all of his lies, Romney would win and with Christie as the #2, that would be great. The country is in dire need of real leaders, real proven successful leaders, like Romney and Christie. We don't need an empty pants suit to replace the emply suit we have now!

Probably never by your count. Define "talk and act like it." Guess what House Republicans talk and act like?

House Republicans voted to sue him for using executive orders. Republicans voted to limit his use of executive orders on the border crisis. Finally, Republicans threw their hands up in the air and said the president "must lead" on the border crisis though executive orders.

Guess what House Republicans talk and act like? Neighbors. That's what folks in mental hospitals call one another.

@chris, e/tone et al., show up for work? Lies? The NJ governor left town and is hardly pending any time working in his state. Did somebody shut down a bridge on him?
As far as the twit? Work? Didn't he tell real unemployed people while running another failing campaign that he was unemployed? I think he has way too much time on his hands and the three time loser who was not picked by McCain as his running mate (that tells you everything about his political pedigree) had the money to travel all over the US still doing nothing.
To the poster who said that the twit will run in 2016 with the little missy from NH. LOL. She's useless. She another puppet the teaklans bring when they need a woman. It she's still not the right woman.

Lets face facts Tommy, your gop is trying desperately to limit the votes from minorities, you scared of letting the people vote? The more you try yo deny them, the more determined they will be, Florida was your example. I don't agree with all the dems want, but I simply can't vote for a party that promised to kill my social security, and Medicaid, paid into them for decades, now I'm supposed to take a hit so the 1% who took 95% of all wealth can get more, and I'm supposed to be dumb enough to believe that it will somehow make my life better, really?

oh please rudy... here are just a few of the many times obama has lied to us. all he has done since getting elected is to pit one segment, demographic, race and against another. it is what the entire democrat party does as well with their imaginary wars. talk about false conspiracy mongers, democrats own the title hands down.

“There is not a liberal America and a conservative America. There is a United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America, a Latino America, an Asian America, There is a United States of America.” – Obama’s 2004 DNC speech

“I don’t want to pit Red America against Blue America. I want to be the president of the United States of America.” - Obama at the 2007 Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Iowa

“You [voters] said the time has come to move beyond the bitterness and ager and pettiness that's consumed Washington; to end the political strategy that's been all about division. And instead make it about addition; to build a coalition for change that stretches through red states and blue states.” – Obama victory speech after the Iowa caucuses

“I believe we can seize this future together because we are not as divided as our politics suggests. We're not as cynical as the pundits believe. We are greater than the sum of our individual ambitions, and we remain more than a collection of red states and blue states. We are and forever will be the United States of America.” – Obama’s 2012 victory speech

Romney and Christie – sounds good to me. I am still in shock that Obama won. But with all the dead people voting and the ones who voted several times, I guess it could happen. Use your head folks, Romney is the only potential presidential candiate who can save this country. He predicted most of what has happened. He gains nothing material from becoming President, unlike everyone else. He is the ONLY winner!!!!

Oh! ya, Romney will win because the 47% are now in 1% Group. Right? And Christie will win if and when he can swim from under the bridge.

No one is limiting the minority vote. We need voter ID to make certain only live citizens vote. That is our right. Social Security and Medicare will not be killed. The 1% earned their money and took nothing from anyone to get where they are today. Did you ever hear of working at MacDonalds? You can start there and move up and get better jjobs and go to school and became anything you want in America. No one but you can and should make your life better.
